Marown Ladies O60s reach maximum points
On Tuesday 18th Ladies O60’s games saw sunshine with Marown hosting Douglas A 126-79 (6-0) Lyn Ruscoe and Sue McCourt for Villa both reaching 19 in their games. Celia Joughin and Lynda Cadamy at Marown both winning to single figures.
Castletown B v Port Erin B 120-85 (5-1) with Wyn Collister Port Erin just losing out to Pauline Moore 21-20. Gwen Tuck was the only Port Erin side to take a 21-15 win.
Finch Hill travelled up to Ballaugh where this game ended a close 94-78 (4-2) to Ballaugh. Lil Smith and Sue Caley were Finch Hill’s winners 21-6 and 21-4. Ballaugh’s winners Julie Reilly 21-11, Rose Waterworth 21-6, Alison Millard 21-18 and Brenda Bowyer 21-1.
Peel Sunset’s visitors were Mooragh A 119-77 (5-1) Janet Monk 21-14 taking the only win for the Ramsey side. Mooragh Park B team played home to Nobles where they had to give Noble’s a game. 51-114 (2-4) Gill Malpass 21-16 and Mary Bruce 21-14 were the Mooragh winners. Nobles won all their games to single fingers. Onchan A v South Ramsey 97-99 (3-3) This was the closest game of the day won by just 2 points. Wendy McDowell just losing out 20-21 to South Ramsey’s Sue Collier.
On Wednesday 19th Port St Mary A hosted Castletown A 80-96 (2-4) Margaret Tasker at Port St Mary A had a 21-0 win and Hilary Kermode Castletown A won 21-2.
Thursday 20th was also blessed with sunshine and saw Port Erin B host Marown 70-120 (1-5) Where Sue Rickets at Port Erin stopped Marown from scoring another maximum of the week by winning her game 21-15. Nobles v Peel Sunset 109-96 (3-3) Paula Firth at Noble’s just lost 20-21 and Carloine Corlett 18-21. South Ramsey hosted Port Erin A 108-72 (5-1) Caroline Whitehead at Port Erin A was the lone winner for the southern side winning 21-3. Douglas v Ballagh 96-108 (3-3) Where Julie Reilly for the visitors just lost her game 21-20. Mooragh Park A played visiting team Onchan A 108-62 (4-2) where all but Lynn Mayers 18-21 Anne Bannan game were won to single figures. Finch Hill scored maximum points against Mooragh Park B 126-42 (6-0) with Lil Smith winning 21-1.
The final game of the week saw Port St Mary A v Castletown B 113-50 (5-1) Susan Kerruish 21-8 put a stop to Port St Mary A claiming all the games and giving Castletown B their only win of the day.
Maximum points for South Ramsey O60 Ladies
South Ramsey didn’t have far to travel to Mooragh Park where they scored maximum points 41-
126 (0-6). Sue Collier, Judy Kelly, Elaine Moore and Jill Quayle all won to single figures. Mary Bruce was the highest scorer for Mooragh Park.
There were two close games this week Castletown B v Finch Hill 96-94. Unfortunately Finch Hill
had to give a game away (3-3), and Port Erin B v Douglas A 97-82 (3-3). Castletown winners were
Linda Dobinson 21-11, Elaine McElroy 21-10 and Sue Kerruish 21-10. Finch Hill winners were Mary
O’Connor 21-8, Elaine Vincent 21-15 and Iris Kermode 21-10. Port Erin winners were Joan Rider 21-
11, Sue Rickets 21-8 and Sue Wilshaw had the Walkover. Douglas Winners Kay McKierman
21-10, Lin Ruscoe 21-9 and Gillian Christian 21-15.
Marown hosted Nobles 119-96 (4-2) Sylvia Kennaugh held off Rosie Winkle 21-20 in a very
close game. Dee Lewis also won her game for Nobles.
Castletown A traveled to Onchan. Onchan 55-121 Castletown A(1-5) where they were held off
scoring maximum points by Wendy McDowell for Onchan winning 21-16.
Ballaugh v Mooragh A 117-88 (4-2). Ballaugh’s Brenda Bower won her game to single figures.
Port St Mary A hosted Port Erin A 50-100 (1-5) where Margaret Tasker was the lone winner for
Port St Mary winning her game 21-4.
In the second games of the week for the O60s Ladies, Finch Hill 68 – 98 hosted Marown where
Marown took the win. With Finch Hill winning just two of the games and all the games were won to
single figures for both teams. Douglas A v Castletown B 110-115 (2-4). Castletown B won by just 5 points with some very close games, both teams taking a 21-20 win and Castletown having a 21-19 and 21-17 wins. South Ramsey v Peel 120-57 (4-2). South Ramsey’s Moira Anderson had a 21-4 win to help
keep peels points down. The winners for Peel were Terry Berry 21-7 and Val Allwood 21-11.
Castletown A v Port Erin A 120-57 (5-1). Port Erin’s Jean Thackrah took the only win for Port
Erin 21-15, whilst Castletown’s Kath Kinley, Sue Peach, Kim Foy and Barbara Young all won
their games to single figures. Nobles v Ballaugh 122-99 (4-2). This was a great game for Nobles as they only dropped 4 points in total. With Libby Andrade and Marilyn Ellison both scoring 19 against Ballaugh’s winners Rosie Waterworth and Michelle Cubbon. Port Erin B v Port st Mary A 67-124 (1-5). Port St Mary only dropped 2 points in this game with winners Mavis Franks, Brenda Hawkard and Margaret Tasker all winning to single figures, Steph Swift just managed to get a win 21-19 beating Edwina Reid.
Maximum Points For Castletown A in Ladies open age crown green bowls league
Friday evening 14th April saw Castletown A host Marown B with an impressive 189 – 109 (9-0) win.
Celia Joughin and Elaine Dewhurst came close to ending Castletown A’s full house by reaching
19 and 18. Hannah Drewett, Ali Kearsley, Sue Peach and Kath Kinley all won to single figures.
Martha Butler for Marown B wasn’t fazed playing Hannah Drewett and scored an impressive 14.
Douglas traveled down to Port Erin for a close result with Port Erin winning 144-140 (6-3). The
Douglas youngsters are all coming on well and pushed Port Erin all the way to secure their win.
Marown A hosted South Ramsey where the Ramsey side won 5 – 4 on games, but Marown A
took the match points winning 160- 145. Helen Withers and Lynda Cadamy both reaching 18
and Sue Collier for Ramsey put a stop to Jayne Smith’s winning streak with a 21-17 win.
The new Nobles Team played home to Castletown B winning 169-127 (6-3) Keri Hampton
played her 1st league game and scored an impressive 13-21 against youngster Aalish Moore.
Port St Mary traveled to Peel where they won 140-155 (4-5). Lynda Wilson for Peel won to single
figures as did for Port St Mary’s Trish Bull and Margaret Tasker. Maggie Jackeman from Peel
scored 16 in her 1st ever match against an experienced Edwina Reid.
Ballaugh hosted Mooragh Park where the latter won 5 of the games, but the home team made
all the points count giving them the win 147-131 (4-5) with Elena Dimsdale just losing her 1st
game 20-21 against Bailey McMullan.
It’s lovely to see lots of newcomers this season scoring fantastic results in their 1st league
games, well done to them all.
The 2023 Ladies Section Leagues have Started
Wednesday 4th April 2023 saw the first of the Open Age League matches being played. Last year’s league winners were off to a flying start taking the highest score of the night with 185 away to Ballaugh, who were all playing well after their warm-up led by captain Michelle Cubbon. Michelle took one of Ballaugh’s wins against Stella Watterson 21-19. The other Ballaugh win went to Maria Dimsdale against Hilary Kermode 21-19. Alison Kearsley had the best win for Castletown against Rose Waterworth, the only game to single figures, 4-21. Match score ended 2-7, 133-185.
The revamped Marown A team paid a visit to Port St Mary. The only win for PSM was by Margaret Tasker who beat Rebekah Kelly 21-8. We saw the return of Lyn Bolton to league bowling who beat Nicola Cain 9-21. Jayne Smith clocked up the best score beating her mother, Chris Holland, 2-21. Match score ended 1-8, 95-176.
Marown B, captained by Lil Smith, hosted Port Erin. Strong performances by Marown B ladies saw four games won to single figures. One of these wins was by junior bowler Grace Cooper 21-7 against Susan Inch. Match score ended 5-4, 159-128.
Another junior bowler named Grace (Gawne) also had a win for the newly formed Nobles team against Ann Gale 5-21, when they went to South Ramsey. Nobles took another two games to make the match 6-3, 161-125 for an on form South Ramsey side.
Douglas hosted Peel and saw the first league match for Jo Masson who’s score of 5-21 against Joyce Kelly did not reflect the way she played. Strong performances also from the two juniors, Erin Quayle 7-21 against Gilly Clark and Katie Jacobs 10-21 against Shirley Corrin. Peel took the match 3-6, 122-161.
Castletown B, who unfortunately were a player short, were able to give junior Olivia Johnson 21 points. The other five juniors in the Mooragh Park team took another 88. The adults in the team did well too winning the other three games. Winners for Castletown B with Rachel Palmer against Victoria Johnson 21-18, Charlotte Peach against Bailey McMullan 21-17, and Judith Moore against Lacey McMullan 21-11. Match score ended 3-6, 105-172.
Thursday 5th April 2023 saw the first of the Over 60’s League matches being played. The newly formed Nobles teams l took the maximum points of 126 against Castletown B whose score of 39 did not reflect the performance. Finch Hill also took the maximum points available against Port Erin B who scored 62. Last year’s league winners Castletown A had a solid performance winning 4-2, 108-91 against Peel Sunset. Despite winning four games Onchan A lost out on points 100-90 against Port Erin A. Ballaugh didn’t have far to travel to South Ramsey where they took two games one being by Michelle Cubbon in her first over 60’s match. The closest match of the day was between Mooragh Park A and Marown, with Mooragh Park A winning 5-1 games but only taking an extra 5 points, 108-103.
After a four-year break Lin Ruscoe returned to play against Margaret Tasker when Port St Mary went to the Villa to play Douglas. The match score ended 1-5, 78-117.
With 15 teams in this league Mooragh B have yet to play.
Jayne Smith – Victorious again and definitely on a roll.
The British Merit Qualifier took place at a cold & windy Onchan green on Sunday afternoon with 9 Ladies participating, thus necessitating 1 prelim which was played between Sandra May (Onchan) & Louise Tebay (Ballaugh). Although the green proved was quite difficult to read, it was level pegging all the way but Louise just edged ahead towards the end to win 21-17.
The quarter finals saw some real tussles and quality bowling with Jayne Smith (Marown) beating Debbie Leece (Marown) 21-13, Kim Hargraves (South Ramsey) beating Janet Monk (Mooragh Park) 21-12 & Sue Gawne (Nobles) beating her Lakers teammate Louise Tebay 21-15. Fiona Kennish (South Ramsey) & Caroline Whitehead (Port Erin) had a superb game with Fiona coming out ahead at 21-18.
The semi finals saw Jayne Smith beat Fiona Kennish 21-8 & Sue Gawne beat Kim Hargraves 21-10.
The final between Jayne & Sue saw Jayne get off to a flying start, leading 10-2 before Sue decided it was time to join in. There were some excellent ends in this thoroughly watchable final but Jayne’s experience in short mat shone through & Sue had given herself just a bit too much to do, the final score being 21-18. Thank you to Onchan for their excellent catering & stewarding & to everyone who stayed to support the finalists. At this point we have not been advised of our allocation for the British Senior Merit competition but congratulations Jayne & good luck competing in Lancashire on 8th July.
Jayne Smith no longer a Non-Winner
The ladies section kick started the 2023 season by holding the Hands Trophy Non-Winners competition at Port Erin. With a good entry of 24 the format decided upon was a straight knockout. The standard of bowls was really high even after the six month break. The diversity in ages was also good to see with the oldest player, Rita Callister, playing the youngest player, Grayse Blencoe, proving this sport is for everyone.
Quarter-finals saw Jayne Smith beat Tina Hampson 21-9, Lynda Wilson beat Libby Andrade 21-11, Jo Corkill beat Tracy Moore 21-10 and Sylvia Kennaugh beat Marilyn Ellison 21-16. In the semi-finals Jayne put an end Lynda’s winning streak 21-18 and Sylvia to Jo’s 21-18.
The final was a game of two halves with Jayne running away with it to be 19-9 in front. Sylvia then regained the jack to come back to only two points behind at 19-17. The last end was a show piece with Sylvia lying on for one Jayne took the jack with the last bowl of the end to secure the elusive two points required to take the title and her first open competition win. The irony of this is she is no longer a Non-Winner. Congratulations Jayne. The presentation was made by the competition secretary and a very proud mum, Chris Holland, who thanked those who stayed until the end, Port Erin for the use of the green and the catering. Great start to the year. Good luck to all.
The first full week of Owl Fixtures got underway
The first Wednesday Round Robin took place on 5 October with 14 members taking to the green, each being draw into 7 sets of doubles. First and second place were within 2 points of each other whereas third was some ten points behind second. First place went to Margie Tasker and Gillian Jopson with 35 points, second to Dougie Allan and Sylvia Kennaugh with 33 points and third being Les Brookes and Sid McKnight on 23.
Saturday, 8 October saw four teams take to the green, two teams being the newly formed Sunset Seven and the Nobles Globetrotters.
Sunset Seven got off to a great start winning four out of the six games, whilst the Globetrotters won two games. The closest scoring was a win for the Sunset Sevens with Lynda Wilson holding Stephen Corkill to 17, whilst Grahem Moore of the Globetrotters kept Jeoff Wilson to 17.
Seven Up came a close second by losing the match by 1 point, it was 109 to All But and 108 to Seven Up. The closest games being a win to Seven Up doubles Andy Kennish and Nick Firth who held Bryan Corner and Richie Davies to 17, whilst Willie Corkill from All But had a close battle with Derek Allen but Willie took victory by 1 point.
The Globetrotters then took on Seven Up, with Seven Up almost having a clean sweep but for the double act of Phil Salmon and Sam Colquitt taking a game. The closest wins for Seven Up were that of Derek Allen and Mark Kelly who beat Michael Johnson and Stephen Corkill to 18 points, respectively.
All But then took on Sunset Seven and took a win in four of the games. There were two close games where Celia Joughin took the win for All but holding Jeoff Wilson to 19, while Harry Kelly for Sunset Seven kept Willie Corkill to 19.

Sunday, 9 October saw again four teams take to the green with one new team being the Odd Bowls.
Parkers took on The Lakers and they took victory in 3 of the six games but victory was to the Lakers on points. The closest games were both winners for the Parkers, Mike Alexander holding Brian Kelly to 20, whilst Jo Smith held James Kelly to 19.
Odd Bowls took on the Castletown Cannons, again the match victory being taken on points which went in favour of the Cannons. The Cannons double act Joy Stephens and Sue Kerruish held David Pease and Les Quayle to 18, whereas Odd Bowls Mark Taylor kept Alan Phair to 20.
The Cannons second game was not as successful as they unfortunately did not win a game given the maximum possible score of 126 to the Parkers. George Peach from the Cannons had a tussle with Mike Thomas but stayed on 20. Mike Alexander from the Parkers also held Alan Phair to 18 points.
The Lakers took victory in four games against Odd Bowls, although the closest scoring game of the match was a win to Odd Bowls. Les Brookes and Stephen Oates teamed together in the dobleas and kept Tracy Moore and Sue Gawne to 19.

Outdoor Winter League 2022-23
The Outdoor Winter League has started with what was fabulous sunny weather for both days with a good turnout of members.
Saturday, 1 October had twenty six members take to the green , which for the first half of the season is on Nobles 2 Green rather than Nobles 3.
There were seven sets of doubles and four sets of triples, the latter using black jacks and the former using yellow.
The doubles winners were Caroline Whitehead and Julian Rothera, who took victory from Brian Colquitt and Cliff Clague who scored 35 points.
The triples victors were Greg Barlow, Joyce Kelly and Harry Kelly who managed to sore 21 in one of the games making them a hard team to beat. They scored a total of 32 points, leaving in second place Alan Phair, James Kelly and Gill Morgan with 26 points.
Sunday, 2 October saw some familiar faces return to the green, with fifteen members showing up for the second round robin. These member played triples using yellow jacks. There was only one point between first and second place but the winners were Michael Johnson, Kevin Firth and Margie Tasker scoring 35 points with second place going to Sid McKnight, Stephen Corkill and Greg Barlow.
League fixtures will begin, weather permitting on Saturday, 8 October.
Marown Win Fourth Club Team Championship Title

Photo: Arnie WithersThe Club Team Championship was brought to a conclusion at Nobles Park on Wednesday evening with the semi-finals being played two days earlier on Monday night. The format for the competition – being played for the fourth time was unchanged with four doubles and six singles with 14 bowlers eligible to play. The four teams reaching the semi-final were Marown, Port St Mary, South Ramsey and Onchan.
The first semi-final was held at Castletown, between Marown and Port St Mary, the same team they faced at this stage in 2020 with the Crosby outfit having a much tougher battle than their last clash which they won by 66 chalks, this time round winning by 16 chalks (195-179) proving too strong for the Port team. In terms of games Marown won 7-3, with the lowest score being 13, and five of the matches going to 17 or more. In the singles Nicola Cain caused the biggest upset for Port as she stunned Marown Captain Paul Kelly 21-19, Trevor Quayle won 21-15 against Clare Cooper, while Bernard Thackrah and Robbie Cooil performed well to beat Dean Kipling and Paul Dunn 21-14.
South Ramsey made the trip to Crosby as they took on Onchan in a fairly straightforward win by 45 chalks (189-144). Onchan did manage to win three of the 10 games with Mike Alexander edging home 21-20 against Stefan Kelly, Sue Gawne & Matthew Quirk won 21-13 against Steven Waters and Peter Collister, while Jamie Clague and Mike Thomas won to single figures (21-9) against Fiona Kennish and Glynn Hargraves.
The final got underway with South Ramsey putting out a stronger team in this competition than they have done since the competition was first played, as they looked to take home a clean sweep of the Associations top team prizes for the season, however Marown were favourites to retain the title that they have won for the previous three years the competition has been played.
Marown didn’t disappoint putting in a good performance in the singles games in the first half of the match with captain Paul Kelly gaining his revenge on Gill Dixon following the Mixed Team final last month as he won 21-14, while Rebecca Teare brushed aside Jenny Moore 21-8 on the same green that Teare recently won the IOM Bowls Festival on. Win number three arrived with Clare Cooper winning 21-16 against Toby Hart as the Crosby team opened up a commanding 25 chalk lead. In the doubles Debbie Leece and Paul Dunn extended the lead by another point as they beat Peter Collister and David Bradford 21-20. South Ramsey then picked up their first win of the night with their own 21-20 victory with Glynn Hargraves and James Teare recovering from a 14-19 deficit to sneak home against Brian Kelly and Philippa Taylor.
In the second half of the match Marown knew they just needed to score well in the games, avoiding any heavy defeats to ensure the title was theirs once again. Juan Killip and Karl Parker picked up Marown’s second 21-20 of the night in their favour as they held off Lee Dawson and Steven Waters, while Tony Dugdale fought back from a 3-13 deficit against Peter Jones only to eventually lose out 17-21. Jordan Cain then secured South Ramsey’s second win of the night with a 21-13 victory over Walter McCarthy.
With the last two games on the green Marown had enough points on the board to be safe in the knowledge the title was theirs once again as Bob Clark managed to beat Glenn Boland 21-14, with Clark leading 12-1, Boland dug deep playing a longer mark to get back into the game before losing out. The last match of the night was a good battle between Matthew Keggen and Neil Withers who were up against Elaine Moore and Fiona Kennish with the South Ramsey ladies just losing out 20-21 to the Marown men. The final score on games was 7-3 to Marown, with the all important chalks also going in their favour 194-178 as they won by 16 chalks. The match was well contested throughout with four games going to the wire 21-20, however Marown were deserved winners on the night.
The presentation was made by Association Press Officer Glynn Hargraves who thanked Nobles Bowling Club for hosting the final, providing refreshments to the players and spectators. Marown captain Paul Kelly congratulated his team for their performance, whilst also offering his commiserations to South Ramsey.

Photo: Phil CainThe final set of matches in this season’s ladies open age bowling league were played last Wednesday evening. Castletown A consolidated their lead at the top of the table with an impressive 7-2 win away to Ballaugh. Stella Watterson and Kim Foy for Castletown plus Rose Waterworth for Ballaugh all won to single figures with Hilary Kermode for ‘Town’ having a battle with Louise Tebay crossing the line to win 21-19. Second placed South Ramsey also performed well winning 8-1 at home to neighbours Mooragh Park with five of South’s games being won to single figures. Stopping the full house for South was Caroline Parker who won to 17 against Lorraine Moore. Onchan also had a good result away to Castletown B winning 7-2 and dropping only four points. Two winners for Castletown B were Joy Stephens and Sonya Mercer who both won to 19 against Grace Gawne and Libby Andrade. Port St Mary hosted Marown A with the match finishing 5-4 to PSM. Closest game saw Margaret Tasker (PSM) pipping Lil Smith to 20. Douglas were away to Peel coming away with a 5-4 win with mum and daughter Paula and Harley Garrett and Katie Jacobs for Douglas plus Joyce Kelly and Val Allwood for Peel all winning their games to single figures. Marown B were at home to Port Erin with the Crosby ladies winning the match 6-3. Closest game saw Clare Cooper just getting the better of Rita Callister 21-19. The one outstanding match between Marown B home to Onchan carried forward from fixture 19 was played on Friday evening. Onchan won 6-3 with all games bar two going into double figures. Three winners for Marown B were Rebecca Teare, Deborah Leece and Helen Withers who won to 14, 13 and 15 respectively. Finishing the season on top was Castletown A on 3803 points, followed by South Ramsey second on 3596 and Marown A third on 3524. Many congratulations to the Castletown ladies for retaining the title and many congratulations also to Sue Gawne (Onchan) who played exceptionally well all season not losing a game to win the ladies individual merit and to South Ramsey’s Elaine Moore and Jenny Moore who finished in second and third places only one point and three points respectively behind Sue.
This is the final report of the season so I wish everyone well for the winter and hopefully see you all next season.
