Visiting Bowlers Win Keenan Fours

On Saturday Ballaugh Bowling Club held the 33rd Keenan Fours which was first held in 1989. The weather forecast was horrendous with heavy showers of torrential rain. As I drove out from a wet Ramsey the sky brightened and it had almost stopped raining. For the most part the showers missed and it was mainly was light drizzle or dry for the duration of the competition.

In the first quarter Final James Teare & Steven Waters (South Ramsey) played last year’s winners Andy Kennish (Onchan) & Reg Temporaza (Onchan). Andy and Reg were always ahead winning 21-13. In the second quarter final father and son Colin & Tom Kelly (Marown/Peel) played South Ramsey’s Jordan Cain & John Kennish. The scores were equal at end five but then Colin & Tom scored two threes and a two to win 21-12. In the third quarter final James Kelly & Brian Kelly (Marown) played Phil Quayle (Ballaugh) & Paul Allison (North Ramsey). The scores were level at 11-11 and then James & Brian won the next three ends reaching 17, Phil & Paul got the jack back and scored a four, two singles & two doubles to win 21-17. In the fourth quarter final Peter Harvey and Ken Wale (Whitby Bowling Club) played Kevin Quirk & Steve Parker (Onchan). Peter & Ken were always ahead, Kevin & Steve got back to within three points of them but to no avail with Peter & Ken winning 21-16.

In the first semi-final, Colin & Tom Kelly played Andy Kennish & Reg Temporaza. Colin & Tom were well in control coming out winners 21-8. In the second semi-final, Phil Quayle & Paul Allison played Peter Harvey and Ken Wale. They were 12 across at end 9. Unfortunately Phil & Paul lost the jack and didn’t score again with the score 21-12 to Peter & Ken.

The final was between Marown’s Colin & Tom Kelly playing Whitby’s Peter Harvey & Ken Wale. At end nine they were 12 across, the next three ends went to the visiting bowlers taking them to 18-12. Colin & Tom pulled it back over the next four ends making the score 18 across. Finally Peter & Ken got a three giving them the win 21-18.

At the conclusion John Maddrell (Club Captain) introduced Sponsor and long-time member John Keenan. They thanked Pat & her helpers for running the kitchen, keeping us all fed and watered, and for Richard Faragher & Maurice O’Reilly for running the competition so efficiently. John then presented the prizes and in their speech the winners thanked everyone for a great day, and mentioned that Ballaugh Club was in a magnificent setting with good facilities and the green was the only one that they had played on lately that had grass on it.

Gawne & Kennish Win Maddrell Mixed Doubles

On Sunday Ballaugh Bowling Club Held the Maddrell Mixed Doubles for the Claret Jug Trophy. Twenty six pairs entered, a little down on previous years possibly caused by the Manx Grand Prix, but it was still a long day due to the long games. The weather was fine but clouded over as the day progressed.

There was Ballaugh interest in all four Quarter Finals in the first Michele & Paul Cubbon who never got going against South Ramsey’s Gill Dixon & Glynn Hargraves losing 21-7. In the second home greeners Louise and Nigel Tebay fared a little better losing 21-11 to Onchan pair Sue Gawne and Andy Kennish.

The third quarter final was between local players Julie Reilly & John Maddrell and Margaret Tasker (Port St Mary) & Derek Allen (Onchan). For the first six ends they were within a point of each other, then Margaret & Derek moved ahead to win 21-13. In the fourth quarter final last year’s winner Clare Cooper (Marown) & Wayne Roberts (Port St Mary) played Ballaugh’s Pat Mason & John Kneen. Clare & Wayne were always ahead but Pat & John rallied briefly with the final result 21-14 to Clare & Wayne.

On to the semi-finals Dixon & Hargraves played Sue Gawne & Kennish. A longer game with Sue & Andy always ahead running out 21-16. The other semi-final was between Cooper & Roberts and Tasker & Allen. Clare & Wayne took control and won 21-8.

The final was between Clare Cooper & Wayne Roberts and Sue Gawne & Andy Kennish. There was no stopping Sue & Andy with a 21-8 win.

At the conclusion the prizes were presented by Club Captain & Sponsor John Maddrell who thanked the ladies in the kitchen for their hard work, Richard Faragher & Maurice O’Reilly for running the competition so efficiently and all the competitors for making at a great day, he then presented the prizes along with the Claret Jug to Sue & Andy.

Temporaza & Kennish Win Keenan 4’s

On Saturday Ballaugh Bowling Club held the 32nd Keenan 4’s which was first played for in 1989. There were 35 pairs entered, the weather being fine starting cloudy but improved throughout the day.

In the top half of the draw the first quarter final was an all South Ramsey affair with Alan Moore and Glynn Hargraves taking on Stefan Kelly and Stuart Marshall. A tight game at 17 across after 13 ends Alan and Glynn sealed the win 21-18. The second quarter final was between Bob Clark (Castletown) and David Bradford (South Ramsey) versus Marown stalwarts Paul Dunn and Neil Withers 16 across after 17 ends, then Clark and Bradford won the game 21-16.

In the bottom half of the draw the third quarter final was between visitors Andrew White and Colin Crawford (Two Gates) and Glenn Moore and Tony Smart (North Ramsey). White and Crawford showed their class with a 21-10 win. The final quarter final was between home greeners John Keenan and John Maddrell against Andy Kennish (Peel Sunset) and Reg Temporaza (Onchan). Kennish and Temporaza were always ahead winning 21-12.

In the semi-finals Moore and Hargraves beat Clark and Bradford 21-15, whilst Kennish and Temporaza beat White and Clark 21-16.

In the final Kennish and Temporaza took the first four ends without reply from Moore and Hargraves giving them a buffer to win 21-13.

At the conclusion Club Captain John Maddrell thanked John Keenan for sponsoring the event for the 32nd year, Matt Moffat, the green keeper for preparing the green, Pat Mason and her team of ladies for the catering. John also thanked Richard Faragher, Maurice O’Reilly & Trevor Jones for running the competition so efficiently.

Cooper & Roberts Win Maddrell Mixed Doubles

On Sunday Ballaugh Bowling Club held the Maddrell Mixed Doubles. There were 36 pairs entered, the weather being fine but generally cloudy perfect for playing bowls.

In the top half of the draw the first quarter final was Grace Gawne (Onchan) & Kevin Firth (Douglas) against Paula Firth (Onchan) & Sid Bolton (South Ramsey). Paula & Sid took an early lead which they kept winning 21-15. The second quarter final was between Rebecca Teare (Marown) & Nathan Hamilton (Castletown) and South Ramsey’s Elaine Moore & Glynn Hargraves. A high scoring game after nine ends it was 15-12 to Elaine & Glynn they then scored another four chalks to reach 19. They then lost the jack and in 5 ends Rebecca & Nathan reached 21 with a final score 21-19.

In the bottom half of the draw the third quarter final was between Tina Hampson (Onchan) & Dave Naughton (Nobles) and Clare Cooper (Marown) & Wayne Roberts (Port St. Mary). Clare and Wayne scored steadly to win 21-13. The final quarter final was Philippa Taylor (Marown) & Alec Taylor (Peel Sunset) and Sue Gawne (Onchan) & Andy Kennish (Peel Sunset). Another steadily scoring game saw Philippa & Alec win 21-14.

Both semi finals were one sided affairs, with the same score 21-9, Rebecca & Nathan beat Paula and Sid, while Clare & Wayne beat Philippa and Alec to go through to the final where Cooper & Roberts were the winners 21-11.

At the conclusion Club Captain & Sponsor John Maddrell thanked everyone for supporting the event Matt Moffatt, the green keeper for preparing the green, Pat Mason and her team of ladies for the catering plus John Bolton, Dickie Watson and Paul Davies for the barbeque. John also thanked Richard Faragher, Maurice O’Reilly & Trevor Jones for running the competition so efficiently.

Cooper & Clark Win Spar Mixed Doubles

On Sunday Ballaugh Bowling Club held the Spar Mixed Doubles on a glorious day in a wonderful setting. With a field of 45 pairs it was always going to be a long day with the final finishing just before 8pm.

In the top half of the draw the two quarter finals were Chris Price and Wayne Roberts (Port St Mary) against Clare Cooper (Marown) and Bob Clark (Castletown). After 10 ends there was just one point in it but Cooper and Clark then scored steadily and won 21-16. The second quarter final was an all South Ramsey affair with Elaine Moore and Glynn Hargraves versus Jenny Moore and James Teare after 10 ends it was 17-8 to Jenny and James but Elaine and Glynn pegged it back to 19-15 before James and Jenny got two singles to win 21-15.

In the bottom half of the draw home greeners Shirley Watling and Richard Green versus Lyn Bolton (South Ramsey) and Trevor Quayle (Port St Mary). The more experienced pairing of Bolton and Quayle took the game 21-9. The final quarter final was between Helen Withers and Karl Parker (Marown) versus home greeners Michele and Paul Cubbon. After 16 ends it was 18-17 to Withers and Parker then a three gave them the win 21-17. Before going on to the semi-finals can I commend the two Ballaugh pairings with all the players being relatively new to the sport they acquitted themselves well.

In the semi-final the game between Cooper and Clark versus Moore and Teare was close up to end 14 then Cooper and Clark took four straight ends culminating in a four to win 21-14. Bolton and Quayle were ahead from the fifth end against Withers and Parker and kept ahead to win 21-15.

As so to the final Claire and Bob scored consistently to win 21-13 against Bolton and Quayle.

At the conclusion Club Captain John Maddrell thanked everyone for supporting the event, the green keeper Matt Moffatt for preparing the green, the Ladies for such wonderful catering and Jonathon Kermode of Spar for sponsoring the competition for the 10th time. John also thanked Richard Faragher, Maurice O’Reilly and Trevor Jones for running the competition so efficiently. The prizes were presented by Jonathon Kermode on behalf of the sponsors Spar.

Hargraves & Moore Clinch Keenan Fours Title

Ballaugh Bowling Club hosted the 31st Keenan Fours on Saturday afternoon. There were 31 pairs entered and although it was two weeks earlier this year the weather was still autumnal with a dry start then a belt of rain sent the spectators seeking shelter. 

Bowing out in the quarter finals two sets of home greeners John Looney & Brian Lace 10-21 in their first ever open quarter final, and Ray Parry & Bobby Clayton (Ballaugh) 15-21 the other two pairings were Paul Cowley & Steve Gregg (Douglas) 7-21 Bob Callow & Shaun Seal (Douglas) 14-21.

Losing semi-finalist were Derek Allen (Port Erin) & Alec Taylor (Peel) 14-21 to Glynn Hargraves & Alan Moore (South Ramsey), along with home greeners Richard Hainge & Paul Cubbon who also lost 14-21 to Paul Dunn & Neil Withers (Marown).

The final was well contested between Alan Moore & Glynn Hargraves and Paul Dunn & Neil Withers. Dunn & Withers took an early lead at 15-10 at the 7th end, however Moore & Hargraves clawed to back to 17-17 by the 13th end after scoring a three to level the match. Moore & Hargraves took the next four ends in singles to win 21-17.

The presentations were made by John Keenan who thanked the players for supporting the event and all members for organising the day especially the ladies in the kitchen, John Bolton  and team on the BBQ, and Richard Faragher for running the competition. Thanks also to W.E. Teare’s butchers for the sausages & burgers, Ramsey Bakery for the Baps and rolls and Bry Radcliffe for the onions. Glynn Hargraves in his speech thanked John Keenan for his continued sponsorship of the competition and Ballaugh Club for organising the day, for running the competition together with the measurers and markers.

Dixon & Moore Claim Spar Mixed Pairs Title

On Sunday Ballaugh Bowling Club hosted the Spar Mixed Pairs. There were 37 pairs entered and the weather was perfect for some really good play.

Bowing out in the quarter finals were Paula Firth & Sid Bolton (Noble’s/South Ramsey), Joyce Ogden & Wayne Roberts (Marown/Port St Mary), Sylvia Kennaugh & Terry Bates (Noble’s) and Madison McMullan & Lee Christian (North Ramsey). 

Losing semi-finalists were all South Ramsey pairings with Kim Hargraves & Stefan Kelly losing out 11-21 to Jenny Moore & James Teare, whilst Elaine Moore & Glynn Hargraves just lost out 20-21 to Gill Dixon & Alan Moore.

The final was between Gill Dixon & Alan Moore and last year’s winners,  Jenny Moore & James Teare. Gill & Alan had a four on the sixth end which proved to be the difference and came out winners 21-16. 

The presentations were made by Jonathon Kermode of Mannin Retail (Spar) who was introduced by Competition Secretary, Richard Faragher who thanked the members for organising the event, thanks especially to the ladies in the kitchen. Gill Dixon in her speech thanked the Spar, the Sponsors, Ballaugh members for organising the competition especially Richard Faragher for running the competition together with the measurers and markers.

Keenan Pairs

On Saturday Ballaugh Bowling Club hosted the Keenan Pairs Men’s Doubles. There were 26 pairs entered for the competition, which was played in generally fine weather with just a few sharp showers.

Bowing out in the quarter finals were Edward Trustham & Barry MacDonald (Ballaugh), Lee Dawson (South Ramsey) & Wayne Roberts (Port St Mary), John Keenan & John Maddrell (Ballaugh) and Stefan Kelly & Sid Bolton (South Ramsey).

Losing semi-finalists were Peter Collister & Glynn Hargraves (South Ramsey) and Steve Waters & Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly (South Ramsey).

The final was between Marown’s Neil Withers & Paul Dunn and South Ramsey’s John Kennish & David Bradford, John & David took five of the first six ends to lead 16-7. Paul & Neil took the next four ends bringing it back to 16-12, however John and David got the jack back and took the last three ends to win 21-12.

The presentation was made by John Keenan, who noted that this was the 30th year of the Keenan Pairs then thanked the Ballaugh members for organising the competition, especially Richard Faragher for running the competition together with the ladies in the kitchen for such a good spread and Trevor Jones on the BBQ. David Bradford thanked John Keenan for his continued sponsorship of the competition, the club for running such a good event and complimented the club for how well the green had improved during the season.

Moore & Hargraves Win Again

On Sunday the Ballaugh Bowling Club hosted the Maddrell Mixed Pairs. There were 36 pairs entered and they enjoyed the fine weather and some good play.

Bowing out in the quarter finals were Paula Firth (Noble’s) & Sid Bolton (South Ramsey), Kim Hargraves & Stefan Kelly (South Ramsey), Fiona Kennish & Steven Waters (South Ramsey), along with Linda & Derek Cadamy (Port Erin).

Losing semi-finalists were Clare Cooper (Noble’s) & Walter McCarthy (Marown) and Chris Price (Port St Mary) & Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly (South Ramsey) which left the final an all South Ramsey affair between Elaine Moore & Glynn Hargraves and Jenny Moore & James Teare a replay of the Spar Mixed Pairs Final.

Jenny and James made a good start being 14-9 up after nine ends. Elaine and Glynn then had two three’s to take the lead 15-14, Elaine and Glynn took the last three ends to win 21-16.

The presentation was made by John Keenan on behalf of John Maddrell who could not be there, who thanked the Ballaugh members for organising the competition especially Richard Faragher for running the competition and Pat Mason and her team in the kitchen for such a good spread. Glynn in the speech thanked everyone for such a good competition.

Spar Mixed Doubles

On Sunday Ballaugh Bowling Club hosted the Spar Mixed Pairs. There were 29 pairs entered and they enjoyed the fine weather and some good play.

Bowing out in the quarter finals were Shirley and Gordon Corrin (Peel), Chris Price (Port St Mary and Dave Kelly (South Ramsey), Derek and Lynda Cadamy (Port Erin) and Alison Keggen (Noble’s) and Paul Kelly (Marown). 

Losing semi-finalists were Kim Hargraves & Stefan Kelly (South Ramsey) and Lil Smith (Marown) & Edward Carlyle (South Ramsey), which left the final an all South Ramsey affair between Elaine Moore & Glynn Hargraves and Jenny Moore & James Teare. 

Jenny and James made a good start winning the first three ends. After that it was close with only the five points scored in the first three ends the difference. Jenny and James finally won 21-15.
