Jamie is King Of The Town In Ballacashtal Cup

The ever-popular Ballacashtal Cup was held on Sunday attracting an entry of 69, made up of local and visiting bowlers. The Castletown green was in excellent condition, with the green running as well as it has done for a long time, with the blustery conditions making for a tricky green.

At the quarter final stages six of the eight players were visitors, with some excellent bowling and the green still running well as the shade started to fall on the green. Losing out were Marown’s Neil Withers who was heavily defeated 9-21 by former Ballacashtal Cup winner Charlie Roberts (Dukinfield Central), with Brian Thompson (Crescent) also losing to the same score to Steven Barber (Chapel Park). Wayne Ditchfield (Kirkham) the self-styled ‘Beast’ led 16-8 against James Higgins (Meersbrook) with the latter going on to score 13 chalks over the last 11 ends to win 21-19, while Jamie King (Wrockwardine Wood) knocked out the last standing home greener Nathan Cooil with a convincing 21-12 win to progress to the next round.

The standard in the semi-finals shifted up another gear, with doubles partners Roberts and Barber facing off, with the latter getting the better of his opponent on this occasion as he booked his spot in the final with a 21-18 win, while Higgins and King were nip and tuck throughout the game with Higgins leading 20-17, he couldn’t get the one he needed with his opponent scoring two quick-fire doubles to sneak home 21-20. King’s four doubles to Higgin’s two doubles ultimately made the difference in the game.

Both players were making their first appearance in the final of this competition, the final got underway with King making the stronger start taking an early 12-7 lead, only for Barber to punish a poor second bowl from his opponent as he played out the counting bowl to score two to bring the score back to 12-9. King went on to score seven singles to lead 19-14, with Barber clawing his way back in to the game winning four consecutive ends with three singles and a double to level the game at 19-19. A good lead from Barber putting him in the driving seat, with his second bowl not counting, King had the option to strike at the counting bowl, however he opted to play in with a perfect bowl to lead 20-19. A good second bowl on the last end which wasn’t beaten secured a 21-19 victory to win the famous trophy as he made a fantastic start to his week with his family arriving in time to see him claim the win.

The presentation was made by competition secretary Kath Kinley, who thanked the sponsors ABS Solutions for their continued support of the competition. Upon accepting the trophy and £300 first prize Jamie thanked everyone who had helped on the day, stating he was delighted to win the trophy on his first visit to the green.

Dido Kelly Claims Home Win in Jim Kernan Cup

South Ramsey hosted the Jim Kernan Cup on Saturday afternoon, in what is traditionally the first of the pre-festival opens with a fair entry of 46, on a superb playing surface and ideal conditions to play bowls.

Losing out at the quarter final stage were Wayne Roberts (Port St Mary), who just lost out 19-21 to Neil Withers (Marown), home greener Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly beat visitor Andy Mailer (Meersbrook) comfortably 21-13, with another home greener Peter Collister just losing out 20-21 to team mate James Teare. Peel man Tom Kelly had his run ended with a 16-21 defeat to Steve Barber (Chapel Park).

In the semi-finals Withers was quickest out of the traps against Kelly taking an early lead 10-7, with the latter responding to win nine of the next 10 ends scoring 14 points to run out with a 21-11 win to book his place in the final, while Teare was always in control against Barber with his 21-13 win taking him through to his first singles final.

The final started between the South Ramsey team mates with Teare winning the toss of the coin and heading for the mark that he had been playing throughout the day, however Kelly got in immediately and took a single on the following end. Over the next seven ends the player who won the end scored a double, with five of them being scored by Kelly he leapt into a commanding 16-8 lead playing his customary short length. Teare hit back with three singles, only to concede another two doubles to be staring down the barrel at 11-20. On the next end Kelly was lying game, with Teare taking the jack off the green to kill the end to hang in the game, he then picked up a single in the middle of the green, with no choice but to head into the corner, Kelly jumped in at the opportunity to win the game and secure the title with a 21-12 victory.

The presentation was made by South Ramsey chairman Steve Moore who thanked George Brew for once again sponsoring the competition, along with everyone who had helped with the running of the competition throughout the day. During his speech Kelly said he was delighted to pick up the trophy, with not entering many competitions over the past few years.

June Festival Preview

The Isle of Man June Bowls Festival gets underway next week with a host of top names from across the game hoping to be the lucky winner who gets their name on the trophy and the winners cheque for £3,000. The event is being held for the first time since June 2019, with Jack Dyson the current holder looking to defend the title.

On the first page of the draw David Poole (Pudsey) makes a long awaited return to the island, hoping to go one better than in 2000 when he lost out in the final to Andrew Spragg, while Billy Speed is one of the stand out names in the top half of the page. Another familiar name is previous winner Geoff Telford (Budenbergs), with his success in this competition arriving 25 years ago with a victory in the final over Norman Fletcher one of the legends of the game, while Merseyside man Dave McDermott (Birchleigh St Marys) will be hoping for a good week.

In the next section is a former Ballacashtal Cup winner Charlie Roberts (Dukinfield Central) who takes on North Lancs & Fylde County man Ashleigh Woof (Parkfield) in the first round. Ben Gloag (Grapes Hotel) could face two previous winners as early as the third round with Martin Gilpin (Hale) taking on Paul Bailey (Thongsbridge) in what could be the game of the first round, with some potentially explosive ties on the Thursday afternoon should the top names get through with Gareth Herbert (Woodman) also appearing on the page.

Owen Jackson (Parkfield) is another name who hasn’t been over for some time, he will be hoping to get through to the latter stages, while Marown captain Paul Dunn could play previous Festival winner John Bailey (Llanrwst) in the third round.

On page four Dan Jones (Llanrwst) could face off against Matt Kelly-Walley (Stretton Anglesey) in the second round, while current holder Jack Dyson should be able to navigate his way through his half of the page to make the Thursday afternoon session to reach the last 32.

Kez Smith (Crossgates BC) is another man to have his name etched into the history books in this competition, he will have to get past the likes of Chris Bly (Hopwood) and Conor Chamberlain (Stretton Anglesey) just to reach the latter stages of the competition.

The absence of bowls has obviously attracted a host of previous winners back to our shores, with one of the top names in the game Graeme I Wilson (AEU) making a long awaited return since his defeat to Jack Hargreaves in the final in June 2011, as Wilson looks to add to his four Festival titles. In the top half of the draw Craig Shore (Eastwood Park), James Wilcox (Crossgates BC) who picked up the title in 2017 and Stuart Mort (Parkfield) could all clash in the early rounds, while on the bottom half of the page Richie Goddard (Llanrwst) could face off with 2010 winner Wayne Ditchfield (Kirkham) in the second round at Onchan, with the latter having a tricky first round fixture against 1996 winner Carl Armitage (St Oswalds). There are a further two previous winners on the page with Ian Nicholson (Hale), Colin Kelly (Marown) in the mix. Danny Barwise (Birchleigh St Marys) has the unenviable task of taking on the Marown man in the first round.

On page seven Robby Fitzpatrick (Hoylake Central) the winner in 2012 may have to face Merseyside man Peter Jones (Wirral) with the latter having just relocated to the Island. On the bottom half of the page South Ramsey’s Jordan Cain will be hoping for a good week, while Jon Guess (Fairfield) will be in the mix.

June 2013 winner Neil Withers (Marown) could clash with another previous winner as early as the second round with David Jackson (Knutsford) potentially awaiting, while the rest of the page contains no previous winners this could be the chance for a new name to be etched on the famous trophy.

The runner up from June 1990 Colin Price (Dukinfield Central) will be looking to enjoy his week with a good run, while September 2002 winner David Bradford will be looking to juggle work commitments to be able to participate this week. Chris Kelly (Thongsbridge) will be looking to pick up his first Festival title to become yet another man from his club to have picked up the coveted title, however he will have to see off the challenge of Tommy King (Kirkham) in the first round.

On page 10 Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly who won the title at the Villa in June 2000 with a 21-15 win over Kevan Shaw, could face Crossgates man Mark Hughes as early as the second round, while Lee Johnstone (St Oswalds) who is the son of one the top players in the game Tommy Johnstone, with Lee a good player in his own right he will be looking to go far, however there could be some tricky ties awaiting against some experienced bowlers just to reach the last 32 on Thursday afternoon.

Towards the bottom of the draw Andrew Spragg (Eastwood Park) winner in September 2000 and two-time runner up has to get past Joseph Cranston (Crossgates BC) to progress.

On the final page current holder of the September title Callum Wraight (Llanrwst) starts three points back on his opponents due to the handicap, with this unlikely to faze Wraight, as he looks to win back to back festivals having won his first Festival last year. Alan Gilpin (Hale) won the Festival 18 years ago, he may well clash with Nick White (Thongsbridge) in the second round, whilst Gareth Lally (Crossgates BC) will be looking to repeat his June 2015 success.

With a bumper entry of 374 in the Men’s event – the highest we have seen for a number of years along with a host of top names returning for the first time in a long time, it promises to be one of the best festivals for a long time.

With six greens in use and several different competitions throughout the week, there is plenty of bowls for everyone it will undoubtedly make for a great week of bowls. Have a great week!

Following the break over T.T. fortnight it was back to bowls with the Rayner Shield quarter finals taking place on Monday and Tuesday evening.

Peel A had a tricky looking tie away to second division league leaders South Ramsey B, with the home team putting in a good performance to draw 4-4 on the night, however the chalks went comfortably in favour of the visitors who won by 17 chalks (118-135). For the home team Tony Dugdale was the best winner as he beat Alec Taylor 21-9, Alan Moore won 21-14 against Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly, Ben Dugdale performed well to beat Dean Kinley 21-13, with Steven Waters winning 21-15 against Peter Greenlees. Tom Kelly went on a run to win 21-11 against Chas Grills, while George Gadsby won 21-12 against Sid Bolton.

Stuey Clague was next closest to picking up a second win for the visitors before losing out 21-17 to Peter Collister. Rayner Plate

Third Division Marown D marched into the semi-finals of the Rayner Plate following a victory by just three chalks (171-174) over second division Outfit Peel C at their temporary home – Noble’s Two green. Despite the Crosby men losing 2-6, two single figure wins from Alan Gault who beat Paul Baker 21-9 and captain Steven Rough who led from the front with his 21-6 win over Jeff Wilson the handicap was enough to claim the victory.

Noble’s A had their second visit in succession to Breagle Glen after getting through a close game by just four chalks against Port Erin A (159-163) the previous week they repeated the trick at the same green as they crept into the next round (180-184) despite losing 3-5 on games they managed to progress into the next round.

Third Division team Noble’s B (+40) welcomed Rayner Plate favourites Division One side North Ramsey A (+15) who had to claw back a 25 deficit on the handicap, which they did in style thanks to three single figure wins. Paul Allison set the tone for the evening with his 21-1 win over Ciaran Broad, Adrian Skinner wasn’t too shabby with his 21-3 victory over Barry Salmon and Allan Callow just kept it to single figures with his 21-9 win over Terry Bates. Whilst Noble’s lost out by 29 chalks (146-175) they did impress as they took three games off a first division team with Phil Salmon beating Tony Smart 21-17, Stephen Corkill won 21-19 against John Cannan, while Grahem Moore did likewise against Brian Colquitt.

The lone winner for the Peel men was Andrew Cover who beat Paddy Murphy 21-19. Single figure wins from Tony Epifani (21-7) and Les Brookes (21-2) helped their cause as did two 21-11 wins from Paul Dougherty and Dave McCabe as these four results alone more than recovered the handicap, with their other two wins ensuring they reached the next round.

Division One League Action

League Action resumed on Wednesday in Canada Life International Division One as we reached the half way point in the league South Ramsey A hosted Castletown A with the home team winning 9-1. For the home team, Dido Kelly and David Bradford for the second time this week won to single figures. South Ramsey A top the pile ahead of Marown A by a single point with all to play for in the second half of the season.

Marown A matched the league leaders to stay firmly in the hunt as they also won 9-1, seeing off visitors Port Erin A at Crosby with five players winning to single figures they kept the Breagle Glen men down to just 78 chalks. Winning for the visitors Steve Durcan had a comfortable 21-14 win over Sam Clague.

Phil ‘Rambo’ Kelly Rolls Back The Years to Win Henry Kissack Memorial

Marown Bowling Club hosted the Henry Kissack Memorial Trophy on Sunday attracting an entry of 44, which was one fewer than last year with a notable absentee with the holder from the last two years – Andy Kennish missing out on the opportunity to defend the title once again. The handicap and scoring system was a throw-back to the 1980’s/90’s with games played 15-up instead of the usual 21-up.

Losing out in the quarter finals were Tom Kelly (Peel) who had his challenge ended by Onchan man Bernie McPhee 14-15, with Kelly not able to get the last point needed after being 14-10 up, whilst Neil Withers got the better of new Marown team mate Peter Jones 15-6. Another home greener reached the semi-final courtesy of a hard fought 15-12 win over South Ramsey’s Glynn Hargraves, with Phil Kelly defeating his captain Paul Dunn, with the latter also holding a 14-10 lead and failing to secure the last chalk needed only to lose out 15-14.

The semi-finals had Colin Kelly lose out 9-15 to teammate Phil Kelly, while Withers had it all his own way as he managed to end the challenge of McPhee with a 15-6 to book his place in the final.

The final started with both players former Manx Champions, with Withers (-4) who won on his own green in 2009, while Kelly (-2) won the title in 1994 on Noble’s, with the latter managing to hold on to and extend his advantage to lead 7-0 after eight ends. A mini-revival from Withers pulled the deficit back to just one chalk at 7-8 only for Kelly to score a single, followed by a double before conceding a single to then finish strongly with two doubles to take a deserved 15-8 victory to put the gloss on a fine day as he rolled back the years to get over the line against three of his teammates from the quarter final stage onwards to ensure he won the trophy for a third time following on from his previous successes in 1996 and 2000.

The presentation was made by Brian Kelly, who thanked the Marown members for assisting throughout the day, the team in the kitchen for the refreshments and the green keepers for the preparing the green.

Onchan fully deserved the win and now sit in third place, as they have quietly crept up the league, who remain top despite the defeat. Whilst South Ramsey have strengthened over the winter, it is far from a foregone conclusion that they will retain the league.

Marown A played their B Team on Monday evening with a lot of movement between the teams due to players missing or moving between the teams having a knock on effect. The higher ranked team still managed to come out on top with an 8-2 win, which could just as easily have been 9-1. Matthew Keggen stepped back in for the A, recorded a 21-4 win over John Kelly, which Neil Withers matched as he beat Kevin Kelly. League Leaders South Ramsey B had their match rearranged with their C Team from Monday to Friday evening, with those present raising a toast following the recent passing of a valued club member Martin Caley. The lower ranked side put in a good performance despite having to draft in three players to help out on the night with Franz ten Donkelaar impressing with a 21-20 win over Eddie Carlyle, Tony Hart recovered from a 2-13 deficit to beat Steven Waters 21-16. Shannon Wins Second Junior Manx Championship Title

A fantastic entry of 29 junior bowlers from all over the island entered the Junior Manx Championship at Onchan Bowling Club on Sunday. There was a good crowd in attendance with numbers approaching 100 at one stage. Once again there were more girls than boys through to the latter stages, which was fantastic to see, with some great bowls played by all the juniors.

Losing out at the quarter final stage were Graiagh Smith (Douglas), who lost 8-21 to Madison McMullan (Mooragh Park), whilst home greener Grace Gawne ended the hopes of Toby Hart (South Ramsey) who was defending the title he won last year with a 21-17 win. In the other half of the draw Shannon McMullan (Mooragh Park) seen off club mate Grayse Blencoe with a 21-5 victory, while another Mooragh Park player Victoria Johnson got a bye due to her opponent feeling unwell.

In the semi-finals Grace was up against Madison, with the score 7-5 to Grace after the first 12 ends with both players managing to keep their opponent to singles. From there both players picked up two’s, however it was Grace who prevailed with a 21-15 win over Madison, scoring five doubles to take her spot in the final. In the other semi-final Shannon made light work of her team mate Victoria with a 21-9 win.

In the final Grace with home advantage made the better start over Shannon, with the latter having won the title in 2019, Grace took a 6-2 lead after five ends. After 17 ends Grace who was playing extremely well, had built up a big lead at 16-8 to go strong favourite for the title, however Shannon with a bit more experience dug deep to work her way back into the game to win six consecutive ends on a longer length to reduce to the deficit to just one chalk at 15-16. Grace responded just in time, scoring a good two to lead 18-15. Shannon responded immediately to score three consecutive two’s over the middle of the green to see the game out and be crowned Junior Manx Champion for the second time with a 21-18 win. Credit must also go to Grace for her part in a good final. Grace will get another couple of chances to win the title, with this the last time that Shannon is eligible to play.

The presentation was made by Association Competition Committee Officer Steve Moore, who thanked all the juniors for taking part, Onchan Bowling Club for providing the refreshments and measurers. Association President Philip Kelly then presented the prizes, congratulated the juniors on the standard of bowls throughout the day.
