Essie Quayle Singles
The weather was not kind to the 31 ladies who gathered at Peel on Saturday to compete for the Essie Quayle Cup with fairly heavy rain during the later stages. The green was running well and there were some very close games during the afternoon.
Quarter-finals: Philippa Taylor 21, Mary Alderson 16; Chris Price 21, Janet Monk 20; Heather Horsburgh 21, Joyce Kelly 20; Lyn Bolton 21, Lin Ruscoe 16.
Semi-finals; Philippa Taylor 21, Chris Price 16; Lyn Bolton 21, Heather Horsburgh 10.
Early exchanges in the final brought the score level at 10-10 before Philippa had the better of the next few ends to take a lead 16-13 at which point Lyn pulled back to 16-17.Two singles and a 2 from Philippa brought her through to win 21-16 in an excellent game.
The presentation was made by the winner of the “Wet T-shirt” competition, a water-logged Heather Horsburgh who thanked all who entered and those who had stayed to the conclusion of the competition.

The draw has been made for the JMS Veteran’s Shield which starts on Thursday 11 September.

John Kennish Wins September Festival
John Kennish won the September festival with a 21-16 victory over fellow club and team-mate Dido Kelly.
In the ladies Chris Price was the furthest of the Manx Ladies
Junior Girls’ Merit
There was an entry of three girls for the Junior Girls Merit which was played at Ballaugh on Sunday 10 August. Despite a heavy shower at the beginning the weather cleared to allow some good bowls to be played.
The event was played as a Round-Robin with the girl with the highest number of chalks representing the island on 30 August.
Harley Garrett 15, Casey Bolton 8; Casey Bolton 15, Bethany Kennish 4; Harley Garrett 15, Bethany Kennish 4.
Final order : Harley Garrett 30 points, Casey Bolton 23 points and Bethany Kennish, who will be a threat in years to come, 8 points.

Missing ladies’ League Result
The C Tarleton Hodgson and Son Ltd sponsored ladies’ league got up to date on Wednesday 20 August when Purt le Moirrey and Castletown played their match postponed from 4 July.Castletown had the better of the meeting winning 7 of the 9 games, four of them to single figures. The two winners for the home side were Brenda Hawkard and Debra Cooper who also won to single figures.

Douglas Ladies’ Town Cup
There was an entry of 19 for the ladies’ singles sponsored by Paddy Power which was played at Douglas, alongside the men’s event, on Saturday 23 August. The warm weather and fast green led to some interesting games played in good spirit.
Quarter-finals : Pat Withers 21, Maureen Payne 16; Jo Smith 21, Jenny Moore 19; Rita Callan 21, Wendy Cowin 20; Paula Garrett 21, Lil Smith 10.
Semi-finals : Jo Smith 21, Pat Withers 18; Paula Garrett 21, Rita Callan 16
Paula got off to a strong start in the final winning seven of the first eight ends to lead 15-8. Jo then won the next five ends to level the score at 15-15, but could only manage to win one more end as Paula ran out the winner 21-16.
Roy Williams remarked how kind the weather had been for the competitions for the two Douglas Town Cups before introducing Andy Foster, from Paddy Power, to make the presentations.
Over 60s Men :: Castletown A Champions
Castletown A have retained their status of Over 60s Mens Champions following a 5-3 win over their nearest rivals Port St Mary A ending their title challenge with 3 games to go.
It is still all to play for for runner up with only 3 points seperating the next 5 teams.
Castletown have now won the league for 6 consecutive seasons, this latest victory being their 9th overall.

Ladies’ League Friday 15 August
A draw on points is a rare occurrence in the C Tarleton Hodgson and Son Ltd sponsored ladies’ league but it happened in two matches on the penultimate night of the 2014 season. Onchan with 5 wins and a 20 by Libby Andrade against Ellie Faragher would appear to be in the box seat against Ballaugh, however with all their players reaching double figures together with Christine Macdonald and Ann Gale both winning to single figures the two teams finished all square on points. At Castletown Port St Mary won 5 games while the home side had 4 wins and a 20 by Anne Oates against Tricia Bull, and with each team having a good win to single figures it was less surprising that this game also ended lavel on points. South Ramsey were top scorers of the night after a convincing 7-2 win over Douglas, while it was closer at Marown where despite winning 5-4 on games the home side ended 8 points behind Noble’s Mixed. Purt le Moirrey had a one game advantage over Port Erin but with three of their players winning to single figures they had a comfortable advantage on points. There were some close games at Peel Sunset where Mooragh Park won 5-4 on games. Two of the matches went all the way with Rosemary Quirk coming through 21-20 against Connie Pettegrew, while in the last game on the green Joyce Kelly just pipped Lilian Slinger by the same score.
Ladies’ over 60’s Thursday 14 August
It was the last match of the season in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league on Thursday 14 August with the top two places already settled. In third place Peel could have lost out to Ballaugh but secured their place after a very close match at Port Erin, which ended level on games with a four point advantage to the visitors. Ballaugh visited Port St Mary A where they drew on games, but wins to single figures by Val Macfarlane and Margaret Tasker gave the new champions a comfortable win on points. Onchan A had a profitable visit to second placed Mooragh Park, winning 4-2 on games in a high scoring match with all twelve players reaching double figures. Douglas were top scorers, dropping just 5 points against Port St Mary B, the two winners for the visiting side being Roma Ware and Pauline Worrall who edged out Wendy Cowin 21-20.
Congratulations go to Port St Mary A who have won the league for the first time.
Ladies’ over 60’s Tuesday 12 August
On the final week of the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league Port St Mary A were leaving nothing to chance as they scored a maximum at the Villa with Wendy Kennaugh and Win Collister winning to single figures. Margaret Corlett was top scorer for the home team reaching 18 against Rita Callister. It was a high-scoring match at Port St Mary B with the lowest individual score being 15. Two games went all the way with Brenda Hawkard coming through 21-20 against Mavis Franks while Gwen Tuck redressed the balance with a win over Edwina Reid by the same score. Hazel Hughes spoiled the party for Ballaugh as she won her game to deny them a full house although Phyllis Gelling came close to giving the visitors a second game reaching 19 against Jane Teare. Peel Sunset won 4-2 against Noble’s Mixed the game of the morning being the close game between Connie Pettegrew and Sylvia Kennaugh which Connie just claimed 21-19.Castletown had the better of Douglas 4-2 on games, Lynne Mansley and Wendy Cowin being the two winners for the visiting side, while Mooragh Park being a player short gave Onchan B a head start, which they exploited being the better side over the five games played.
