South Ramsey A & Marown B ‘Max Out’
South Ramsey C who suffered a narrow defeat in the Rayner Shield to Marown B as they bounced back to beat Port St Mary B in the league
Photo: Arnie WithersIn Canada Life International Division One this week there were two maximums with league leaders South Ramsey A extending their lead to six points courtesy of their 10-0 win over Port Erin A on a tricky home green with the visitors a man short and reaching just 63 chalks on the night.
Marown B made up some ground on their A Team with their second 10-0 of the season as they beat Peel B with the visitors now sat in a precarious position five points from safety.
Marown A will have been pleased to come away from the sunset city with a hard fought 3-7 win over Peel A, which could have just as easily have been 5-5 on another night with George Gadsby losing out 19-21 to Harry Barton, while Tommy McMeiken lost 20-21 to Neil Withers. The two single figure wins from Colin Kelly and captain Paul Dunn went a long way towards securing the aggregate for the Crosby men as they won by 15 chalks (133-148).
Onchan B closed the gap on visitors Castletown A to just two points following their 7-3 home win with the Onchan men winning by 13 chalks (149-136). Colin Spence won 21-8 against Alan Phair, which Derek Lewney cancelled out with his win over Bernie McPhee.
Port St Mary A continue to adjust to their temporary home, they managed to beat Douglas A 7-3 at Breagle Glen. Jordan Drewett stormed to a 21-6 win over Tommy Collister who played on the Port Erin green for a number of years. Tom Collins will have been buoyed following his first league win of the season as he won 21-15 win over Ian Moore. For the visitors’ captain Merv Sayle won 21-14 against Tim Williams, Keith Rise continues to impress with a 21-17 win over Wayne Roberts, while Andy Cannell battled to a 21-18 win over Nathan Hamilton.
The closest match of the night was at Mooragh Park between North Ramsey A and Onchan A with the match ending 4-4, the visitors edging the aggregate by two chalks (146-148). For Onchan Phil Kerruish was the best winner as he beat Ray Skelly 21-12, while Will Penhallurick worked hard for his 21-19 victory over Gary Merrill. For the home team Paul Allison continued his fine form with a 21-8 win over Andy Kennish, Rob Monk beat Mike Thomas 21-19, while Allan Callow beat Reg Temporaza 21-20.
In division Two South Ramsey B show no signs of slipping up following their 1-9 away win over Finch Hill A. The lone winner for Finch was Mark Taylor who only took the game up last season, as he beat the previously undefeated Steven Waters 21-12. Impressing for the visitors were the evergreen Chas Grills with a 21-15 win over Dave McCabe, Austin Hart performed well as he beat Les Brookes 21-13, while four single wins from Ed Carlyle, Bryan Corner, Sid Bolton and Tony Dugdale kept the home team to under 100 chalks (97-159).
Ballaugh A sit in second, they had a good evening at home to Onchan C as they won 9-1 with the Ballaugh men looking to be playing for second in a battle with Marown C. Barry McDonald got over the line 21-20 against Roger Payne, while Phil Quayle and John Keenan both won to single figures.
Marown C stayed in touch thanks to their 8-2 home win over Ballaugh B, with Dan Smith just missing out on getting an extra point for his team as he lost 20-21 to Dicky Watson. The home team had three winners to single figures with Walter McCarthy ruthlessly winning 21-1 against Paul Davis.
South Ramsey C returned to winning ways with a 7-3 home win over Port St Mary B, with the visitors a man short this surely cost them the aggregate as they lost out by eight chalks (138-130).
Douglas B hosted Peel C at the Villa, with the home claiming a 7-3 home win. Gary Conwell continued his return as he recorded another win, while Stuey Garrett was the best winner for the home team.
In Division Three with league leaders North Ramsey B taking their turn to sit out Marown D closed the gap to a single point thanks to a 3-7 win over Douglas C. All games in the fixture reached double figures.
Noble’s B stayed in touch just five points off top spot following their 9-1 home win over Castletown C, while Peel D and Finch Hill B drew 4-4 on games in the Sunset city with the home team despite being a man short edging the chalks (134-130) to take a 6-4 win.
Elsewhere Ballaugh C won 7-3 at home to Douglas D and Port Erin B won 8-2 at home to South Ramsey D, with three of their wins being keenly contested games. For the home team Ed Benson won 21-2 against debutant Hakim Thomas, while Geoff Collier hit back for the visitors with a 21-8 win over Trevor Barker.
Rayner Shield
Division Two side South Ramsey B were the first team to go through to the quarter finals of the Rayner Shield, as they ruthlessly beat Division One side Peel B 8-0, with the visitors failing to score 100 chalks (168-94).
The tie of the round was between South Ramsey A and Onchan A, with the visitors missing some key players they still put in a good performance as they lost 5-3 to the current holders. Matthew Quirk was the best winner with his 21-16 win over James Teare, while Kevin Quirk and Andy Kennish both edged their games 21-20 against David Bradford and Dido Kelly respectively.
Marown A progressed to the next round courtesy of a 7-1 home win over Castletown A with Mark Moorley the lone winner as he won 21-9 against Phil Kelly. Marown officially welcomed Peter Jones to the club as he made his debut, with Jones doing enough to get over the line 21-18 against Ron Williams.
Onchan B were defeated 3-5 at home to Peel A with the winners for the home team Mike Kelly, Steve Parker and Jamie Clague who beat Dave Smith, Tommy McMeiken and Tom Kelly respectively.
Rayner Plate specialists Marown C reached the quarter finals of the Shield following their 2-6 away win over North Ramsey B, while Douglas A cruised home 8-0 against their B Team, a result matched by Port St Mary A who beat Finch Hill B.
The last match of the Rayner Shield had South Ramsey C hosting Marown B, with the visitors looking to be on the end of a huge upset as they trailed 3-1 at the half way stage, however the back four Marown men hit back to run out with a 3-5 victory.
Rayner Plate
In the Rayner Plate the favourites North Ramsey A (+15) came away from their trip South with a 33 chalk victory (140-173) over Castletown C (+50), whilst the handicap helped get the job done for Peel D (+50) who beat Castletown B (+25) by 16 chalks (194-178). Ballaugh B (+35) and Finch Hill A (+35) started off the same handicap with the visitors Finch coming away with a sizeable 42 chalk victory (141-183) as they booked their quarter final spot.
Port St Mary B (+35) were at home to Ballaugh A (+25) with the match ending 4-4 on games, however the home team held onto their 10 chalk start to win by 19 chalks (175-154). Douglas C (+40) hosted Marown D (+65) with the visitors not needing the handicap as they won by a huge 64 chalks (159-223). Onchan C (+40) welcomed Noble’s B at the Park and the visitors progressed to the quarter finals despite losing 5-3 on games as they won by 19 chalks (181-200). The final fixture of the night between third division Ballaugh C (+50) and second division side Peel C (+45) with the home team having a marginal five chalk this wasn’t anywhere near enough to hold off the visitors as the Peel men won by 42 chalks (141-183).
The last match of the round is scheduled for 7th June with Port Erin A (+5) hosting Noble’s A (+45) at Breagle Glen.
Shannon Wins Second Junior Manx Championship Title

Photo: Glynn HargravesA fantastic entry of 29 junior bowlers from all over the island entered the Junior Manx Championship at Onchan Bowling Club on Sunday. There was a good crowd in attendance with numbers approaching 100 at one stage. Once again there were more girls than boys through to the latter stages, which was fantastic to see, with some great bowls played by all the juniors.
Losing out at the quarter final stage were Graiagh Smith (Douglas), who lost 8-21 to Madison McMullan (Mooragh Park), whilst home greener Grace Gawne ended the hopes of Toby Hart (South Ramsey) who was defending the title he won last year with a 21-17 win. In the other half of the draw Shannon McMullan (Mooragh Park) seen off club mate Grayse Blencoe with a 21-5 victory, while another Mooragh Park player Victoria Johnson got a bye due to her opponent feeling unwell.
In the semi-finals Grace was up against Madison, with the score 7-5 to Grace after the first 12 ends with both players managing to keep their opponent to singles. From there both players picked up two’s, however it was Grace who prevailed with a 21-15 win over Madison, scoring five doubles to take her spot in the final. In the other semi-final Shannon made light work of her team mate Victoria with a 21-9 win.
In the final Grace with home advantage made the better start over Shannon, with the latter having won the title in 2019, Grace took a 6-2 lead after five ends. After 17 ends Grace who was playing extremely well, had built up a big lead at 16-8 to go strong favourite for the title, however Shannon with a bit more experience dug deep to work her way back into the game to win six consecutive ends on a longer length to reduce to the deficit to just one chalk at 15-16. Grace responded just in time, scoring a good two to lead 18-15. Shannon responded immediately to score three consecutive two’s over the middle of the green to see the game out and be crowned Junior Manx Champion for the second time with a 21-18 win. Credit must also go to Grace for her part in a good final. Grace will get another couple of chances to win the title, with this the last time that Shannon is eligible to play.
The presentation was made by Association Competition Committee Officer Steve Moore, who thanked all the juniors for taking part, Onchan Bowling Club for providing the refreshments and measurers. Association President Philip Kelly then presented the prizes, congratulated the juniors on the standard of bowls throughout the day.
Parker Wins George Hawkins Trophy

Photo: Janet MonkBowling conditions could not have been better last Wednesday 18th when thirty-five bowlers competed at Mooragh Park in the 2nd George Hawkins Memorial Trophy.
Watched by George’s family throughout the opening rounds we saw some tremendous bowling with lots of games going the full distance.
The losing quarter finalists were Philippa Taylor against Brian Colquitt 13-21. Janet Monk against Steve Parker 17-21. David Callow against Mike Skelly 6-21 and Geoff Porter against Ray Skelly 15-21.
The semi-finals saw Brian Colquitt and Steve Parker playing a very close game with Steve winning 21-17 and in the other semi-Mike Skelly and Ray Skelly played well against each other but Mike won 21-14.
In the final Steve and Mike both played well but Steve managed to get in front and left too big a gap for Mike to fill.
Congratulations Steve on your win 21-14.
The prizes were presented by the sponsors Beryl Hawkins and family members in memory of George. Steve recalled his own happy memories of George and thanked everyone at North Ramsey for hosting the event and in particular he praised everyone connected with the vast improvement of the green and its preparation for this competition.
Marown A Bounce Back – Mixed League Continues

Photo: Arnie WithersIn Canada Life International Division One this week Marown A bounced back from defeat in their previous outing with a 10-0 win (168-69) over Peel B. Just two of the visiting players made it into double figures, with Paul Quirk losing out 13-21 to Neil Withers and David Proctor was the highest scorer as he scored 16 against Paul Kelly. Phil Kelly was the best winner for the home team as he bounced back from his heavy defeat the previous week to beat Philip Pemberton 21-5.
League leaders South Ramsey A had a good 2-8 away win as they took on Peel A in the Sunset city. Winning for the home team were Dean Kinley with a 21-19 win over Jordan Cain, while George Gadsby was pushed all the way and got over the line with a 21-20 win against Bob Clark. Dido Kelly kept up his unbeaten start to the season with a 21-18 win over Peter Greenlees.
Marown B remain in third place, they came away from the Villa with a 3-7 win over Douglas A. Kevin Kelly stepped into the B Team and did not look out of place in any way as he won 21-6 against Shaun Seal. For the home team Andy Cannell was the best winner with a 21-8 victory over Jamie Joughin.
Onchan A sit in joint third place with Marown B, as they took on Onchan B, following their 8-2 victory with three single figure wins, while the two winners for the B were Bernie McPhee who beat Neil Dunwell 21-13, and Mike Alexander who beat Mike Thomas 21-19.
Port Erin A had their spirits lifted as they claimed their first league win of the season as they beat North Ramsey A 7-3 at Breagle Glen. Allan Callow was the best winner on the night as he beat Steve Durcan 21-8, Adrian Skinner won 21-12 against Peter Hulley and Paul Allison made it four wins from four games played as he continues his comeback having not played league bowls for five years.
Castletown A hosted Port St Mary A at the Crofts, as they managed to scrape a 7-3 home win taking the aggregate by a solitary chalk (144-143). For Town Mark Moorley beat Trevor Quayle in a good quality game. For the visitors Paul Skelly picked up only his second league win of the season, as did Jordan Drewett who returned to his former stomping ground as he scrambled home with a 21-20 win over Ron Williams, while it wasn’t such a happy return for Nathan Hamilton who lost out 18-21 to George Foy.
In Division Two South Ramsey B kept the foot on the throttle with a 9-1 win over third placed Ballaugh A as they used home advantage to good effect despite the heavy rain overnight and the showers throughout. Austin Hart returned to the team with a 21-7 win over Gordie Moore, captain Ben Dugdale beat Richard Hainge 21-18, while Alan Moore was staring down the barrel at a 0-9 deficit against Patrick Grant, before recovering only to be lying two down at 20-20 and bowled in to win the game 21-20. Preventing the whitewash was Barry McDonald who beat Eddie Carlyle 21-13.
Marown C remain in second spot thanks to another 7-3 home win over Douglas B on Tuesday, with Walter McCarthy winning 21-7 against Stuart Garrett, while Dan Smith had it all to do as he beat Mark Kneen 21-20. For the Villa men it was good to see the return of Gary Conwell, who made it two wins from two played as he beat Peter Kelly 21-14.
Noble’s A had a tough time on Monday evening as they hosted South Ramsey C, with the visitors coming away with a 2-8 win. For the visitors’ captain Tony Hart led the way with a 21-5 win over Martyn Hobson, while Jim Collister was the best winner for the home team as he beat Anthony Kelly 21-15, with Alex Yates not far behind as he won 21-16 against James Evans.
Onchan C came away from taking on Ballaugh B with a vital 2-8 win to go level on points with their opponent on the night. Their cause was helped by Brian Aspden’s 21-7 win over Mike Buckeridge, while Sid McKnight won 21-20 against Ray Parry.
Finch Hill A stayed in the hunt as they are in fourth place following a good 1-9 away win over Port St Mary B. Individual merit leader Paul Dougherty just about held on to his unbeaten record as he beat Peter Collins 21-20. The Finch men just missed out on a 10-0 win by four chalks as Nicholas Peterson managed to see off Tony Epifani 21-17.
In Division Three North Ramsey B kept a firm grip on top spot as they beat Port Erin B 9-1 at Mooragh Park. The visitors cause not helped by being two men short as they failed to score 100 chalks (164-78) with Ed Benson the only winner for the visitors as he beat John Piekalns 21-17.
Marown D are well placed in second spot, just eight points behind the league leaders with 47 points and a game in hand as they won 2-8 away to Douglas D. Jay Waters continues to lead the individual merit following his 21-7 win over Mark Clarke, while Charlie Bell who is relatively new to the game beat William Cowley 21-6.
South Ramsey D weren’t able to make home advantage count against Noble’s B, with some doubt as to whether the match would go ahead due to the heavy rain. For South Matthew Corkill continues his fine start to the season as he made it six wins from seven games as he beat Michael Johnson 21-10. Richie Davies won 21-16 against Noel Ash, while Ryan Hargraves edged the battle of the Juniors as he won 21-20 against Alex Hampson. For the visitors Ciaran Broad having just taken up bowls this season also made it six wins from seven, as he beat Billy Blair 21-11 to claim the best win for his team.
Castletown C had a tough night at home to Peel D as they lost 3-7. Colin Moore was the best winner for the visitors with a 21-4 win over Dylan Marsh. For Town Paul Cromwell was their best winner as he beat Charlie McMeiken 21-7.
There were two matches called off last week due to the weather – In Division Two Peel C were due to host Castletown B, while in Division Three Finch Hill B were due to play Douglas C.
The second round of fixtures in the Mixed League group stages were played on Wednesday evening with both matches in Group A being won 6-3 by the home teams. North Ramsey A beat Onchan A at Mooragh Park by 46 chalks (159-113), while on the other side of Ramsey South A beat Castletown A by 27 chalks (164-137).
In Group B Marown A came away from another visit to Breagle Glen with a 3-6 win over Port St Mary as they won by 29 chalks (136-165). Douglas A also won 6-3 at home to Port Erin with the home team winning by 40 chalks (172-132).
In the Plate Competition in Group A, Noble’s appear to be shaping up as favourites in their group as they beat North Ramsey B 7-2 at home, winning by a margin of 59 chalks (171-112). Peel recorded a solid 2-7 away win over Castletown B winning comfortably on chalks (125-165).
In Group B Marown B hosted South Ramsey B at Crosby with the young home team just falling short by six chalks (154-160), with some good individual performances from the juniors and new bowlers on both teams, with the visitors winning 3-6. Ballaugh recorded the biggest win of the night as they won 7-2 at home to Douglas B, as they won by 62 chalks (176-114).
Janet Is Top Lady

Photo - Gill MorganIn the Ladies Open Age crown green bowls league last Friday night Castletown A missed out on scoring a maximum by one point against their B Team with four of the A team winning their games to single figures. Stopping the full house was Joy Stephens who held Tracy Moore to 20. Mooragh Park travelled to Peel and although they lost the match on games they won on points helped by Janet Monk and Maureen Hamilton winning to single figures. Marown B had a good away win at Douglas with Marown junior Grace Cooper just losing to 19 against Sue Caley. Port St Mary had a battle with Ballaugh at home winning six games to three and by only two points. The three winners for Ballaugh were Pat Mason, Louise Tebay and Julie Reilly. Barbara Graham nearly made it four wins for Ballaugh losing to 20 against Lorna Brady-Glover. Marown A hosted Port Erin and despite being a player short they won seven games to two and by 39 points. Lone winner for Port Erin was Caroline Whitehead who won to single figures. South Ramsey travelled to Onchan with the match finishing five games to four and by 11 points to Onchan with Onchan junior Grace Gawne winning to 18 against Judy Kelly.
Finch Hill scored their second maximum of the season at home against Mooragh Park B last Tuesday morning in the Over 60’s ladies league. Closest game saw Wendy Cowin hold Anne Kean to 16. Port Erin A hosted Port St Mary B with only three games being played due to both teams being short of players. Given this, Port Erin won five games to one with Jean Thackrah and Jacqui Elliot winning to single figures. Mooragh Park A hosted neighbours Ballaugh winning five games to one. Lone winner for Ballaugh was Rose Waterworth who won to 12 against Karen McGurgan. Marown A had a good home win against Onchan A with all games going into double figures. Two winners for Onchan were Lynda Clarke and Caroline Corlett who won to 14 and 19 respectively. Home derby between Castletown B & A resulted in a full house for the A team with highest scoring game being Ann Hollingworth winning to 13 against Pat Rigby. Peel travelled to South Ramsey coming away winning by two points in a three all match. Toughest game saw Gillian Jopson (South) just crossing the line to 20 against Terry Berry. Port Erin B had a good four games to two win away to Onchan B with Libbi Andrade and Wendy Samson being the two winners for Onchan.
On Thursday morning last week, Peel scored a maximum at home to Onchan B with four games being won to single figures. Castletown A won five games to one at home against Mooragh Park. Janet Monk was the lone winner for Mooragh winning to 6. Mooragh Park B hosted Castletown B with both teams scoring over 100. Closest game of the match was Frances Radcliffe (Mooragh) winning to 19 against Linda Dobinson. Port Erin A won four games to two away at Ballaugh with three of Port’s games being won to single figures. South Ramsey also had a good four games to one win at home to Port St Mary A with the win being helped by Jill Quayle winning to single figures. Finch Hill travelled to Port Erin B in a low scoring match with only one game making it into double figures when Brenda Williams (Finch) won to 12 against Kay Primrose-Smith. Marown travelled to Port St Mary B on Friday morning coming away with a five games to one win. Highest scoring game saw Lynda Cadamy winning to 15 against Edwina Reid.
The Ladies Association Top Lady Invitational competition was held on Sunday at Onchan. Going out in the quarter final stage were Rebecca Teare (Marown), Philippa Taylor (Marown), Fiona Kennish (South Ramsey) and Clare Cooper (Marown) with losing semi-finals Paula Garrett (Douglas) and Caroline Whitehead (Port Erin) who lost to current holder Jenny Moore (South Ramsey) and Janet Monk (Mooragh Park) respectively. The final between Jenny and Janet, as anticipated, was well fought being nip and tuck throughout. Janet, who was 13-18 down at one point, dug deep and with very good lead bowls took the next five ends to run out 21-18 for a well deserved win. The win was made even sweeter for Janet as her son, Robert, won the Men’s Association Cup the same afternoon at Finch Hill. The presentation was made by Caroline Whitehead, Competition Committee member, who thanked Onchan for the use of their green and to their ladies for providing refreshments throughout the afternoon. Janet, in her speech, reiterated what Caroline had said also thanking all her opponents.
Monk Wins First Association Cup

Photo: Arnie WithersFinch Hill Bowling Club hosted the Association Cup on Sunday afternoon with the competition attracting 47 entries.
The weather held up until the quarter final stage only for the rain to arrive before clearing up fairly quickly. Losing out were Port St Mary’s Trevor Quayle who lost 16-21 to Marown’s Paul Dunn, Will Penhallurick (Onchan) was beaten 14-21 by Brian Kelly (Marown). Colin Kelly (Marown) ended the challenge of Nathan Hamilton (Port St Mary) with a 21-14 win, whilst Rob Monk (North Ramsey) also progressed with a 21-14 victory over Eddie Carlyle (South Ramsey).
In the semi-finals Colin Kelly put paid to the challenge of Dunn with a 21-13 win, whilst Monk booked his place in the final with his win over Brian Kelly, with the latter threatening a comeback from 13-20 down before losing out 17-21.
The final got underway with Kelly the current holder of the title having the better start as he scored two doubles in the first three ends to take a 9-6 lead. Monk recovered to win six of the next seven ends on a shorter mark over the middle of the green to take a four point lead at 14-10. Kelly responded in a similar manner as he played his favoured corners to go ahead 18-16, only for Monk to take a single thanks to a good second bowl, followed up by a double to go within touching distance of victory at 19-18. Kelly hit back scoring two points to lead 20-19. A single from Monk ensured it went to the wire at 20-20 and his lead bowl 18 inches away wasn’t beaten by Kelly and was enough for Monk to earn a hard fought 21-20 win in a good quality game.
The presentation was made by competition secretary Matthew Keggen, who thanked Finch Hill for preparing the green, the club members for providing helpers and refreshments throughout the day and the competition committee for the smooth running of the competition. Association President Phil Kelly was then introduced to present the prizes. Upon accepting the trophy Monk thanked everyone who had helped, along with his opponents, going on to say that he didn’t think he would get back to being able to win competitions having suffered back problems for a number of years, that he was quite emotional to win the trophy after a testing time. It turned out to be a very good day for the Monk family with Rob’s mother Janet also going on to win the Top Lady at Onchan.

Photo: Phil CainIt was another busy week of bowls in the Canada Life International bowling leagues, with a double week which proved pivotal in division one. Monday evening had the wind play a factor around the island, with most of the greens affected by the conditions.
In Division One League leaders Marown A hosted Douglas A at Crosby, with Marown captain Paul Dunn leading the way with a 21-5 win over Gordon Wynne-Smythe, while their newest signing Sam Clague battled through to claim a 21-20 win over Merv Sayle. The only winners for the visitors was Keith Rise who performed brilliantly to beat Paul Kelly 21-11.
Second placed South Ramsey A stayed in touch as they matched the Marown result with their own 9-1 home win over near neighbours North Ramsey A. The lone winner for North was Paul Allison who impressed with a 21-17 win over Chas Grills, while Rob Monk just missed out 20-21 to former teammate Jordan Cain.
Elsewhere Onchan A recorded a solid 8-2 win over Marown B. Port Erin A lost 3-7 at home to Port St Mary A. Castletown A won 9-1 at the Crofts against Peel B, while Peel A dropped three games in their home 7-3 victory over Onchan.
On Friday evening in near perfect conditions the top two clashed with South Ramsey A hosting league leaders Marown A. The green was tricky for both teams to master, with the home team fully aware that Marown had won on their two previous league visits to South Ramsey. There was no mistake made on this occasion with the league champions using home advantage to take an 8-2 win on the night, with no games particularly close the result could not be argued. South Ramsey A hit top spot for the first time this season with 57 points, five points ahead of Marown A.
Marown B responded to Monday’s poor result with a 10-0 home win over Castletown A, while Onchan A had an excellent week with another good win as they beat Port St Mary A 1-9 at Breagle Glen, with the visitors having a ‘new’ name on their team sheet with Andy Kennish turning out for Onchan and winning on his second debut for the club. Those who have been around long enough will recall that Andy had a stint at Onchan in the mid-1980’s.
Onchan B did their cause no harm with an 8-2 home win over Port Erin A, Peel A battled to a 4-6 away win over North Ramsey A at Mooragh Park, while Douglas A battled back from Monday’s heavy defeat to beat Peel B 2-8 in the Sunset City.
In Division Two South Ramsey B started the week in top spot with a hard fought 4-6 away win over Ballaugh B in tough conditions, while on Thursday a solid 1-9 away win over Onchan C ensured they ended the week top of the pile.
Marown C jumped up into second spot thanks to a 7-3 home win over South Ramsey C on Tuesday, then battled to a 4-6 away win over Castletown B to ensure they stayed ahead of the Castletown men. Castletown stay in touch in third place, three points behind Marown C as they also lost 8-2 away to Douglas B.
In Division Three North Ramsey B are currently top on 46 points following two good wins starting the week with a 10-0 home win over Peel D, ending the week with a 3-7 away win over Noble’s B.
Sitting seven points behind in second place – with a game in hand are Marown D who continue to fly high as they took two 7-3 wins last week as they beat Castletown C away from home and Finch Hill B at Crosby.
South Ramsey D who finished third from bottom last year are currently in third place on 37 points as they beat Douglas C 8-2 at home, then lost 6-4 away to Peel D losing out on the aggregate by just four chalks (140-136).
Douglas C ended the week in fourth place on 35 points as they bounced back from their defeat on Tuesday as they won 7-3 at home to Castletown C. Noble’s B had a good win 3-7 away to Ballaugh C to finish the week in fifth spot with 34 points.

Photo: Sue GawneAn Isle of Man Junior Team took part in the British Crown Green Bowling Association six-a-side Championship at Windle Bowling Club in St Helens on Sunday, on what turned out to be a fantastic day.
Every single one of them did themselves and the Island proud in the way that they performed and more importantly the way they behaved on and off the green, not to mention how well turned out they all were.
They won the first game 5-1 on games against North Lancs & Fylde by a landslide 51 chalks 88-37, the second game was also won 5-1 against Cheshire by 12 chalks (77-65), and the third game won 4-2 against Greater Manchester B to win by 40 chalks (77-37).
In the final round Cumbria won on games 4-2, cruelly edged the game by a single chalk (73-72) as they topped the group with 8 points.
With 2 points for each win the team finished on 6 points to finish in second place overall in the group and now qualify to play at Heaton Park in Manchester on Sunday 10th July.
Thank you to everyone who came to support, it was great to have more supporters than players there to help cheer the Juniors on.
Leagues Take Shape – Mixed Underway

Marown A retained top spot thanks to a solid 2-8 away win at Mooragh Park following their second visit in the space of a week with Dean Kipling recording the best win on the night with a 21-9 win over Gary Merrill. For the home team Allan Callow continued his fine start to the season with a 21-12 win over Neil Withers, who suffered a rare defeat, while Paul Allison beat Harry Barton 21-13. The next closest to picking up another point for the home team was Adrian Skinner who lost out 18-21 to Marown captain Paul Dunn.
Marown B defeated Port Erin A 9-1 at Crosby, with Bernie Durcan the lone winner for the visitors with a 21-20 win over John Gelling, with son Steve Durcan next highest as he lost out 18-21 to Jerome Surridge. For the home team Glenn Boland beat Derek Cadamy 21-5, with Karl Parker their second single figure winner as he beat Alan Crebbin 21-9.
Peel A came away from Breagle Glen with a 2-8 win over Port St Mary A. Winners for the home team were Trevor Quayle who had a comfortable 21-13 victory over Robert Middleton, while Robbie Cooil seen off Peter Greenlees with a 21-17 win. For the Peel men Tom Kelly performed well to beat Wayne Roberts 21-16, a result matched by Stevie Kelly who beat Paul Skelly. Dean Kinley beat Nathan Hamilton 21-17, while the best winner on the night was Tommy McMeiken who trounced Jordan Drewett 21-3.
South Ramsey A managed to stay in touch with the league leaders Marown A, coming away from the Park with a 1-9 win over Onchan B to sit just a point behind the league leaders. Chas Grills returned to the A Team, recovering from a slow start to win 21-16 against Colin Brown, was backed up by four single figures winners from David Bradford, Dido Kelly, Jordan Cain and Glynn Hargraves. Mike Alexander prevented the whitewash with his 21-17 win over James Teare.
Douglas A continued their rise up the table after a difficult start to the season with a 9-1 home win over Castletown A with some hard fought wins from Andy Cannell 21-18 over George Foy, Willie Cowley and Merv Sayle won 21-19 against Juan Kermode and Mark Moorley respectively, while Ian Moore won 21-17 against Town captain Ian Watson. Jimmy Sansom and Shaun Seal had more straightforward victories over Derek Lewney and Peter Oates as they won to single figures. For the visitors Nathan Cooil had a fairly comfortable 21-14 win over Keith Rise.
The closest match of the night was out West as Peel B hosted Onchan A with the visitors snatching a 4-6 win as they won the aggregate two points by 14 chalks (135-149) with the wins fairly comfortable with Phil Kerruish the best winner as he beat Andy Mackie 21-8. Two of the home team wins were close with Paul ‘Pooky’ Quirk beating Neil Dunwell 21-18, Brian Lindsay won 21-19 against Will Penhallurick, while the most notable win was from Philip ‘Pip’ Pemberton who beat Reg Temporaza 21-16.
In Division Two league leaders South Ramsey B dropped three points at home to Port St Mary B, with Tony Dugdale and Bryan Corner leading the race for the individual merit as they maintained their unbeaten start to the season, while Christian Caley was the best winner on the night with his 21-6 win over Bernard Thackrah. The three winners for the visitors were Steve Franks with a 21-10 win over Austin Hart, Derek Cain beat Ben Dugdale 21-16, while Ray Maddrell won 21-18 against Sid Bolton.
Castletown B remain in second place and closed the gap on the leaders to four points as they beat Ballaugh B 9-1 at the Crofts, with four single figure wins from George Peach, Willie Corkill, Alan Phair and Collin Holland. For Ballaugh Dicky Watson was the only winner with a 21-17 win over John Matheson, while John Looney battled hard before losing out 18-21 to Billy Jones.
Peel C made the short trip along the coast as they took on Ballaugh A. The home team recorded a 7-3 win, Steve Grant just edging home against Philip Clarke, while John ‘Shirt’ Keenan won 21-8 against Eddie Convery. For the visitors Tony Carroon was in good form as he beat Peter Graham 21-3, while Harry Kelly and Alan Cromwell both won 21-17 in their wins against Richard Hainge and Nigel Tebay respectively. Just 11 chalks separated teams as the Ballaugh men took the aggregate (142-131).
Finch Hill A lost out 4-6 at home to Marown C with the visitors taking a deserved win, helped by Kevin Kelly won beat Mark Taylor 21-5. The visitors closest win was from Peter Kelly, who beat Paddy Murphy 21-19, while three of their defeats could have gone the other way as John Kelly lost 19-21 to Paul Dougherty who remains unbeaten, Conor Keenan missed out 18-21 to Les Brookes, while Stewart Clague fell short 17-21. Captain Stephen Rundle returned to the fold following his recent holiday as he helped his team with a 21-14 win over Dave Jones.
South Ramsey C managed to snatch a 6-4 home victory over Douglas B by just three chalks (142-139) with Lee Dawson their best winner as he beat Keith Fearnley 21-10. For the visitors Andy Foster won to single figures as he beat Andy Morgan 21-8, Steve Cook seen off Toby Hart 21-19, while Dave Pease just got over the line 21-20 against Tony Hart.
Onchan B made home advantage count as they beat Nobles A 6-4 with two single figures wins from Ken Clarke and Kelvin McNicholl making the difference on the aggregate as the home team won by 19 chalks (144-125). For the visitors Martyn Hobson beat Denis Maxwell 21-10, Jim Collister beat Paul Callister 21-14, Jay Elliott won 21-16 against Sid McKnight, while Alex Yates dug deep to win 21-20 against Roger Payne.
In Division Three North Ramsey B went top as they took advantage of Noble’s B taking their turn to sit out with the second true draw of the season following their 5-5 draw away to Douglas C, who themselves sit in second place, with the Villa men able to call on Tommy Collister and Kevin Firth, who both won their games, while Nick Firth picked up a fine 21-15 over Brian Colquitt while Ashley Halsall picked up their fourth win of the night. Winning for the visitors were Ray Skelly, Tony Smart, Lee Christian and Mike Skelly.
Marown D recorded a 7-3 win over South Ramsey D on Tuesday, helped by two big wins from Steve Rough, who beat Chris Brown 21-3, while Alan Gault won 21-9 against Steve Kelly. Best winner for the visitors was Matthew Corkill as he beat Keith Watterson 21-4.
Finch Hill B kept the visitors Castletown C to under 100 chalks with their 7-3 win. Five single figure victories helped their cause with Frank Christian, Stephen Oates, Kevin Stannard, John Smith and Sam Stannard-Duke all winning comfortably.
Elsewhere Peel D lost out 4-6 at home to Ballaugh C as they lost the aggregate by a solitary chalk (134-135), while Port Erin B took a comfortable 8-2 win at home to Douglas D.
The Mixed League group stages got underway on Thursday evening with the match of the night in the Championship Group A going right to the wire with North Ramsey A winning 5-4 on games, however the visitors got the two points available on the night as they edged the chalks (151-152). The other match in the group was also close with Onchan A beating Castletown A by 13 chalks (160-153).
In Group B Marown A came away from Breagle Glen with a 1-8 win over Port Erin as they dropped just 10 chalks winning by a 50-point margin (129-179). Douglas A Hosted Port St Mary A with the visitors winning by 28 chalks (130-158)
In the Plate Competition in Group A Peel seen off visitors North Ramsey B by 22 chalks (180-158), while it was great to see Nobles field a mixed team as they won comfortably by 59 chalks (108-167) against a Castletown B side fielded to give Juniors an opportunity to gain experience.
In Group B Marown B also fielded a team packed with Juniors and new Bowlers as they performed admirably winning four games on the night only to lose out by 24 chalks (132-156) to Douglas B at Crosby, while Ballaugh top the group thanks to a 32 chalk away win (133-165) over South Ramsey B.

Boland Wins First Mens Title

Photo: Arnie WithersNobles Bowling Club was the venue chosen to host the inaugural 3R’s Limited sponsored Association Non Winners Cup on Sunday afternoon with the competition open to those who had never won a Men’s singles open previously, with 29 players entering to take their chance to win their first open.
Losing quarter finalists were 17 year old Toby Hart (South Ramsey) who lost 17-21 to Marown’s Walter McCarthy, Tim Williams (Port St Mary) was well beaten 11-21 by Willie Cowley (Douglas), while home greener Jay Elliott battled hard before losing out 17-21 to Glenn Boland (Marown), with Ballaugh man Peter Corlett having his run ended by former home greener Les Brookes (Finch Hill) with a 11-21 defeat.
Both semi-finals were well contested with Cowley just edging it 21-20 against McCarthy, while Boland booked his place in the final with a 21-19 victory over Brookes.
The final got underway with Boland starting as favourite having played for longer than his opponent, also with a number of Junior titles to his name having won the Junior Manx Championship and Junior Manx Masters on more than one occasion. His opponent Cowley will not have been phased by the occasion, himself being a well known referee in local football over the years. It was Boland who took control of the final as he played corner to crown and back against his fellow left hander to keep Cowley down to scoring just four chalks throughout the game to take a well deserved 21-9 win and his first Men’s open title.
At the conclusion of play the presentation was made by Association Competition Secretary Matthew Keggen who thanked 3R’s Limited for the sponsorship, Noble’s for hosting the competition, the players for entering, and all who came to support.
