Ladies League 24 April

After the glorious weather earlier in the week conditions returned to normal to give a miserable night for the matches played in the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored league on Friday 24 April. The sun shone for the matches in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league on Tuesday 21 April, adding to the enjoyment of the competition. Only two of the matches were drawn on games. Noble’s were level with Castletown, but came close to a 4-2 lead as Sylvia Kennaugh lost out 20-21 to Sue Peach and had a clear win on points. The two winners for the home side were Maureen Wright and Mary Kinrade. British Merit Qualifier

There was a disappointing entry of eight ladies’ for the British Merit Qualifier played at Finch Hill on Sunday 19 April.

The sunshine at the start of the afternoon soon disappeared to leave a very cold and windy afternoon, but the inclement weather did not detract from the standard of bowls on display.

In the first round ( the quarter-finals) there were some close games with Rosie Winkle reaching 17 against Helen Martin and Lil Smith coming from behind to pip Lyn Bolton 21-20.

Quarter-finals: Caroline Whitehead 21, Mary Alderson 7; Helen Martin 21, Rosie Winkle 17; Lil Smith 21, Lyn Bolton 20; Janet Monk 21, Shirley Whelan 14.

The weather was probably at its worst for the semi-finals where, despite some good bowling from their opponents, Helen and Janet came through to meet in the final.

Semi-finals: Helen Martin 21, Caroline Whitehead 12; Janet Monk 21, Lil Smith 13.

Janet had the better of the early exchanges in the final, having the advantage 10-4 before Helen started to fight back closing to 12-14. With two 2’s and a single Janet stretched her lead to 19-12, before Helen won the next six ends to make it 17-20 her opponent taking the next end to win 21-17.

Janet will now represent the island in the British Merit at Nuneaton on 11 July.

Association President, Pat Robertson congratulated the players and thanked the Finch Hill for the use of their facilities.

Special thanks go to Anne Caine who came along and provided very welcome warm drinks on a very cold afternoon.

There were some close games at Marown where Mary Black edged out Jean Quine 21-20, that result being balanced by Joyce Kelly against Shirley Whelan, Peel coming out ahead on points in a match that ended level on games. Port St Mary A were on top form at Mooragh Park with four players winning to single figures, although Maureen Wright denied them a full house. The closest match of the day was at Onchan A where despite winning 4-2 on games Ballaugh took victory by just one chalk with Rita Callan winning to single figures for the home side and Libby Andrade coming close to levelling the games score when she reached 19 against Ann Gale.

Ladies’ League 8 April

The weather was kind for the start of the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored ladies’ league on Wednesday 8 April. Champions Port St Mary got off to a good start dropping just 15 points against Marown but their total was surpassed by Noble’s who reached 179 points against Ballaugh where Rebecca Teare took Jenny Maddrell all the way before going down 20-21.The new-look Mooragh Park had a tough time against South Ramsey, but they had a few inexperienced players who will only get better as the season progresses. Things were evenly balanced at Douglas with the home side going down to Port Erin by one point. Purt-le-Moirrey may be the team to keep an eye on this year as they started with a good win over Castletown.
