Ladies’ over 60’s 3 July
Port St Mary A have extended their lead at the top of the table after they were visited by Mooragh Park on Thursday 3 July. Taking five games, with Win Collister and Val Macfarlane winning to single figures, they were denied a maximum by. Jean Radcliffe winning her game for the visitors. There was a strong performance by Ballaugh at Noble’s Mixed as they dropped just 5 points. With every player reaching double figures, Mixed were also able to post a score over 100. The match at Castletown ended level on games but wins to single figures by Marie Ashurst, Ann Hollingworth and Anne Oates, together with Barbara Young reaching 20 against Chris Holland, gave the home side a considerable points advantage. A good win to single figures by Muriel Cain denied Port Erin a full house while at Noble‘s 3 the highlight of the morning was the game between Theresia Britten and Joyce Kelly, with Joyce eventually coming through 21-19. Onchan B‘s other winner was Viv Rush who won to single figures. Onchan A had the better of Marown 4-2 on games with Hazel Hughes winning to single figures, the two winners for Marown being Mary Alderson and Celia Joughin..
Ladies’ over 60’s 1 July
It was a strange match at Peel on Tuesday 1 July in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league with Joyce Kelly and Mary Moffatt for the home side and Jan Osborne for Douglas having convincing wins to single figures. On the other hand Patsy Rush and Rose Corfield had a close match with Patsy coming through 21-19 while Heather Horsburgh and Jo Oldam kept the rest waiting for their dinner before Heather eventually came through 21-20.Noble’s Mixed had the better of Villa 4-2 on games in a high-scoring match, the two winners for the home side being Muriel Cain and Peggy Chapman, while Marilyn Ellison spoiled the party for Port St Mary B being the lone winner for Onchan B. All the games went to double figures at Onchan A where Hazel Hughes and Flo Kelly were the two winners for the home side while Heather Reynolds put up a battling performance to reach 19 against Tricia Bull. Rita Callan and Lilian Slinger won to single figures against Castletown, whose two winners were Anne Oates and Ann Hollingworth, while Ballaugh won 4-2 on games against Marown with Jenny Maddrell winning to single figures as did Mary Alderson for the visitors.

Ladies’ over 60’s league Thursday 26 June
Fixtures in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league reached the half-way stage on Thursday 26 June. Port St Mary start the second half with a 100 point advantage over second placed Mooragh Park while Peel Sunset are not too far behind closely followed by Noble’s Mixed and Ballaugh.
Port St Mary did not have it all their own way at Ballaugh winning only two games. A win to single figures by Margaret Tasker together with a win by Tricia Bull and Val Macfarlane reaching 20 against Jenny Maddrell gave them a points win. Onchan A were unfortunately a player short against Mooragh Park who fell short of a maximum thanks to a win by Ann Watterson for the home side. Wins by Voirrey Curphey and Jean Thackrah, who edged out Connie Pettegrew 21-20, denied Peel Sunset a maximum against Port Erin. The score was close at the Villa despite the home side winning 5-1 on games. A win to single figures by Mary Alderson together with the other players getting into double figures meant that Marown lost by just 4 points. It ended level on games at Castletown, but wins to single figures by Marie Ashurst and Sue Peach gave the home side an 11 pojnt lead. Douglas had the better of Port St Mary B 4-2 on games the winners for the home side being Brenda Hawkard and Pauline Worrall.
Jean Kelly Semi-finals
Castletown had a 15 point advantage on handicap when they visited Port St Mary in the semi-final of the Jean Kelly Memorial team handicap competition on Thursday 26 June. Despite an advantage of 6-3 on games with Val Macfarlane winning to single figures, wins to single figures by Sue Peach and Hannah Kermode together with a win for Marie Ashurst and losing scores in the high teens gave Castletown a win by 1 point before the handicap kicking in increased their lead to 16 points.
Again the result was not dependant on the handicap when Peel Sunset visited South Ramsey. The home side had the better of it in terms of games won, but wins to single figures by Philippa Taylor and Heather Horsburgh, backed by wins from Joyce Kelly and Jean Quine together with solid scores from those who didn’t win their games gave them an eight point advantage on the green.

Ladies’ league Friday 27 June
Mooragh Park closed in on league leaders, Port St Mary, as they scored a maximum against Douglas in the C Tarleton Hodgson and Son Ltd sponsored ladies’ league on Friday 27 June. Douglas put up some spirited performances with Kath King reaching 20 against Kim Hargraves and Jan Osborne and Harley Garrett both scoring 19. Port St Mary could not match the maximum but won 5 games against Noble’s Mixed, four of them to single figures, while all their players reached double figures to give them a comfortable points victory. Things were close at Marown where the visitors won 5-4 on games. Wins to single figures by Mary Alderson and Shirley Whelan, together with Lil Smith’s 20 against Ann Gale gave Marown a 2 point advantage. Castletown took 7 games in their match against Port Erin, the two winners for the visitors being Voirrey Curphey and Sylvia Shelbourne, while Onchan had a tough battle when they entertained South Ramsey, going down 3-6 with Elaine Moore and Lyn Bolton winning to single figures for the visitors. The scoreline was very similar at Peel, although it was the home team who had the advantage on games and points with Joyce Kelly and Sue Jones winning to single figures.
IOM Ladies’ Association Triples
IOM LADIES’ ASSOCIATION TRIPLES
Port Erin was the venue for the IOM Ladies’ Association Triples played on Sunday 29 June. On a warm afternoon sixteen teams contested for the title on a very tricky green, when most of the games provided very close encounters.
Semi-finals: Janet Monk, Lilian Slinger and Helen Martin 21, Ann Hollingworth, Hilary Kermode and Hannah Kermode 10
Elaine Moore, Jill Quayle and Heather Horsburgh 21, Jenny Moore, Shelley Kennish and Fiona Kennish 17
The final was closely contested, the early exchanges leaving the score level at 14-14 after nine ends, at which point the Mooragh combo scored a 5 taking them to 19. However the South Ramsey/ Peel Sunset coalition were not going to give up easily and took the next four ends to take the lead 20-19, but were unable to take the next end which gave the match to Lilian, Janet and Helen 21-20.
The presentation was made by Association president, Pat Robertson, who thanked Port Erin for the use of their green and facilities, and everyone who had helped with the smooth running of the event.
Marown Ladies’ Singles
Thirty-three ladies’ gathered at Marown on Saturday 28 June to contest the ladies’ singles competition for the Julia North Cup.
With fine weather and the green not too fast there were some close games from the off.
Quarter-finals: Lilian Slinger 21, Chris Price 14; Lil Smith 21, Shirley Corrin 8; Philippa Taylor 21, Paula Garrett 17; Janet Monk 21, Mary Alderson 11.
Semi-finals: Lilian Slinger 21, Lil Smith 19; Janet Monk 21, Philippa Taylor 8
This set up a mother/daughter final with Lilian, as last year’s winner, having to give Janet 1 start. However Janet set out more strongly quickly racing to a 14-7 lead. From that point Lilian fought to get within three points at 14-17 but Janet took the next three ends to take the title 21-14.
Rosie Winckle thanked those who had entered and those who had stayed to see the final.. She also thanked those who had helped during the afternoon before introducing Julia North who congratulated the finalists, saying how much she had enjoyed watching the bowls, before presenting the prizes.
Ladies’ Performances in June Festival
After the ladies’ successes in last year’s June Festival this year’s results were a little more muted. However this is not to say that there weren’t some notable performances with seven local ladies making it through to the last sixteen in the Main Competition. Rosie Winckle, Ann Maddrell, Lyn Bolton and Elaine Moore bowed out valiantly at that stage but Lilian Slinger, Chris Price and Janet Monk progressed to the quarter-finals Janet going on to meet eventual runner-up Angela Athersmith in the semi-final, giving her the Trophy for the Manx player progressing furthest in the competition.
In the Tourism event Kellie Maddrell-Reeve and Viv Grills both made it through to the quarter-finals played on Thursday morning., Kellie going out at that stage to eventual winner Jackie Owen. Viv Grills had a good win over Amanda Nicholas to go on and meet Jackie Owen in the semi-final where she played well and was unlucky to lose 21-20.
Philippa Taylor lost out in a close match in the consolation semi-finals while Chris Price, partnered by Linda Hough, won the ladies’ doubles final beating Angela Athersmith and Eileen Pye 11-4 in the final
Ladies’ League Friday 20 June
After the excitement of Festival week it was back to normality as matches resumed on Friday night in the C Tarleton Hodgson and Son Ltd sponsored ladies’ league.
The match between the top two teams took place at Port St Mary where Port St Mary A had the better of reigning champions Mooragh Park by 6-3 on games and a big enough points difference to top the table at the half-way stage of the season. Castletown had the highest score of the night, dropping just one game against Onchan, courtesy of Jo Smith, to hold third position, South Ramsey had a 25 point advantage over Noble’s Mixed to overtake them for fourth place with a three point lead. There were some close battles, with Rebecca teare losing out 19-21 to Shelley Kennish and Paula Firth being pipped to the post, 20-21, by Lyn Bolton.
Marown were unfortunately a player short giving the advantage to Purt le Moirrey who had a comfortable 6-3 win. The game of the match saw Celia Joughin taking Pauline Worrall all the way just losing out 20-21.Douglas had the better of Ballaugh winning 5-4 on games while things were close at Port Erin with the home side coming through by just 5 points.
