North Ramsey Win Ismay Cup

North Ramsey A defeated Port St Mary A 7-2 to lift the Ismay Cup for the 2nd time following their maiden win in 2008. Following this victory North Ramsey will now turn their attention back to the league where they sit 3 points clear of Castletown and will be hoping to run out Champions and complete an impressive League-Ismay double.

South Ramsey Win Rayner Shield

After thirty three years of waiting South Ramsey A once again won the coveted Rayner Shield with a convincing 7-2 win over Port St Mary A at NoblesPark on Friday.

With Port having taught South a lesson when they played in the league just a few games ago all looked set for the southerners to etch their name on the trophy for the first time, but no body told the Northerners this.

They were simply brilliant. Every single one of them put in a cup final performance and in this gear it’s hard to think that even Onchan A or Marown A could have stopped them in their tacks.

Things started well for the Ramsey side with Captain John Kennish winning on the same green he won the June Festival on as he saw off the only other Manx Man to make festival finals day Ewan Cooil 21-14.

On paper the match looked like it could go to the wire and with Paul Skelly levelling things for Port with a 21-13 win over Chas Grills it looked like it could do just that.

Just then South moved into top gear with the next three games off the green all going in their favour with Alan Moore beating Juan Hargraves 21-12, Jerome Surridge seeing off the challenge of Mikey Collister 21-16 and Peter Collister getting the better of Port Captain Rob Cooil 21-12.

Trevor Quayle got one back for the Spaniards beating semi final hero James Teare 21-10 before it was all over. The next tree games were off the green in quick succession as John Kennish’s charges sealed victory in devastating fashion with Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly beating Ron Mayxcox 21-5, Gary Conwell defeating Ray Watterson 21 9 and Adrian Skinner finding his best to come home 21-10 against Chris Oates.

My heart goes out to Port St Mary who have been brilliant all season and again fall at the final hurdle, and I am certain they will have their day, but this wasn’t it. The day belonged to South Ramsey who were at their majestic best and a joy to behold and they deserve every accolade afforded them after a fantastic performance.

Port St Mary Win Jean Kelly Memorial Trophy

Port St Mary have won the Jean Kelly Memorial Trophy for the third time defeating South Ramsey by 5 chalks.

With South Ramsey starting with a 5 point handicap Port St Mary needed to get out of the traps early and Trish Bull got them off to a flying start winning 21-3. South replied first with a 21-12 win for Gill Dixon against Katy Williams before Elaine Moore and Fiona Kennish won to 16 and 15 respectively. Jayne Kneen completed the first 5 jacks winning 21-14 against Shelly Kennish meaning at the halfway stage the match was all square at 85 points each.

Jenny Moore was first off the second half with a brilliant 21-13 win over Margaret Tasker before Alison Keggen hit back with a 21-10 win meaning Port had a slender 3 point advantage with two games left on the green.

Both teams knew they were in for a tight finish with Lyn Bolton 19-17 up on Wyn Collister and Val Macfarlane level pegging with Jill Quayle in the mid-teens. Winnie battle hard but Lyn came off winning 21-19 and all the attention turned to the final game between Jill and Val who were both playing well under pressure. The game rocked back and forth but Val managed the crucial break away beating Jill to 17 and securing a 5 chalk victory for Port St Mary.

Both set of players should be commended for the standard of bowling on what was a well prepared and good playing surface at Onchan. South Ramsey will go home having won the battle on games but Port St Mary won the war and picked up the trophy on what was the closest final for a number of years.

At the conclusion of the competition Pat Robinson (Ladies President) thanked Heather Horsburgh for running the sheet and Moore Kelly and his family for the prizes and lovely food for the players and spectators.
