C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored ladies’ league Friday 29 July

League leaders of the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored ladies’ league, Port St Mary, were spurred on by the fact that Castletown had been closing the gap between them, and showed them no mercy on Friday 29 July.The home side won eight of the nine games, only Kim Foy winning her game for the visitors, although it might have ended 6-3 as both Hannah Drewett and Kath Kinley reached 20, against Kath Looney and Jayne Kneen respectively. South Ramsey’s 5-4 win at Douglas was enough for them to leapfrog over Castletown to take second place by just 6 points. The star game of the match was Jan Osborne’s battle against Bethany Kennish, the home player coming through 21-20.Ballaugh dropped one point against Mooragh Park whose lone winner was Julie Reilly who pipped Ann Gale 21-20.Peel Sunset went down 6-3 against Noble’s, who have changed places with them in the table on points against, although the two teams have equal points for. Onchan are still at the bottom, but put up a creditable performance against Purt le Moirrey winning four games

JMS Veterans’ Shield

It was a fine morning as Peel Sunset travelled to Onchan for their quarter-final of the JMS Shield. Peel had a 5 point advantage on handicap and after the first three games they seemed to be well on their way with a lead of 71-52 (including handicaps), but in an exciting second half Onchan slowly clawed their way back, led by Joyce Gardiner’s win to single figures. Lynda Wilson and Mary Moffatt fought well for the westerners, both reaching 17 against Libby Andrade and Lynda Clarke respectively, but Onchan came out on top by the narrowest of margins to progress to the semi-finals in September.

Trend over 60’s Ladies’ league Tuesday 2 August

Port St Mary A came so close to a full house in the Trend sponsored over 60’s league on Tuesday 2 August, falling one point short thanks to Joan Murphy’s 21 -20 win over Win Collister.Breagle were also in strong form against Mooragh Park, with Maureen Wright being the sole winner for the visitors, while Nobles drew on games with Port Erin but secured a good win on points when Lin Ruscoe and Pat Dacre won to single figures. It was a high scoring game between Port St Mary B and Douglas, where the home side won 4-2 on games, but with every player reaching double figures for the visitors they too amassed a score of over 100.Castletown’s match was drawn on games, but with two wins to single figures for each side, it was a low scoring match with the home side ending with the advantage on points. Marown fought well to end up just 6 points adrift of Peel Sunset who won 4-2 on games.

Ladies’ over 60’s league Thursday 28 July

It was not a great morning weather-wise in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league on Thursday 28 July, but Douglas got the majority of the rain and had to postpone their match. The other five matches went ahead, Castletown relishing the conditions and posting a maximum against Mooragh Park, for whom Peggy Freeman put up most resistance reaching 17 against Sheila Preston. It was Jenny Cain for Breagle who spoiled Port Erin’s party in the “local derby”, while Lynda Clarke was the fly in the ointment for league leaders Port St Mary A. Peel Sunset had a 4-2 win over Port St Mary B, the two winners for the Southerners being Brenda Hawkard and Roma Ware, while it could not have been much closer at Ballaugh, where both teams won three games, two to single figures, the home side coming through by a single point.

Ladies’ over 60’s league Tuesday 26 July

Onchan were top scorers in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league on Tuesday 26 July, when they were denied a full house by Ann Gale, although Brenda Bowyer almost gave Ballaugh a second game, reaching 19 against Maureen Payne. Castletown also fell one game short of a maximum, Jackie Elliott saving Port Erin’s blushes by winning her game. Despite Villa winning 4-2, three games to single figures, Mooragh Park had two good wins from Moira Anderson and Maureen Wright, while Breagle showed the value of fighting for every point as they went down by a single point although losing 2-4 on games Nobles and Peel ended level on games but wins to single figures by Mary Moffatt and Cath Parker gave the visitors the advantage on points. With all their players reaching double figures Port St Mary B ended ahead on points in a match drawn on games.

Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league Thursday 21 July

Peel Sunset were top scorers on Thursday 21 July, although their hopes of a maximum were shattered by Hesba Skelly, for Breagle, who came through 21-20 against Rose Corfield. The other 21-20 in the match went Peel’s way with Jean Quine edging out Steph Swift. Voirrey Oates and Brenda Bowyer were the two winners for Ballaugh against Port St Mary A while the match at Douglas ended level on games. With the three winners for Castletown all winning to single figures the visitors had a good win on points.Mooragh Park had two winners against Onchan in Anne Kean and Maureen Wright, while Moira Anderson lost out 20-21 to Maureen Payne. Villa seem to be on a roll at the moment, gaining a second win of the week at Port Erin by a margin of 10 points in a match that was drawn on games. The Marown players all reached double figures with winners in Shirley Whelan and Mair Moore, but still ended in second place against Nobles

Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league Tuesday 19 July

There were two maximums in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league on Tuesday 19 July. Port St Mary won three games to single figures but Moira Anderson nearly spoiled their party reaching 19 against Tricia Bull. Nobles also won six games against Port St Mary B whose top scorer was Gill Aughton. Peel Sunset did not get much joy when they travelled to Castletown, the home side scoring 120 while the visitors had only two winners in Mary Moffatt and Heather Horsburgh. Villa had the better of the “local derby” when they played club-mates, Douglas, winning 4-2, the feature game seeing Jan Osborne just lose out 20-21 to Brenda Williams. Despite winning only two games, Onchan won their match against Port Erin by ten points, with Maureen Payne and Rita Callan winning to single figures and Flo Kelly and Libby Andrade both scoring 19. Marown had a comfortable win at Breagle, 4-2 on games and a margin of 15 points

Nobles’ Ladies’ Singles

NOBLES JORDAN CUP LADIES SINGLES

There was a disappointing entry of 18 for the ladies’ singles played at Nobles on Saturday 23 July for the Jordan Cup, but what the field lacked in quantity it made up for in quality !

Quarter-finals: Paula Firth 21, Lin Ruscoe 20; Chris Price 21, Heather Horsburgh 11; Tricia Bull 21, Joyce Ogden 14; Shelley Kennish 21, Lynda Cadamy 18

Semi-finals: Chris Price 21, Paula Firth 16; Shelley Kennish 21, Tricia Bull 12

The final could almost be described as “a game of two halves”, as Chris raced into a lead of 13-5. Playing a mark along the far edge of the green Shelley then won seven ends in a row to level at 13-13, and the next end to take the lead for the first time at 15-13.The game was evenly matched for the next seven ends, to leave Shelley at 19-17, before she cleared up the last two to win 21-17.

The presentation was made by Joyce Ogden who thanked all those involved in running the event, particularly the ladies for doing the refreshments and Stuart for running the sheet.

 

Ladies’ Doubles Onchan

There was an entry of fourteen pairs for the ladies’ doubles at Onchan on Wednesday 20 July, where players were competing for the Commissioners’ Cup.

Despite the small entry there was a lot of fine bowling on display.

Semi-finals: Helen Martin and Janet Monk 21, Philippa Taylor and Joyce Ogden 13; Christine Price and Maureen Payne 21, Rosemary Quirk and Caroline Parker 8.

In the final Helen and Janet took the first three ends to take a 10-6 lead, but Maureen and Chris soon levelled at 10 across. The ends were shared and the teams were level again at 15-15 and at 16 across. Two 2’s in the next three ends saw Chris and Maureen reach 20-17, and despite Helen and Janet taking the next end, they came through to win 21-18

As the Chairman of the Commissioners was unable to attend, the cup and replicas were presented by Onchan Club Captain, Libby Andrade, who thanked all those responsible for the smooth running of the event.

Ladies’ Millennium Fours

Ten quartets entered for the Association Millennium Fours played at Nobles’ 2 on Saturday 16 July. Each match consisted of two singles and a doubles, the protagonists being selected by a draw, each game being to 15 giving a possible score of 45 for the match.

The weather stayed fair and allowed for some enjoyable bowling.

In the semi-finals the Nobles’ team won 39-28 against the Ronairco Babes with Paula Firth and Sylvia Kennaugh winning the doubles against Linda Dawson and Tracy Moore 15-9 and Clare Cooper coming through 15-4 against Chris Holland. In reply Amanda Lawler beat Lin Ruscoe 15-9, but it was too little, too late !

The other semi-final through up the closest result of the afternoon, with Pink Ladies A edging out Mix and Match 39-38.The two singles were split, Mavis Franks beating Caroline Parker 15-9 and Rosemary Quirk responding 15-11 against Lynda Cadamy. This meant that Helen Martin and Janet Monk had to win 15-12 against Philippa Taylor and Mary Alderson for the Pink Ladies team to go through, which they duly did.

In the final the three games were on the green at the same time. Things were tight after the two singles came off, with Paula Firth beating Janet Monk 15-7 and in reply Rosemary Quirk coming through 15-11 against Clare Cooper, meaning Nobles were four points ahead awaiting the result of the doubles. There was not long to wait as the Pink Ladies won 15-4 to make the match result 37-30 in their favour.

Association president Rosie Winckle thanked all who had helped during the afternoon, Nobles for the use of their facilities and Mooragh Park for measuring and providing the refreshments.
