Results: Canada Life International Manx Championship
Gladys Cowell Ladies’ over 60’s singles
The sun shone in the west for the Gladys Cowell ladies’ over 60’s singles open played at Peel on Saturday 14 May. With a field of 30, a fast green and the good weather it was an ideal day for playing bowls. Some very close matches of a high standard were enjoyed by the spectators, many of whom stayed to the end.
Quarter-finals: Ann Hollingworth 21, Win Collister 14; Jean Thackrah 21, Voirrey Curphey 15; Margaret Tasker 21, Cath Parker 15; Mary Moffatt 21, Sylvia Kennaugh 19
Semi-finals: Ann Hollingworth 21, Jean Thackrah 10; Mary Moffatt 21, Margaret Tasker 18.
In the final Mary was in imperious form, with Ann having little in response. The Peel player won in 12 ends with seven 2s and a single, Ann scoring three singles in reply.

The presentation was made by club president, Heather Horsburgh, who thanked all those who had entered, those who had stayed to watch the final, and, of course, all the Peel ladies’ who had helped in any way in the smooth running of the afternoon.
Ladies’ over 60’s Tuesday 10 May
Castletown claimed a maximum against Mooragh Park in the Trend sponsored over 60’s league on Tuesday 10 May with only two of the visiting players, Moira Anderson and Frances Radcliffe reaching double figures. Chris Holland spared Port St Mary’s blushes when her win denied Peel Sunset a full house. The visitors won three of their games to single figures. Port St Mary A won 4-2 on games at Onchan with Margaret Tasker winning to single figures. Two games went all the way with Kath Looney losing out 20-21 to Joyce Gardiner and Flo Kelly losing to Rita Callister by the same score. It was a local derby at Port Erin when Breagle, as the home team, lost out 2-4 on games with Joyce Henry and Steph Swift providing their two wins, Steph just coming through 21-20 against Mavis Franks. The other two matches of the morning were closer, both ending level on games. Nobles’ had an eight point advantage over Douglas with some very close games, Jo Oldam scring 19 against Pat Dacre while Sonja Lees took Patsy Rush all the way before going down 20-21. There were only 2 points in it when Villa entertained Ballaugh, the advantage going to the visitors.
Jean Kelly Quarter-finals
The quarter-finals of the Jean Kelly Team Handicap competition took place on Thursday 12 May. Peel travelled to Castletown, and lost 6-3 on games although one of their games was won to single figures courtesy of Joyce Kelly. The two other winners were Shirley Corrin and Philippa Taylor. In reply for the home side Hannah Drewett and Hilary Kermode both had good wins to single figures and with four other wins Castletown had the advantage 168-138 on points, which gave them a narrow win by 5 points when the handicaps kicked in.
Mooragh Park also got close when they travelled to South Ramsey. The home side had a 7-2 advantage on games, with Jenny Moore and Helen Caley winning to single figures. The two winners for the visitors were Helen Martin, to single figures, and Rosemary Quirk. Gill Morgan fought well to reach 19 against Nicola Kneale as did Vicky Lloyd West who lost out 20-21 to Moira Anderson. Taking the handicap into account Mooragh Park were just 8 points short of causing a major upset !
Port St Mary were determined that there would be no surprise result as they faced their fellow club members. With Chris Price being the only winner for Purt le Moirrey, and the home side winning three of their games to single figures, the handicap made little impact on the final scores.
Nobles won 6 of the 9 games when they travelled to Port Erin, with Rebecca Teare and Jayne Smith both winning to single figures. Despite a good win to single figures by Lynda Cadamy, the home side were always on the back foot, ending 25 points down before handicap, their 5 point advantage making little difference to the final result.
Ladies’ League Friday 13 May
Top scorers of the night in the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored ladies’ league on Friday 13 May were Purt le Moirrey, winning 6-3 on games against Onchan who were unfortunately a player short. There were some close games with Dee Lewis reaching 19 against Roma Ware while, for the home side, Debra Cooper reached the same score against Maureen Payne and Sandi Lowe went one better against Wendy McDowell. Another high scorer was Ballaugh, who also won 6 games, three of those wins being to single figures.The closest game of the match saw Brenda Bowyer just lose out 18-21 to Maureen Wright. Four of Port Erin’s players won to single figures in their 6-3 defeat of Marown, while Leah Vickers fought well to reach 18 against Shirley Whelan. Castletown won 5-4 on games against Port St Mary, but wins to single figures by Wendy Kennaugh and Jayne Kneen gave the visitors victory by the narrow margin of 6 points. Despite being gifted a game by Nobles’ Peel Sunset could only win a further three games. With three wins to single figures Nobles’ ended with an advantage of 9 points, although there were some close games along the way, Joyce Ogden reaching 19 against Shirley Corrin, while Kim Hargraves came through against Jean Quine by the same score. South Ramsey’s 4-5 deficit on games became a victory on points with Gill Dixon and Lyn Bolton winning to single figures, as did Brenda Williams for the opposition, and three of their players reaching 18 points.

Cu Plas Mes Doubles Competition

Also pictured is Clare Cooper of Nobles Bowling Club. £332 was raised for the Special Care Baby Unit at Nobles Hospital.
Isle of Man v Merseyside
Isle of Man County Squad 2015
The Isle of Man Senior Mens bowls team continued to make strides in the Senior County Championships, the highest level of the team game, with a very impressive showing against Merseyside.
In the match played over two simultaneous legs at both Onchan Park and the Unison Bowling Club in St Helens the Isle of Man showed why they now have a seat at the top table as they won the home leg and just missed out on the overall win by 22 points over 24 games with a final match score of Merseyside 438 Isle of Man 416.
It is important to compete at this level and the fact that the team won 11 of the 24 games shows they are able to do just that and if they continue improving it will not be long before they pick up their first overall win.
At home the match was tight from the off with the honours even in after eight games with four wins apiece. Neil Withers, Glynn Hargraves, Trevor Quayle and Peter Collister all winning and the rest of the team scoring well to keep themselves in contention. .
With only three games remaining it looked like a points victory on Manx soil may have eluded the team but it was a case of Kelly’s Heroes from then on as the back order of Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly, Phil Kelly and Colin Kelly all rallied delivering impressive results to edge the leg by five points scoring 221 points as opposed to Merseysides 216.
Overall Endsleigh Insuarance man of the match for the Onchan Fixture was Merseysides John Finch for an impressive 21-12 win over Isle of Man number 1 John Kennish, whilst the Gelling Man of The Match for the home side went to Dido Kelly for his very impressive 21-10 victory over Anthony Thompson.
At this level things are always difficult away from home especially as the green travelled to was alien to the entire team, and had a huge crown unlike anything they would have seen locally.
Despite not scoring a win in the first four games the Island scored well and there were some very gutsy performances to ensure they were always in with a shout. It was the middle order where the Island proved their strength in depth is growing winning three of the next four games with Paul Dunn, Aaron ‘Bob’ Clark and Matthew Quirk all winning.
The final four also played superbly well and added another win to the pile as Paul Kelly picked up his first victory at this level.
Paul Dunn picked up a well deserved Overall Endleigh Man of the Match award for a fantastic 21-9 victory over Isle of Man festival winner Terry Glover, whilst Paul Kelly pocketed the Gellings Man of the Match award for his strong 21-10 win over Steve Davies.
Overall it was a very impressive showing from the local side in only their second year competing at this level. Thanks go to main sponsors Paddy Power and new sponsors West Coast Fitness as without them the Island simply wouldn’t be able to compete in this competition.
Cu-Plas Ladies’ Doubles
Nobles Ladies Doubles Winners 2016
Jenny Moore & Fional Kennish being presented by Clare Cooper (right)There was an entry of 23 pairs for the Cu-Plas ladies’ doubles played on Nobles’ number 2 green on Sunday 8 May. After an iffy start weather-wise the sun showed its’ face and shadows could be seen on the green.!
The green was running well and some excellent bowling was on display.

Having missed out on a “Lyn and Paula “ v “Lin and Paula” final on Wednesday we now had them meeting in one of the two semi-finals.
Semi-finals: Jenny Moore and Fiona Kennish 21, Sylvia Kennaugh and Mary Alderson 14; Lyn Bolton and Paula Garrett 21, Lin Ruscoe and Paula Firth 18.
In the final Lyn and Paula made the better start taking a lead at 11-7.At this point Fiona and Jenny took the next 8 ends and held a 17-11 advantage. Lyn and Paula caught up to 15-17 after the next three ends, but taking three of the next four ends gave Fiona and Jenny the title 21- 17
During the afternoon an excellent raffle was organised by Rebecca Teare, and a sum of £332 was raised for SCBU ( Special care baby unit)..
The presentation was made by club Chairman, Clare Cooper, who thanked all who had taken part, all those who had helped in the smooth running of the afternoon, and those who had produced the refreshments. Thanks also went to those who had supported the raffle and raised such a magnificent amount.

C Tarleton Hodgson Ladies’ league Friday 6 May
With Elaine Moore being off island for the. Ladies’ Average Merit Classic in Shropshire, there were only five matches played in the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored ladies’ league on Friday 6 May. The match between South Ramsey and Purt le Moirrey will take place on Wednesday 25 May.
Ballaugh had little answer to the might of Port St Mary, having only two winners in Ann Gale and Christine MacDonald, while the reigning champions won six of their seven games to single figures. Port Erin also recorded just two wins when they visited Noble‘s, courtesy of Voirrey Curphey and Mavis Franks. They nearly added two more as Phil Dobson reached 19 against Joyce Ogden and Leah Vickers took Jayne Smith all the way before going down 20-21.It was 5-4 in games for Peel Sunset at Onchan, helped by the home side fielding eight players which also gave the westerners a fair points advantage. Marown went down 3-6 to Castletown but there were some very close games with Rosie Winckle and Pat Withers reaching 18 points and Shirley Whelan losing out 20-21 to Kath Kinley. The closest match of the night was at Douglas where the home side took the five games with Paula Garrett and Muriel Cain winning to single figures, as did Janet Monk and Martin for Mooragh Park.
