Point Deductions – Game 15
Please be aware that the following point deductions have been made to the league tables following game 15.
South Ramsey C have received a 4 point penalty for playing an ineligible player. Match result altered to a 7-3 (135-121) win for North Ramsey C
Ladies’ League Friday 18 July
Friday night was notable for the number of very one-sided matches the exception being at Noble’s Mixed where the home side won 5-4 on games and a margin of 11 points. Clare Cooper had a win to single figures while Sylvia Kennaugh just pipped Jean Thackrah 21-19.Castletown had the better of Peel Sunset 6-3 with four wins to single figures, while in reply Peel won two games to single figures. In contrast was the tussle between Sue Peach and Philippa Taylor with the Peel player coming through 21-20.Onchan were a player short against Douglas but with wins by Jo Smith and Dee Lewis together with Viv Rush reaching 20 against Kath King they managed a score of over 100.Jenny Maddrell was the lone winner for Ballaugh at Port St Mary who had four wins to single figures, South Ramsey scored a maximum against Marown with six of their players winning to single figures, while Purt le Moirrey faced up to moorage Park with only seven players. Tracey Moore was the only winner for the visitors, winning to single figures to keep the home side’s total down.
Ladies’ League Wednesday 16 July
Mooragh Park’s long journey south proved fruitful, on Wednesday 16 July in the C Tarleton Hodgson and Son Ltd sponsored league, as they dropped just 2 points to Port Erin with six wins to single figures, Phil Dobson being the lone winner for the home side. It was a similar story at Purt le Moirrey as Tracey Moore was their sole winner against Port St Mary who also had six wins to single figures. Douglas were unfortunately a player short on their trip to Peel who won 6-3 on games with two wins to single figures. Jean Quine had a close match with Harley Garrett, just losing out 20-21.Although Ballaugh had the better of South Ramsey 6-3 on games, wins to single figures by Elaine Moore and Lyn Bolton more than off-set Brenda Bowyer’s, keeping the home side’s advantage down to 8 points. Noble’s Mixed won 5-4 against Onchan with Rebecca Teare winning to single figures while Marown took four games off Castletown. However with three of their players winning to single figures the visitors had a comfortable points advantage.
Ladies’ Millennium Fours
On a miserable wet afternoon fourteen groups of four ladies gathered at the Villa on Saturday 19 July to contest the Millennium fours. Although unpleasant the weather was not as dreadful as had been forecast.
The format of each match had three games, a doubles and two singles, the organisers deciding by draw who in the team would play the doubles and singles. Each game was 15 up and the total chalks for each team decided the winner.
In the semi-finals Mooragh Park Faced Port Erin. With Janet Monk and Lilian Slinger being drawn together in the doubles the Port Erin pair of Jean Thackrah fought well to gain four points. Lynda Cadamy winning 15-7 against Rosemary Quirk meant the result depended on the singles between Di Benson and Mary Kinrade. Mary won 15-13 to take Mooragh Park through 37-32.
The other semi-final pitted a Douglas team (+ Lyn Bolton) against Noble’s Mixed (+ Win Collister).With Jan Osborne and Paula Garrett winning the doubles against Lin Ruscoe and Meg Williams 15-7, Lynne Mansley coming through 15-10 against Paula Firth and Win Collister going down 7-15 to Lyn Bolton, Douglas came through with the full 45 points against Noble’s Mixed’s 24.
In the final the singles were shared with Lyn Bolton winning 15-0 against a plucky, but tiring, Mary Kinrade while Rosemary Quirk won 15-6 against Paula Garrett. This meant that the Douglas pair of Jan Osborne and Lynne Mansley needed to score 10 points against Janet Monk and Lilian Slinger. A 15-12 win meant that the Douglas Team took the game, and the title, 36-27.
The presentation was made by Association president, Pat Robertson, who thanked the Douglas club for the use of their green and facilities, and all those who had helped with the smooth running of the afternoon.
Ladies’ over 60’s Tuesday 15 July
The closest match in the Trend sponsored over 60’s ladies’ league on Tuesday was at Villa where it ended level on games. A win to single figures by Muriel Cain gave the home side the advantage on points in a high-scoring encounter. There were no maximums recorded but Both Port St Mary A and Noble’s Mixed both dropped just 5 points. Port St Mary A won five games, four of them to single figures, against Port Erin, with Steph Swift being the lone winner for the visitors. Marown took two games off Noble’s Mixed, courtesy of Marcia Pearson and Shirley Whelan who edged out Sylvia Kennaugh 21-20, while Pat Robertson and Lin Ruscoe won their games to single figures. Ballaugh won 4-2 against Onchan B, although Dee Lewis nearly levelled the score on games reaching 20 against Mary Simmonds. Wins to single figures by Ann Gale and Brenda Bowyer gave the home side a comfortable win on points. It was a similar story at Mooragh Park where Maureen Payne and Lilian Slinger had single figure wins and Mary Moffatt and Joyce Kelly won their games for Peel Sunset. Once again Onchan A were unfortunately a player short to make the match all square on games. The five games played were closely contested with all of them going to double figures, giving both teams respectable totals.
Ladies’ over 60’s Thursday 10 July
Mooragh Park recorded their second maximum of the week to close the gap on Port St Mary A at the top of the table. Although they won all six games Marown didn’t let them have it all their own way with Shirley Whelan and Marcia Pearson reaching 19 against Maureen Payne and Mary Kinrade while Mary Alderson just lost out 20-21 to Viv Grills. Port St Mary A had to work hard for a win at Noble’s Mixed ending level on games with an advantage of 3 points. Sonja Lees and Margaret Tasker had a close encounter with Sonja coming through 21-20. Despite Brenda Hawkard’s win to single figures plus a win to Roma Ware Peel Sunset had a comfortable win at Port St Mary B with three of their players winning to single figures. Things were closer in the other three matches. Port Erin and Onchan A ended level on games but with all their players reaching double figures the home side had the advantage on points, while Onchan B also drew on games but had the better of Villa by a mere 3 points. Ballaugh won four games on their visit to Douglas, but with all the home players reaching double figures and Patsy Rush winning to single figures they had the better of the host side by a single point.
Ladies’ league Friday 11 July
There were only four matches played in the C tarleton Hodgson and Son Ltd sponsored league on Friday 11 July as Marown and South Ramsey each had a player away representing the island. The two missing matches will be played on Wednesday 30 July.
Douglas had the better of Noble’s Mixed 6-3 on games with Lynne Mansley winning to single figures for the home side as did Lin Ruscoe for the visitors. Other games were closer with three going to 19 and Rhona Argallon reaching 20 against Brenda Williams. The other three matches were very one sided with two sides being a player short. Onchan could only field eight players against Mooragh Park, but managed to win two games courtesy of Eileen Thomas and Viv Rush while Dee Lewis took Kim Hargraves all the way before going down 20-21 to take their score over the 100points mark. Castletown also benefited from their opponents being a player short. With four of ther players winning to single figures wins by Ann Gale and Jane Teare were not enough to take Ballaugh’s score into three figures. Port Erin also failed to reach three figures against Port St Mary who were in imperious form with four of their players winning to single figures. Sylvia Maddrell saved a whitewash for the visitors with a 21-19 win over Tricia Bull.
Match postponed from Friday 4 July
The match between Marown and Douglas postponed from 4 July and played on Thursday 10 July was a close encounter with the home side winning by 5 games to 4 and a margin of just 7 points. The feature game of the match saw Margaret Scarffe pipping Muriel Cain 21-20, while Marcia Pearson had a win to single figures.
Jean Kelly Final
The weather played its part and added to the occasion as Castletown and Peel Sunset met at Finch Hill on Thursday 10 July for the final of the Jean Kelly Memorial team handicap competition. It was also nice to see so many supporters and spectators gathered round the green.
On a very fast green it looked as the conditions were going to favour Castletown as they won the first two games to single figures courtesy of Kath Kinley and Ann Hollingworth. Anne Oates also won giving her team the first three games, and Peel then had it all to do as they were already 25 points behind even taking the handicap into account. Peel won the other two games on the first block leaving Castletown with a lead of 15 points. In the second round of games the Peel players adjusted better to the conditions winning all four matches taking the match 6-3 on games and by a margin of nine points.
Association president, Pat Robertson, thanked Moore Kelly and his family for their continued support of the event.
Moore then said a few words saying how much he had enjoyed the evening and thanking his friends and family for providing the very welcome buffet, and also Finch Hill for the use of their green and facilities before introducing his daughter, Christine Alexander, to make the presentations.
