Ladies’ League Wednesday 6 August
Wednesday 6 August saw the Ramsey “Derby Match” taking place in the C Tarleton Hodgson and Son Ltd sponsored ladies’ league. South Ramsey made the most of home advantage to win 5-4 on games, Gill Dixon nearly making it six games as she lost out 20-21 to Chris Price. Another close game saw Kellie Maddrell-Reeve reach 19 points against Jenny Moore. Purt le Moirrey won 6-3 at Ballaugh, but with the home players all reaching double figures, in particular Christine Macdonald just losing out 20-21 to Tracey Moore, and Mary Simmonds and Ann Gale winning to single figures, the home side took the match by six points. Peel had a convincing 7-2 victory over Onchan, Jo Smith and Eileen Thomas being the two winners for the visitors, while it was a similar story at Marown where Mavis Franks and Lynda Cadamy won for Port Erin. Castletown won 5 games against Noble’s Mixed, but with Hannah Kermode and Marie Ashurst winning to single figures they had a comfortable points advantage. Port St Mary won 6-3 against Douglas, with three players winning to single figures, the three winners for the visitors were Paula Garrett, Lynne Mansley and Wendy Cowin while Patsy Rush reached 20 against Tricia Bull.
Ladies’ over 60’s League Tuesday 5 August
Mooragh Park were top scorers in the Trend sponsored over 60’s league on Tuesday 5 August. Despite Douglas making it a draw on games, wins to single figures by Maureen Payne and Lilian Slinger together with Ellie Cowell reaching 20 against Kath King gave the home side a convincing points win. The other two winners for Douglas were Wendy Cowin and Jan Osborne.Marown were on good form on their visit to Port St Mary B, winning 5 games, Edwina Reid was the lone winner for the home side, although Dot Mylchreest almost added a second game reaching 20 against Celia Joughin. League leaders, Port St Mary A had a tough battle at Peel where the match ended level on games. Mary Moffatt and Kath Looney went all the way before Mary eventually came through 21-20 while Tricia Bull’s win to single figures helped the visitor’s to win by 9 points. Onchan B won 4-2 on games with Dee Lewis and Elisabeth Kassapian winning to single figures. The two winners for Port Erin were Kay Primrose-Smith and Mavis Franks who both also won to single figures. Ballaugh came out on top 4-2 on games at the Villa with Peggy Griffin and Jenny Maddrell winning to single figures while at Castletown visitors, Noble’s Mixed, had the advantage 4-2 on games, although Sue Peach came close to levelling the games score as she just lost out 20-21 to Sonja Lees.
Ladies’ over 60’s Thursday 31 July
Onchan A were top scorers on Thursday 31 July when they won a high-scoring match against Peel Sunset. which ended level on games, a good win to single figures by Flo Kelly giving them a comfortable points advantage. The two winners for Villa against Mooragh Park were Muriel Cain and Margaret Corlett while Kay McKiernan reached 19 against Mary Kinrade. A good win to single figures by Lilian Slinger meant the home side finished just short of the 100 point mark. Port St Mary A did not have it all their own way when they faced their B team, despite wins to single figures by Val Macfarlane and Margaret Tasker, wins by Brenda Hawkard and Edwina Reid kept the home side’s score down. Port Erin had a 4-2 advantage on games over Douglas with single figure wins by Jacqui Elliott and Jean Thackrah. Jan Osborne also won to single figures for the visitors while Kath King reached 19 against Audrey Gardner. Marown and Castletown ended level on games, but with two home players, Shirley Whelan and Mary Alderson, winning to single figures and Sue Peach being the only visitor to do so, Marown ended with a nine point advantage. It was very close at Noble’s Mixed with both teams taking three games. Lin Ruscoe and Sylvia Kennaugh won to single figures for the home side as did Viv Rush and Theresia Britten for Onchan B, but the home side ended with a one point deficit.
Ladies’ over 60’s Tuesday 29 July
Ballaugh’s visit to Peel in the Trend sponsored over 60’s league on Tuesday 29 July produced a rarity, a draw on both games and points. Wins to single figures by Jenny Maddrell for the visitors and Joyce Kelly and Mary Moffatt for the home side kept the scores low. Castletown went down 2-4 on games to Port St Mary A With all their players reaching double figures and Sue Peach winning to single figures they ended up just 5 points short of the league leaders. Mooragh Park fell just one point short of a maximum thanks to Voirrey Curphey edging out Ellie Cowell 21-20 while at Port St Mary B Chris Holland’s 21-19 win over Ann Watterson left Onchan A just two points away. Douglas had the better of Noble’s Park 4-2 on games, with Lynne Mansley winning to single figures while Marcia Pearson saved Marown’s blushes by winning her game at Onchan B thus denying the home side a full house.
Ladies’ League Friday 1 August
Second placed Mooragh park were top scorers in the C Tarleton Hodgson and Son Ltd ladies league on Friday 1 August, with only Shirley Whelan from Marown winning her game to deny them a full house. Leaders Port St Mary weren’t far behind winning seven games, five of them to single figures, although Peel did have two winners in Joyce Kelly and Pat Robertson. Castletown did not enjoy their journey north to meet South Ramsey where the home side won 6-3 on games. However there were some very close matches with Fiona Kennish’s 21-19 against Ann Hollingworth was matched by Kath Kinley’s win over Gill Dixon by the same score. The closest game of the match saw Jenny Moore edge out Hannah Kermode 21-20. Douglas with five wins, two to single figures, and every player reaching double figures, had a comfortable win on points against Port Erin while Purt le Moirrey with five wins, three to single figures, had a clear win over Onchan. The closest match of the night was at Noble’s Mixed, the home side winning 5-4 on games with a margin of 13 points.
Ladies’ Over 60’s League Thursday 24 July
Port St Mary took advantage of Mooragh Park’s no match day by recording a maximum, with three players winning to single figures, against Onchan B to extend their lead at the top of the table. Chris Holland denied Ballaugh.a full house, although all six games were close resulting in both teams passing 100 points, while Ann Hollingworth was the fly in the ointment for Onchan A who won 5 games against Castletown with Hazel Hughes winning to single figures. Douglas had a fruitful journey to Marown, taking 4 games with three of their players winning to single figures. The two winners for the home side were Marcia Pearson and Mary Black. Peel Sunset won 4-2 at the Villa with Cath Parker and Joyce Kelly winning to single figures while Pat Kelly and Kay McKiernan were the two home winners. Noble’s Mixed had a tough struggle against Port Erin, the match ending level on games. Although Lin Ruscoe won to single figures this was more than balanced by Gwen Tuck and Kay Primrose-Smith doing likewise, giving the visitors a 10 point advantage.
Ladies’ Over 60’s League Tuesday 22 July
Mooragh Park were able to make up ground on the league leaders dropping just two points at Noble’s Mixed, the home sides two winners being Lin Ruscoe and Sonja Lees who both won 21-20 against Maureen Payne and Rita Callan respectively. Leaders, Port St Mary A had a tough time on the Douglas green, ending level on games with a deficit of 10 points. Patsy Rush and Lynne Mansley won to single figures for the home side as did Val Macfarlane for the visitors. Shirley Whelan spoiled the party for Port Erin who won 5-1 on games with three of their players winning to single figures as did Shirley in reply for Marown. Onchan A had the better of their B side 5-1 on games with Marilyn Ellison being the lone winner for the home side while Castletown passed the 100 point mark against Ballaugh with a 4-2 win. It was close at Port St Mary Where the B team had a 4-2 advantage on games, but with Brenda Williams reaching 20 against Chris Holland and Muriel Cain winning to single figures, they came through by a mere 4 points.
Ladies’ League Friday 25 July
Things are getting tense at the top of the table with the two main contenders both recording scores in the 180’s. Shirley Whelan was Marown’s only winner against Port St Mary, although Lil Smith came close reaching 19 against Win Collister, the visitors winning eight games, four of them to single figures. Ballaugh won three tight games against Mooragh park, Brenda Bowyer and Christine Macdonald both won to 19 against Ellie Cowell and Jean Radcliffe respectively while Jenny Maddrell was taken all the way by Rosemary Quirk before coming through 21-20. Douglas had a tough time on their travels south, Castletown winning seven games, four of them to single figures, although the visitors did have two winners in Kay McKiernan and Wendy Cowin. It was a good night for Port Erin, assisted by Onchan being a player short, winning 7-2 on games with Voirrey Curphey and Kay Primrose-Smith both winning to single figures. Lynda Clarke and Viv Rush were the two winners for Onchan. Noble’s Mixed had a comfortable win at Purt le Moirrey, Tracey Moore and Amanda Lawler being the two winners for the home side, while things were much closer at Peel where Sunset lost 4-5 on games to South Ramsey and by a margin of just 9 points.
Noble’s Mixed Ladies’ Singles
The emphasis was on quality rather than quantity at Noble’s Mixed on Saturday 26 July as a disappointing field of 19 gathered to compete for the Jordan Cup. A warm, but cloudy, afternoon stayed dry until the end of the event, and with a true running green there were some excellent games.
Quarter-finals : Lilian Slinger 21, Mary Kinrade 11; Mary Alderson 21, Amanda Lawler 9; Janet Monk 21, Jo Smith 8; Paula Firth 21, Marilyn Ellison 17.
Semi-finals : Mary Alderson 21, Lilian Slinger 18; Janet Monk 21, Paula Firth 11
In the final Mary started brightly winning the first end, but Janet won the next end and having got hold off the jack she refused to relinquish it running out the winner 21-7.
Lin Ruscoe then introduced club chairman, Bob Briercliffe, to make the presentation.
Bob thanked the ladies for providing the refreshments and Vinty for doing the sheet, together with all those who had worked towards the smooth running of the afternoon.
Onchan Ladies’ Doubles
There was an entry of 18 pairs for the Onchan ladies’ doubles for the Commissioner’s Cup played on Noble’s 3 on Wednesday 23 July. On a very warm afternoon a fast green led to some interesting games played in a friendly spirit.
Semi-finals: Janet Monk and Lilian Slinger 21, Jo Smith and Libby Andrade 9; Chris Price and Rita Callan 21, Lyn and Casey Bolton 15.
The final was evenly contested at the beginning with Lilian and Janet leading 11-10 after eight ends. A four for Chris and Rita on the next end followed by a three two ends later swung the match in their favour, and they went on to claim the match 21-14.
Jo Smith thanked all those who had entered the competition, together with all who had helped with the refreshments, running the sheet and in any way contributing to the success of the afternoon.
She then introduced Derek Crellin, Chairman of the Onchan Commissioners, to make the presentations.
