Setback For South Ramsey A

In Ellan Vannin Fuels Division One South Ramsey A gave hope to the teams below them, following two below par results this week as despite winning both games they dropped seven points.

Monday nights result was a 3-7 away win over Peel B, with wins for the home team from David Proctor who beat James Teare 21-11, Dave Smith won 21-17 against Peter Collister and Dougie Allan was lying game down at 19-19 against Chas Grills and played a reaching bowl to save the game and count for one. On the last end Grills knocked his opponent in for game when counting one himself. All the wins for South were comfortable with David Bradford showing no ill effects from his recent absence to win 21-6 against Paul ‘Pooky’ Quirk, while Tony Dugdale was a more than capable stand in for Stefan Kelly as he won 21-9 against the ‘real’ Paul Quirk.

On Tuesday South caught up on the fixtures as they hosted Port St Mary A in their rearranged fixture. Ramsey had been only place on the Island that day to get hit with rain and heavy rain at that. This is not to take away from Port St Mary A as they performed well to take four points off the league leaders with Paul Russell winning 21-20 against James Teare with a great last bowl, Paul Skelly was lying game down at 18-20 and struck his opponents bowl off the green, then finished the game on the next end with a double to also win 21-20. Wayne Roberts won 21-18 against Chas Grills, while Tim Williams won a close game with Alan Moore 21-19. For the home team David Bradford recorded another single figure win as he beat Tom Collins 21-2, Peter Collister beat Dan McCabe 21-7, Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly was on his game as he beat Trevor Quayle 21-12, while Glynn Hargraves had to dig in to get over the line 21-18 against Robbie Cooil who came closest to securing a fifth win for Port.

Peel A kept themselves firmly in contention, were just two chalks off recording a 10-0 win, as they won 1-9 away to Noble’s A with Steve Cook beating Peel captain Gary Smith 21-19. Ste Kelly was the biggest winner on the night with his 21-2 win over Martyn Hobson, while his father Barney beat Dave Naughton 21-7. For Noble’s Sam Stannard-Duke came closest to picking up another point as he lost 17-21 to Tom Kelly.

Marown A continue to chase down the teams above them, they were ruthless with their 10-0 home win over Douglas A who were missing their top man Andy Cannell, while John Gelling made his return to the Marown team with a 21-12 win over Gordon Wynne-Smythe. The Crosby men recorded two single figure wins from Juan Killip and Paul Dunn who beat Keith Rise and Kevin Firth respectively. Shaun Seal was highest scorer for the Villa men as he was beaten 15-21 by Dean Kipling.

Onchan A beat Castletown A 7-3 at the Park with just three chalks separating the teams (132-129) as Dean Kinley won 21-1 against Mark Kelly, Bob Clark returned to the side with a 21-14 win over Matthew Quirk who suffered a second successive defeat, while Nathan Hamilton had a solid 21-12 win over Frank Watson. For Onchan Phil Kerruish just edged home 21-20 against Aaron Richardson, Kevin Quirk and Peter Slinger both won 21-12 against Nathan Cooil and Sam Clague respectively, whilst a battle of the Jordan’s was won by Cain as he beat Drewett 21-9, with Reginald Temporaza beating Ian Watson 21-13.

Ballaugh A survival hopes took a hit as they lost 2-8 away to North Ramsey A with Ballaugh’s Richard Hainge taking a brilliant 21-11 win against John Cannan, while team mate Philip Quayle wasn’t far behind with his 21-12 win over Steve Walmsley.

Marown B suffered their third straight defeat away to Port St Mary A as they lost 3-7. Winning for the visitors were Bobby Thorne who beat Dan McCabe 21-13, James Kelly who beat Paul Russell 21-19 and Karl Parker who won 21-16 against Tom Collins. Robbie Cooil was the Port men’s best winner as he won 21-9 against John Kelly, Paul Skelly was pushed hard as he beat Glenn Boland 21-19, while Wayne Roberts, Trevor Quayle and Tim Williams all won 21-10.

In Division Two just three fixtures took place this week as Port Erin A held onto top spot with a hard fought 6-4 home win over Onchan B in a high scoring game (151-141), while second placed Finch Hill A made up some ground with their 9-1 home win over their B Team as Stephen Oates prevented the whitewash with a 21-20 win over Kevin Anderson. Dave McCabe edged ahead in the overall individual merit courtesy of Tony Dugdale stepping into South Ramsey’s A Team.

Douglas B played host to Peel C with the home team taking a 6-4 win, with 11 chalks separating the teams (128-117) as Rob Matthews beat Paul Baker 21-9, with Bob Callow winning 21-4 against Kevin Mort. Mike Ashmole responded for the visitors with his 21-7 win over Andy Foster.

In Division Three Onchan C went top following their 2-8 away win over Port Erin B at Breagle Glen, thanks to three single figure wins from Jamie Clague, Sid McKnight and Lawrence McMullen, while Roger Payne received a walk over. Dennis Maxwell made sure of the extra point that took them to top spot with his 21-20 win over Ian Taylor.

Ballaugh B dropped four points at home to second from bottom Douglas D as they won 6-4, with John Bolton leading the way in the individual merit as he won 21-10 against David Cowley. Recording four impressive wins for the visitors were Nick Firth as he beat John Kneen 21-15, John Ferguson won 21-10 against Mike Buckeridge, while Juan Readshaw and David Caley both won 21-14 against John Looney and Fred Waggett respectively.

Third placed Ballaugh C had a tough time away to Peel D losing two games 20-21 with Peter Corlett and Mark Timsdale just falling short, while team mates Nigel Tebay and Richard Green both recorded impressive 21-8 wins for the visitors.

Noble’s B closed the gap on Castletown C to just five points with their 3-7 away win with Jay Elliott picking up his second win since taking the game up this season with a 21-12 victory over Dylan Marsh.

Rounding off the weeks’ fixtures Marown D took their own impressive 3-7 away win over Douglas C with captain Phil Dunn winning 21-11 over Les Quayle, while Alan Gault beat James Teare 21-8 as the Crosby men sit in a credible fifth place in their ever season.

PORT ST MARY WIN PLATE KNOCKOUT

Last Thursday evening Finch Hill Bowling Club hosted the final of the Ladies Plate knockout between Port St Mary and Ballaugh.  With the introduction of the new individual handicap system this season, Port were off +30 and Ballaugh +40.  First five games saw Chris Price, Chris Holland, Kellie Maddrell and Jayne Kneen for Port winning to 6, 15, 12 and 7 respectively against Michelle Cubbon, Elaine Fenton, Louise Tebay and Pat Mason with Alison Millard for Ballaugh winning to 19 against Nicci Cain.  With Port just ahead on points at the halfway stage, it was still all to play for.  Katie Williams (Port) played next taking on Julie Reilly.  Although Julie tried her best, Katie was on good form winning to 11.  Seventh and eighth games saw Trish Bull and Margie Tasker (Port) take on Barbara Graham and Christine McDonald.  All four ladies battled well, but Barbara and Christine just  had the edge winning to 12 and 15. Last game was between Mavis Franks (Port) and Cath Harvey with Mavis eventually winning 21-14.  It was a very good final with all the spectators enjoying some excellent bowling.  Result : Port St Mary 193 (6), Ballaugh 168 (3). Presentation was made by the Ladies President with PSM Captain Chris Price, thanking Finch Hill for the use of their green, all those who helped in any way, the spectators, but most of all to her ladies for playing so well.

In the Open Age League last Friday night current leaders  Castletown A were away to second placed Port St Mary A.  Match was much closer than on their previous encounter earlier in the season with Port winning on games but losing on points.  Closest games saw Nicola Cain and Trish Bull (Port) both winning to 19 against Hilary Kermode and Anne Oates with Kath Kinley (Castletown) being the only player to win to single figures.  Marown home to Port Erin and Onchan away to Peel both had good eight games to one wins with both teams only dropping one point.  Lone winners for Port Erin and Peel were Caroline Whitehead and Sue Jones.  South Ramsey had a good away win at Castletown B with Lorraine Moore (South) winning her first league game.   

There were four 5-1 results in the Ladies Over 60s matches on Tuesday morning.  Closest of these was the match between Finch Hill and Peel where Peel won by 29 points. All games went into double figures apart from the lone winner for Finch, Jan Osborne, who won comfortably to 5. Brenda Williams for Finch battled well against Val Allwood eventually losing to 15. 

CLOSE GAMES IN OPEN AGE LEAGUE

There were some close matches last Friday night in the Open Age League.  Marown B played Peel at home and although Peel won 5-4 on games they lost by 11 points.  Port Erin played host to Mooragh Park with Port winning the match by 12 points.   Mooragh Park junior, Lacey McMullan, won her first game to 18 against Rita Callister whilst Jenny Cain for Port came back from 16-8 down to win 21-17 against Lacey’s sister, Shannon.

In the Over 60s league on Tuesday morning, two full houses were achieved by Onchan A and Castletown A who were both home to Castletown B and Mooragh Park B respectively.  Closest match saw Marown winning at home by four points against Finch Hill. 

LADIES MILLENNIUM FOURS

The Ladies Association Millennium Fours knockout was held last Saturday afternoon attracting an entry of 8 teams of four with each match consisting of two single games and one doubles. Losing out in the semi-finals were the mixed team of Maureen Payne, Sue Gawne, Tracy Moore and Caroline Whitehead who lost to the Marown Team of Rebecca Teare, Deborah Leece, Clare Cooper and Helen Withers, with the Marown/South Ramsey team of Lynda Cadamy, Philippa Taylor, Joyce Ogden and Lyn Bolton losing to the South Ramsey/Mooragh Park team of Kim Hargraves, Jenny Moore, Shannon McMullan and Janet Monk.  In the final, Rebecca won the first of the singles games 15-10 against Shannon whilst Jenny for the South/Mooragh won the second singles 15-14 against Deborah.  It was all to play for in the doubles with Marown just ahead by 4 points.  Game was to and fro with the South/Mooragh pairing of Kim and Janet eventually overcoming Clare and Helen to win 15-13.  Although South/Mooragh team won on games, they lost the match by two points. Result : Marown 42 points, South/Mooragh 40 points.  Presentation was made by the Ladies President with Clare, on behalf of the Marown Team, thanking Nobles Bowling Club for hosting the competition, all their opponents and those involved for a great afternoon.

REBEKAH CROWNED JUNIOR LADY CHAMPION

On Saturday morning an entry of 12 girls took part in the Junior Lady Crown Green Bowling championship at Nobles Park Bowling Club. Competition was run as a round robin with the girls being split into two groups and games played 11 up off scratch.  All the girls played exceptionally well in the rounds with the winner of group one being Aailish Haworth (Mooragh Park) with 54 points and the winner of group two Rebekah Kelly (Marown) with 44 points.  In the final the two girls were evenly matched and on 11th end Aalish lead 9-7. Rebekah, with some good lead bowls, won the next three ends to win her well-deserved first junior championship 11-9.  The future for ladies bowling is certainly in good hands!  Presentation was made by the Ladies President who thanked all the junior ladies for taking part and treating the spectators to some excellent bowling.

Castletown A & South Ramsey through to Jean Kelly Final

Semi finals of the Jean Kelly knockout competition were played last Thursday.  First semi-final was between South Ramsey (+25) and Peel (+59).  South won six games to three and by six points.  Second semi between Castletown A (+19) and Marown A (+34) resulted Castletown winning five games to four and by 25 points.  In the plate knockout semis, Port Erin (+42) took on Ballaugh (+53). Match resulted in Ballaugh winning six games to three and by 29 points.  Second semi was between Onchan (+41) and Port St Mary A (+35).  Port won five games to four and by 12 points. Final of the Jean Kelly Knockout will be at Onchan on Friday 6 August with the final of the Plate being held on Thursday 22 July at Finch Hill. 

In the Open Age League last Friday night, Douglas and Mooragh Park both had good home wins against Castletown B and Onchan respectively.  Douglas won seven games to two and by 58 points. The two winners for Castletown were Jo Robert and Elaine McElroy who won to 16 and 17.  Mooragh won six games to three and by 46 points with five of Mooragh’s players winning to single figures. The closest games of the night saw Madison McMullan (Mooragh) beating Sue Gawne to 16 and Marilyn Ellison (Onchan) winning to 18 against Maureen Hamilton.

In the Over 60s league on Tuesday morning Port St Mary B won by one point at home to  South Ramsey.  All games went into double figures with Brenda Hawkard (Port) and Ann Gale (South) both winning to 18.  Second closest game saw Ballaugh winning by two points at home to Onchan A. Brenda Bowyer, Carol Holt and Maureen Trustham for Ballaugh plus  Paula Firth for Onchan all won to single figures.

The inaugural Over 60s Ladies Manx Championship took place at South Ramsey last Wednesday with an entry of 23 ladies.  The green was fast and tricky with some excellent bowling being played throughout the afternoon.  In the first semi-final, Elaine Moore (South Ramsey) played Joyce Ogden (Marown) with Elaine eventually winning 21-15.  In the second semi, Paula Firth (Onchan) played Margaret Tasker (Port St Mary) with Paula just having the edge winning to 12. Both ladies played well in the final and for most of the game it was very even, but with a final spurt  Elaine ran out to win 21-14. Presentation of trophy and prizes was made by Janet Latham, Ladies Treasurer, who thanked South Ramsey for hosting the competition and providing superb refreshments, and Gill Morgan, Ladies Competition Secretary for running the sheet.  Special thanks were given to Elaine for sponsoring the championship. 

CASTLETOWN A LEAD THE WAY

At the halfway stage of the ladies open age crown green bowling season, Castletown A are currently at the top just over 100 points ahead of  Port St Mary with Onchan closely behind in third place. Castletown’s lead was helped by a good home win against an improving Onchan with Tracy Moore (Castletown) being the only player to win to single figures. Port St Mary are keeping up the pressure courtesy of a 7-2 win at home to Douglas with Paula Garrett and Jan West being the two winners for Douglas. Match of the night was between Peel who took on Castletown B at home. Although Peel won five games to four, Castletown B took the match by 33 points. Barbara Young, Linda Dawson and Joy Stephens (Castletown) won to single figures with Lynda Wilson doing the same for Peel.

In the Over 60’s league on Thursday morning,  Port St Mary A, Onchan A and Peel had good home wins against Finch Hill, Port Erin and Port St Mary B respectively. Margaret Tasker and Chris Price (PSM A), Dee Lewis and Caroline Corlett (Onchan), Mary Moffatt (Peel) and Edwina Reid (PSM B) all won to single figures.  Marown had the best win of the morning getting a full house against Onchan B. The home derby between Mooragh A and B resulted in a 3-3 draw with the A team winning by 14 points. Castletown A travelled to Ramsey for their match against South Ramsey. The match finished 4-2 and by 19 points to South.

Therefore, at the halfway stage only five points separate the top three teams. Peel are currently in first place with 1607 points, second Castletown A 1603 and third Onchan 1602 points, so it is all to play for in the second half.  

Second round of the Over 60s JMS competition was played last Thursday morning.

SECOND MAXIMUM OF THE SEASON FOR PORT

Last Friday saw the second maximum of the season in the ladies open age league when Port St Mary beat their neighbours, Port Erin 189 to 66 with six of Port St Mary players winning to single figures.

The local derby between Mooragh Park and South Ramsey ended with South winning 6-3 and by 51 points. Aalish Haworth and Caroline Parker (Mooragh) had tough battles against Lauren Groen and Sue Collier with Aalish and Caroline eventually winning to 18 and 19 respectively. On Tuesday night, South Ramsey travelled to Castletown A for their rearranged game. Heike Perry, Tracy Moore and Hilary Kermode (Castletown) plus Jenny Moore and Fiona Kennish (South) all won their games to single figures.

Ladies Over 60’s

Marown were the only team to score a maximum on Tuesday in the Over 60’s league against Mooragh Park B. Best score for Mooragh was Anne Kean who lost to 11. Castletown A played Port St Mary B at home. The only winner for Port was Wyn Collister who won to 13 against Anne Oates.

LADIES ASSOCIATION TRIPLES: On Sunday 27th June, 13 pairs entered the Ladies Association Triples competition held at Ballaugh.  The weather was perfect for an excellent afternoon of bowling.

Getting through to the semi-finals were Gill Morgan, Sonya Mercer and Maureen Lacey against Elaine Moore, Gill Dixon and Elaine Fenton, with Jenny Moore, Fiona Kennish and Kim Hargraves playing Joyce Ogden, Philippa Taylor and Lynda Cadamy. In the first semi the trio of Moore, Dixon and Fenton won 21-6, with Moore, Kennish and Hargraves winning 21-18. In the final it was nip and tuck at the start, but then Moore, Kennish and Hargraves started to pull away eventually winning 21-15.

The Presentation was made by the Ladies Association President Sue Gawne. On behalf of Jenny, Kim and herself, Fiona thanked all their opponents, the Ladies competition committee for a well organised afternoon and Ballaugh for hosting.

Callow & Moore Win Corkhill & Callow Over 60’s Any Combination Doubles

South Ramsey Bowling Club hosted an Over 60’s any combination doubles competition sponsored by Corkhill and Callow Funeral Directors with 16 pairs taking part on a superb surface on a fine day.The competition was last played for in 2011 and was previously known as the Pro Tours Gold Cup.

The quarter finals had the husband and wife pairing of Steve & Judy Kelly (South Ramsey) lose out 17-21 to Peel pair Dougie Allan and Gordon Corrin, whilst Elaine Moore (South Ramsey) and Kevin Firth (Douglas) were defeated 18-21 by Marown duo Philippa Taylor and Lynda Cadamy. The home green pairing of Richie Davies and Bryan Corner were well beaten 10-21 by Chris Price (Port St Mary) and Les Brookes (Noble’s). Rounding off the quarter finals South Ramsey’s James Moore and Bill Callow ensured it was the end of the road for Derek Allen (Onchan) and Lee Dawson (South Ramsey) with a 21-16 win to take their place in the next round.

In the first semi-final the ladies Taylor and Cadamy coasted through their game against Peel pair of Allan and Corrin only losing three ends, winning 21-10 to reach the final. Joining them in the final was home pair Moore and Callow, who themselves only lost four ends winning 21-13 against Price and Brookes. 

The final was extremely well contested with Moore and Callow taking three singles on the first three ends to lead 8-5, only for a swift response from Taylor and Cadamy to win three consecutive ends, scoring a two, a four and a single to lead 12-8 after six ends. Moore and Callow stepped up a couple of gears to take the next six ends scoring 12 points on the way to lead 20-12. Taylor and Cadamy hit back with a three and a double to make the score 17-20, only for Moore and Callow to score the single chalk they needed to take the victory.

At the conclusion of the competition the presentation was made by competition secretary Kim Hargraves, who thanked Corkhill and Callow Funeral Directors for sponsoring the competition, the club members who helped with the running of the competition and the Ladies for the refreshments provided throughout the day. Tim Pressley from Corkhill and Callow was then introduced to present the prizes.

Close at the top

We are only two weeks away from the halfway stage in the Ladies open age bowling season and it could not be closer at the top. Currently Onchan are in top position, but with Castletown A and South Ramsey still to play their rearranged match on Thursday this may change. Onchan are certainly keeping up the pressure with a good away win at Port Erin last Friday night. Closest game of the match was a nip and tuck affair between Kay Primrose Smith (Port) and Marilyn Ellison with Marilyn winning to 20. Junior lady bowler Grace Gawne (Onchan) played very well with a good win to 13 against Pauline Worrall. Castletown B continue to grow with a good away win against Mooragh Park. Caroline Parker (Mooragh) and Joy Stephens had a tough game with Caroline eventually winning 21-17. Debra Cooper, Linda Dawson, Ann Hollingworth and Jo Roberts (Castletown B) won to single figures, as did Chris Sims and Janet Monk for Mooragh.

Last Thursday’s over 60’s matches produced two maximums of the morning. First maximum was achieved by Onchan A when they played their B team. Paula Firth and Dee Lewis (A) won to single figures with the two closest games being Sylvia Kennaugh (A) winning to 15 against Libby Andrade and Jean Quine (A) winning to 17 against Marilyn Ellison. Second maximum was by Port St Mary who won comfortably at home against Mooragh Park B. On Tuesday morning, the top two teams in the Over 60’s, Castletown A and Peel, played each other at Castletown. Although Peel played well, Castletown were on their ‘A’ game winning by four games to two, although it could have been five games as Hilary Kermode (Castletown) just lost out to 20 against Lynda Wilson.

British Merit Qualifier: There was an entry of 13 ladies for the British Merit Qualifier at Peel on Sunday. Getting through to the semi-finals were Jenny Moore (South) against Shannon McMullan (Mooragh) and Janet Monk (Mooragh) against Lil Smith (Marown). Jenny and Janet were on top form in the semis both winning to 4. The final could have gone either way with both ladies playing exceptionally well, but on the 28th end Jenny scored two to win 21-17. Jenny and Janet will both represent the IOM at the British Merit finals on Saturday 15 August at Heaton Park, Manchester.
