Philippa Shines In The Manx Bowls Festival
Marown A were on fine form in the ladies open age league last Friday night away to Castletown B, although the match finished six games to three for Marown they dropped only nine points. Closest game saw Linda Dawson for Castletown just crossing the line 21-20 against Philippa Taylor. Two other winners for Castletown were Charlotte Peach and Barbara Young. Onchan also had a good six games to three win at Ballaugh with Onchan’s Libbi Andrade, Sue Gawne, Marilyn Ellison and Jo Smith all winning to single figures. South Ramsey played host to Port Erin winning seven games to two with three of South’s games being won to single figures. Two winners for Port were Rita Callister and Jean Thackrah. Port St Mary had a tough game at home to Peel winning six three and by 18 points. Val Allwood nearly made it another win for Peel losing to 20 against Dot Mylchreest. Matches between Mooragh Park and Douglas, and Marown B against Castletown A were postponed due to junior bowlers representing the IOM in England.
Ladies Over 60’s
On Tuesday morning, only five of the six matches were played due to the deteriorating weather conditions. Of the remaining five matches two maximums were scored by Port St Mary A who were away to Castletown B and Onchan A home to Port Erin B. Mavis Franks for PSM A won her game to single figures with the closest game being between Wendy Kennaugh (PSM) and Elaine McElroy with Wendy crossing the line 21-18. Four of Onchan’s ladies won their games to single figures with Sue Wilshaw for Port Erin B getting to 13 against Lynda Clarke. Castletown A had a good 4-2 win away at Ballaugh with all games bar one going into double figures. Two winners for Ballaugh were Barbara Graham and Julie Reilly who both won 21-11. Finch Hill travelled to Mooragh Park A coming away with a 4-2 win and by 21 points with Janet Monk (Mooragh) and Brenda Williams (Finch) winning their games to single figures. Port Erin A played host to Onchan B with the home side winning 5-1. Lone winner for Onchan B was Libbi Andrade who won her game 21-13. Postponed match between Marown and South Ramsey to be rearranged.
On Sunday, the Ladies Association held the Dorothy Piearce Ladies Doubles BCGBA qualifier at Finch Hill with the winners representing the IOM on Saturday 13th August at Fox Lane Sports and Social Club, Leyland, Preston. The competition attracted an entry of seven pairs. At the semi-final stage, sisters Rebecca Teare and Debbie Leece (Marown) beat Fiona Kennish and Kim Hargraves (South Ramsey) 21-13 with Elaine Moore and Gill Morgan (South Ramsey) winning 21-9 against Philippa Taylor and Joyce Ogden (Marown). In the final, although Gill and Elaine tried hard, Rebecca and Debbie were in devasting form playing some excellent bowls for a well deserved 21-10 win. Gill Morgan, Ladies Association Competition Secretary, thanked those who took part, Finch Hill for the use of their green and providing refreshments and wish Rebecca and Debbie all the best for when they play across in August.
Many congratulations to Philippa Taylor (Marown) for being the furthest manx lady in last week’s Bowling Festival reaching the last 8. Also to Joyce Ogden (Marown) and Paula Firth (Onchan) for reaching the last 16.
Jenny Moore Wins Ladies Pre-Festival
In the Over 60’s ladies league last Thursday morning, Castletown A and Finch Hill both scored maximums against Port St Mary B and Castletown B. Highest losers for Port St Mary B and Castletown B were Pauline Worrall scoring 11 against Hilary Kermode and Linda Dobinson who lost to 19 to Brenda Williams. Onchan A had a good five games to one away win at Mooragh Park B dropping only six points. Lone winner for Mooragh B was Peggy Freeman. Marown ladies were away to Peel coming away with a four games to two win, but this could have been five-one as Rosemary Winckle just lost out to 20 against Mary Moffatt. South Ramsey played host to Port Erin A winning the match four-two with Dawn Finlay making her first debut appearance for Port. Mooragh Park A visited Onchan B. Match finished three all, but Mooragh won overall by 13 points helped by Janet Monk winning her game to single figures. Following morning Port St Mary A took on Ballaugh at home winning five games to one with the lone winner for Ballaugh being Barbara Graham.
In the Open Age League, all matches were won by the home sides with all bar one match being won five games to four. Spoiling the pattern was Castletown A who had an impressive eight games to one win at home against South Ramsey although it could have been six-three as Gill Morgan and Elaine Moore both lost to 20 against sisters Tracy Moore and Amanda Lawler. Lone winner for South was Fiona Kennish who won to single figures. Closest of the remaining matches saw Marown A winning at home by five points against Onchan. Two highest scoring games saw Lynda Cadamy for Marown winning to 14, as did Grace Gawne for Onchan. Although Ballaugh won five games to four at home against Marown they won by 45 points. Closest games saw Helen Withers and Deborah Leece (Marown) both winning to 20 against Elaine Fenton and Cath Harvey. Mooragh Park won their game at home against Port St Mary by 13 points Madison McMullan (Mooragh) just pipping Kellie Maddrell to 20. Port Erin won by 31 points against Douglas with Caroline Whitehead, Voirrey Curphey and Pauline Worrall for Port all winning to single figures as did Sue McCourt for Douglas. Peel took on Castletown B at home winning by 20 points with Charlotte Clarke (Peel) and Aalish Moore (Castletown) being the highest winners for their teams.
On Sunday the Ladies Association Pre Festival competition was held at South Ramsey Bowling Club. The competition attracted a small entry of 26 ladies, including visiting bowlers and was sponsored by Andy and Gill Morgan.
Getting through to the final was Jenny Moore from South Ramsey, who beat Sally King from Wrockwadine Wood 21-18, and Lorraine Hirst from New Mill Bowling Club who beat Rita Manning from Browmoor Park 21-20.
The final was extremely well contested with both ladies playing exceptional lead bowls. With a little flourish at the end, Jenny ran out to win 21-16. The presentation of the trophy and prizes was made by Gill Morgan, sponsor and Ladies Association Competition Secretary, who thanked those for taking part, South ladies for providing excellent refreshments throughout the day, but most of all to everyone for a great afternoon of bowling and camaraderie.
Castletown Ladies Doubles

Photo: Tracy MooreOn Saturday 18th June Castletown Bowling Club held their ladies doubles competition. With a new trophy to be won the format was changed to make it a more inclusive event.
With 17 pairs entered four groups were formed and they played round robins, with the winners of each group going on to compete in the semi-finals and final.
Group 1 saw Paula Gamon and Kellie Maddrell triumph over some strong competition. Group 2 winners were Margaret Tasker and Trish Bull. Group 3 Caroline Whitehead and Paula Firth won all their games to pip homegreeners by 1 point to progress. Group 4 winners, with the best overall score were Sue Gawne and Lynda Cadamy.
In the semi-finals Group 1 and 4 winners had a close game with Paula Gamon and Kellie Maddrell winning by one point on the last end, 8-7. Group 2 and 3 winners also had a close game with Caroline Whitehead and Paula Firth taking the game 10-8.
In the final the battle of the Paula’s began with Paula Firth leading so well it was very difficult to beat with Caroline Whitehead and Firth the overall winners 14-2.
The presentation was made by Kathryn Kinley, competition secretary, who thanked all who helped make the day the success it was intended to be.
Top Teams Progress to Rayner Shield Semi-Finals

Photo: Arnie WithersFollowing the break over T.T. fortnight it was back to bowls with the Rayner Shield quarter finals taking place on Monday and Tuesday evening.
Peel A had a tricky looking tie away to second division league leaders South Ramsey B, with the home team putting in a good performance to draw 4-4 on the night, however the chalks went comfortably in favour of the visitors who won by 17 chalks (118-135). For the home team Tony Dugdale was the best winner as he beat Alec Taylor 21-9, Alan Moore won 21-14 against Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly, Ben Dugdale performed well to beat Dean Kinley 21-13, with Steven Waters winning 21-15 against Peter Greenlees. Two big wins for the visitors ensured a draw on games was enough to progress to the next round with Gary Smith winning 21-6 against Austin Hart, while Tommy McMeiken won 21-5 against Eddie Carlyle. Tom Kelly went on a run to win 21-11 against Chas Grills, while George Gadsby won 21-12 against Sid Bolton.
Douglas A welcomed Marown A to the Villa with the visitors’ favourites to progress, they managed to take home a 3-5 win with Dean Kipling having to battle for his 21-17 win, while Neil Withers was the best winner with a 21-7 win over Alistair Lothian. For the Crosby men Stuart Garrett and Andy Cannell won 21-12 against Harry Barton and Sam Clague respectively, while Jimmy Sansom crept home 21-20 against Paul Kelly.
The final game of Monday evening had Port St Mary A reaching the semi-finals courtesy of a 5-3 win over Marown C, with two 21-20 scores going in their favour being the difference, as Tom Collins seen off Dan Smith, with Nathan Hamilton sealing the victory with his win over Walter McCarthy.
On Tuesday evening South Ramsey A made home advantage count with a 7-1 win over Marown B, with the visitors having several regulars missing. Kevin Kelly was the lone winner with his 21-18 win over Bill Callow, with Kelly recovering from a 12-18 deficit to run out on his opponent. Stuey Clague was next closest to picking up a second win for the visitors before losing out 21-17 to Peter Collister. For the home team David Bradford and Dido Kelly were the best winners as they won to single figures.
Rayner Plate
Third Division Marown D marched into the semi-finals of the Rayner Plate following a victory by just three chalks (171-174) over second division Outfit Peel C at their temporary home – Noble’s Two green. Despite the Crosby men losing 2-6, two single figure wins from Alan Gault who beat Paul Baker 21-9 and captain Steven Rough who led from the front with his 21-6 win over Jeff Wilson the handicap was enough to claim the victory.
Noble’s A had their second visit in succession to Breagle Glen after getting through a close game by just four chalks against Port Erin A (159-163) the previous week they repeated the trick at the same green as they crept into the next round (180-184) despite losing 3-5 on games they managed to progress into the next round.
Third Division team Noble’s B (+40) welcomed Rayner Plate favourites Division One side North Ramsey A (+15) who had to claw back a 25 deficit on the handicap, which they did in style thanks to three single figure wins. Paul Allison set the tone for the evening with his 21-1 win over Ciaran Broad, Adrian Skinner wasn’t too shabby with his 21-3 victory over Barry Salmon and Allan Callow just kept it to single figures with his 21-9 win over Terry Bates. Whilst Noble’s lost out by 29 chalks (146-175) they did impress as they took three games off a first division team with Phil Salmon beating Tony Smart 21-17, Stephen Corkill won 21-19 against John Cannan, while Grahem Moore did likewise against Brian Colquitt.
Despite a 45 chalk head start Peel D (+65) were beaten convincingly by Finch Hill A (+20) by 21 chalks with the total chalks 165-186. The lone winner for the Peel men was Andrew Cover who beat Paddy Murphy 21-19. Single figure wins from Tony Epifani (21-7) and Les Brookes (21-2) helped their cause as did two 21-11 wins from Paul Dougherty and Dave McCabe as these four results alone more than recovered the handicap, with their other two wins ensuring they reached the next round.
Division One League Action
League Action resumed on Wednesday in Canada Life International Division One as we reached the half way point in the league South Ramsey A hosted Castletown A with the home team winning 9-1. Mark Moorley prevented the whitewash for Town as he beat Stefan Kelly 21-16 after recovering from a 1-8 deficit. Next closest to winning for the visitors was George Foy who performed well, as he led 16-15 only to lose 21-16 to Glynn Hargraves. For the home team, Dido Kelly and David Bradford for the second time this week won to single figures. South Ramsey A top the pile ahead of Marown A by a single point with all to play for in the second half of the season.
Marown A matched the league leaders to stay firmly in the hunt as they also won 9-1, seeing off visitors Port Erin A at Crosby with five players winning to single figures they kept the Breagle Glen men down to just 78 chalks. Winning for the visitors Steve Durcan had a comfortable 21-14 win over Sam Clague.
Peel A hosted Onchan A at their temporary home Nobles Two green, however the visitors won 2-8 despite being a man short, with Peter Greenlees the lucky recipient of the walkover. Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly was ruthless with his 21-5 win over Phil Kerruish. For Onchan Neil Dunwell got over the line 21-20 against George Gadsby, Matthew Quirk beat Tommy McMeiken 21-19. Winning big were Mike Thomas with a 21-5 win over Gary Smith, while Reg Temporaza beat Dean Kinley 21-8. Will Penhallurick claimed another scalp as he beat Tom Kelly 21-15, while Peter Slinger won 21-11 against Dave Smith.
North Ramsey A welcomed Douglas A to Mooragh Park with the home team claiming a 7-3 win. Paul Allison picked up another win as he won 21-5 against Alistair Lothian, while Allan Callow impressed with his 21-16 win over Andy Cannell. Winning for the visitors were Villa captain Merv Sayle with a 21-10 win over John Piekalns, Keith Rise prevailed 21-14 against Gary Merrill, while Gary Conwell returned to the A Team with a 21-19 win over Paul Cannan.
Port St Mary A made the most of Marown B missing some key players as they recorded an impressive 8-2 home win at Breagle Glen. Jordan Drewett continued his recent renaissance as he won 21-18 against Brian Kelly, Paul Skelly impressed with a 21-17 win over John Gelling, while Trevor Quayle was the best winner on the night with a 21-3 victory over Dan Smith. The two wins for the visitors were close with Darren Kerruish beating Tim Williams 21-18, while Walter McCarthy had to dig deep for his 21-19 win.
Rounding off the action in Division One were Onchan B and Peel B who played at the Park, with the home team suffering a defeat on games 3-5, however they won the aggregate comfortably by 15 chalks to pick up the bonus two points to snatch a 5-5 draw thanks to two 21-6 wins from Colin Spence and Mark Kelly over Michael Kavanagh and Gordon Corrin respectively, while Mike Alexander beat Paul Quirk 21-10. For Peel David Proctor was the best winner as he beat Bernie McPhee 21-13, while Andy Mackie had to dig deep for his 21-19 win over Frank Watson.
Seven-two Scoreline Order of the Night
In the ladies open age crown green bowling last Friday night, three of the six fixtures were won 7-2 on games; these being Castletown A and Ballaugh at home to Port St Mary and Douglas, plus Marown A away to Mooragh Park. Marown had five ladies winning to single figures, Castletown had four and Ballaugh three. The closest games saw Kim Foy (Castletown) and Pat Mason (Ballaugh) winning to 20, with Janet Monk (Mooragh) winning to 19. Elsewhere Onchan had a good 6-3 away win at Peel with Caroline Corlett (Onchan) just pipping Cath Parker 21-20. South Ramsey visited Marown B coming away with a hard earned five games to four win and by 15 points with Kim Hargraves (South) having a nip and tuck battle with Lisa Oliver eventually winning to 15. Port Erin hosted Castletown B with Ann Hollingworth and Joy Stephens (Castletown B) winning to 18 and 17 against Jean Thackrah and Alison Stockham respectively.
In the ladies Over 60’s league last Tuesday morning, home derby between the Mooragh Park ladies resulted in a five games to one win for the A team with the lone winner for the B team being Peggy Freeman who won to 18 against Margaret Oxley. Castletown A were away to Port Erin A coming away with a five one win and dropping only one point. Stopping a full house was Jacqui Elliot who won to 20 against Joy Stephens. Two more matches that saw a five games to one win were South Ramsey and Port Erin B both away to Onchan B and Castletown B respectively with the lone winners being Libbi Andrade for Onchan and Linda Dobinson for Castletown. Marown hosted Ballaugh winning four games to two with three of the Crosby ladies winning to single figures. Peel visited Finch Hill and although the match finished three all, Peel won by four points with all games bar one going into double figures. The following morning Port St Mary A entertained Onchan A at home. The match finished three all with Onchan winning by 14 points. Mooragh Park A visited Port Erin B coming away with a four games to two win with the two winners for Port Erin B being Rita Callister and Alison Stockham. South Ramsey hosted Finch Hill and although the match finished three all, South won by 20 points. The next day, Onchan A travelled to Port St Mary B coming away with another full house due to PSM B only able to field three players. Of the three games that took place the closest saw Caroline Corlett (Onchan) winning to 18 against Dot Mylchreest.

Junior Lady Bowlers shine
In the ladies crown green open age league last Friday night, junior lady bowlers proved they are a force to be reckoned with. Four of Mooragh Park’s junior lady bowlers won their games helping their team to a 7-2 win at home against Onchan with two of the juniors winning to single figures. Closest games of the match saw Janet Monk and Caroline Parker for Mooragh both winning to 16. Marown B played host to Onchan with two of their junior ladies, Emily Cooper and Rebekah Kelly, winning to 17 and 13 against Chris Holland and Kellie Maddrell. Ballaugh had a good home win dropping only six points against Castletown B with Sonja Mercer stopping Ballaugh getting a full house when she won to 15 against Lola Tebay. Peel ladies travelled to Port Erin coming away with a five games to four win, but just losing out on points. Best game of the match was between Caroline Whitehead (Port) and Mary Moffatt with the former winning to 19. Unfortunately at time of report no result received for the match between Castletown A and Marown A, with the match between South Ramsey and Douglas being postponed to a later date.

On Wednesday morning, Port St Mary A played Marown A at home. Marown won by five points in a three all match, with three of the games being won to single figures. Last Thursday morning, Onchan A recorded their fifth maximum of the season at home against Port Erin A with Sylvia Kennaugh and Caroline Corlett winning to single figures. Castletown A and Ballaugh both won 5-1 at home to Finch Hill and Castletown B respectively with all games, bar one, in both matches going into double figures. Peel hosted Port St Mary A in a closely fought three all match. Game of the match saw Shirley Corrin (Peel) just edging it 21-20 against Mavis Franks. Onchan B travelled to Mooragh Park B coming away winning four games to win and by seven points with Jane Robinson (Onchan) winning to 19 against Irene Goodall. Port Erin B were at home to South Ramsey and although being two players short, Rita Calllister and Wyn Collister (PE B) won two of the remaining four games to 17 and 12 respectively. The following morning Port St Mary B hosted Mooragh Park A. Mooragh won five games to one with Edwina Reid being the lone winner for PSM B.
Last Saturday, Elaine Moore from South Ramsey, represented the Isle of Man in the British Crown Green Ladies 2022 County Average Winners Classic held at Poynton Sports Club, Stockport. Elaine won her first game against Sylvia Bradbury from Cheshire 21-8, but unfortunately lost her second to Sharon Masters from North Midlands 21-17. Overall winner, who shone throughout the day playing exceptionally well, was Louise Ollerton from Greater Manchester.
Castletown ‘A’ Ladies Lead The Way
Castletown A were in good form away to Peel in the Ladies Open Age league last Friday night winning seven of the nine games and by 41 points. All games went into double figures with Kim Foy for Castletown and Louise Horsfall for Peel both winning to 17. South Ramsey also had a good away win at Port St Mary with Trish Bull for PSM just pipping Lauren Groen 21-20. Onchan played host to Douglas winning seven games and by 64 points. Again all games bar one went into double figures with Graiagh Smith for Douglas crossing the line 21-17 against Grace Gawne. Mooragh Park were home to Port Erin winning the match by 74 points with four home-greeners winning to single figures. Marown A took on Ballaugh at home. Closest games of the match saw Shirley Whelan and Lil Smith (Marown) both winning 21-20 against Elaine Fenton and Cath Harvey. Marown B travelled to Castletown B with Marown’s junior lady bowler, Grace Cooper, just losing to 20 against Pat Rigby.

Onchan A and Castletown A both won away to Finch Hill and Peel respectively with Lynda Clarke (Onchan) and Joy Stephens (Castletown) winning their games to single figures. Marown ladies travelled to Mooragh Park A coming away with a three all match, but losing by seven points. South Ramsey were at home to Ballaugh. South lost four games to two but won the match by 14 points. Mooragh Park B travelled to Port Erin B, the match finished five games to one for PE with Ann Kean being the lone winner for the northerners. The following morning Port St Mary A played host to Port Erin A. This was a tough battle with PSM A winning the match by one point. Game of the match was between Wendy Kennaugh (PSM) and Voirrey Curphey with Voirrey getting the point needed to win 21-20.
Last Thursday morning’s matches saw Peel and Onchan A getting full houses at home against Mooragh Park B and Castletown B with four of the six games in both matches being won to single figures. Ballaugh had a good home win against Onchan B winning five games to one with Libbi Andrade being the lone winner for Onchan. Port Erin B played host to Port St Mary A. Unfortunately PE could only field three players which resulted in a five games to one win for PSM. South Ramsey travelled to Castletown for their match against the ‘A’ team. This was a close match with Castletown winning four games to two and by five points. On Friday morning, Port St Mary B played host to Finch Hill. Despite Finch only having four players, match finished three all on games with PSM B winning by 16 points.
Quarter finals of the Jean Kelly knockout competition was played last Thursday. Results: Castletown A (+24) 207, Onchan (+43) 164; Marown B (+62) 160, South Ramsey (+39) 207; Mooragh Park (+46) 220, Castletown B (+55) 203; Port St Mary (+30) 150, Marown A (+42) 202. Draw for semi-final on Thursday 30th June: South Ramsey versus Mooragh Park; Castletown A versus Marown A.
Ladies Association Doubles competition was held at Mooragh Park on Sunday attracting an entry of 14 pairs. Getting through to the final were Jenny Moore and Fiona Kennish against Helen Withers and Lyn Bolton. Jenny and Fiona had the stronger start leading 16-8 on 8th end which proved too much of a lead for Helen and Lyn to come back from with Jenny and Fiona running out 21-10. All four ladies played exceptionally well throughout the competition with the final result not reflecting the quality of play. Presentation was made by Gill Morgan, Competition Secretary, who thanked Mooragh Park for the use of their green, their ladies for providing the refreshments and to all who had entered.

The quarter finals stage saw the Douglas pairing of Pauline Cowley & Jane Lothian struggle to find their length scoring three singles before bowing out to the South Ramsey duo of Sue Collier & Judy Kelly. A four on the seventh end gave homegreeners Caroline Corlett & Lynda Clarke brief hope before losing out to Marown ladies Philippa Taylor & Joyce Ogden. Lynda Cadamy (Marown) & Sue Gawne (Onchan) beat off the challenge of Libby Andrade (Onchan) & Dee Lewis (Onchan) 21-19 over 24 ends. At 19-15, the Peel combination of Lynda Wilson & Shirley Corrin looked to have done enough to book a semi-final place. However, a three and three singles saw them thwarted by Sue McCourt & Sandra May of Onchan.
Cadamy & Gawne hit the ground running in their semi-final as they went 18-4 up against Taylor & Ogden. A brief recovery by the latter allowed them to reach 11 before succumbing. In the other semi-final Collier & Kelly proved too strong for McCourt & May. They did, however, stutter at ‘all but’ allowing their opponents to reach 16 before crossing the line.
The final was a close affair at the halfway stage (11-9) but, experience told in the end with Cadamy & Gawne running out with a 21-10 victory. The experience will stand the South Ramsey team in good stead for the future.
Onchan’s Club President presented the Cup along with souvenir silver plates from the Commissioners. Thanks were given to all those involved in an enjoyable afternoon & especially to the Greenkeeper for the Green condition & to the ladies for the refreshments.
Maximums again in Ladies Over 60s
In the ladies Over 60s league last Tuesday morning, Castletown A scored a maximum away to Mooragh Park B with all games bar one being won to single figures. Peel won five games to one at home against Port St Mary B with the lone winner for PSM B being Lesley Corker winning to 17. Port Erin A put in a strong performance away to Castletown B winning five games with Rita Callister and Steph Swift (PE) both winning to single figures. The following day, Port St Mary A hosted Mooragh Park A. Although Mooragh won four games to two, Port won the match by 11 points helped by Mavis Franks and Wendy Kennaugh (PSM) both winning to single figures. Last Thursday morning saw Onchan A record a maximum against their B team with Lynda Clarke and Dee Lewis (A) both winning to single figures. Port St Mary A also scored a maximum away to Mooragh Park B with the closest game being between Margaret Oxley (MP) against Wendy Kennaugh with the latter winning to 14. Ballaugh were at home to Peel winning four game to two and by 13 points. Closest game saw Brenda Bowyer (Ballaugh) just crossing the line to win 21-20 against Mary Moffatt, Marown A also had a four-two win at home against Castletown B with Lynda Cadamy, Joyce Ogden and Mia Moore all winning to single figures for Marown. Port St Mary B played host to South Ramsey on Friday morning with the South ladies getting a full house. Closest games being Ann Gale and Moira Anderson (South) winning to 18 and 16 against Edwina Reid and Lesley Coker respectively.
Ladies Open Age: Castletown A and South Ramsey ladies had good home wins last Wednesday night in the ladies open age league against Mooragh Park and Castletown B. Sisters Madison and Shannon McMullan both played well winning to 18 and 19 respectively for Mooragh with Alison Kearsley, Tracy Moore and Hannah Drewett all winning to single figures for Castletown. In the South v Castletown B match, best game of the night was between Sue Collier (South) and Linda Dobinson. Both ladies played exceptionally well with Sue just getting the point needed to win 21-20. Ballaugh won their third match away to Peel by five games to four with Barbara Graham, Maria Dinsdale and Christine McDonald for Ballaugh all winning to single figures. Home derby between Marown B and Marown A resulted in a win for the A ladies by six games to three. Closest game was between Emily Cooper (B) and Philippa Taylor with the latter eventually winning to 18. Onchan were in strong form away to Port Erin winning seven games to two and by 60 points. Douglas hosted Port St Mary with five of the nine games being won to single figures. Best game of the match was Michelle Cowley (Douglas) just losing to 18 against Chris Holland.
The Ladies Association Triples competition took place on Saturday at Marown attracting an entry of nine triples. Getting through to the final were Margie Tasker, Trish Bull and Mavis Franks (Port St Mary) against the Marown trio of Lil Smith, Jayne Smith and Rosie Winckle. The PSM ladies got off to a very strong start to lead 20-7 on the 11th end. Not ones for giving up, the Marown ladies pulled the deficit back to 16-20 courtesy of two fours and a single but it was a little too late with the Port ladies scoring the point they needed on the next end for a well deserved win. The presentation was made by Gill Morgan (Ladies Association Competition Secretary) who thanked Marown for hosting the event and providing excellent refreshments throughout the afternoon and to all who had entered.
British Ladies Crown Green Club Championship: Last year’s Open Age winners Castletown A, travelled last weekend to the 2022 British Crown Green Ladies Club Championships held in Whitchurch, Shropshire. Championship was played in groups of four in a round robin format with the Castletown ladies playing their games on the smaller of the two adjacent greens. In the first game they came up against Pensby, but despite winning five of the eight games they lost 89-97 on chalks with the winners for Castletown being Hilary Kermode, Alison Kearsley, Kim Foy, Kath Kinley and Anne Oates. In their second game they played Wharton Cons and this proved a much tougher affair with only Hannah Drewett and Stella Watterson triumphing in a loss of 81-101. Unfortunately this meant the Castletown ladies did not progress any further but must be congratulated on their overall performance.
Another maximum for Onchan A ladies in Over 60s league
Onchan A Over 60s ladies were again in fine form last Tuesday morning scoring another maximum away to Port Erin B. Three of the six games were won to single figures with the closest game being Gwen Tuck (PE) against Paula Firth with the latter winning to 18. Port Erin A also scored a maximum away to Onchan B with Caroline Whitehead (PE) just pipping Libbi Andrade to win 21-20. Closest match of the morning was Finch Hill home against Mooragh Park A. Although Finch Hill took five off the six games, they won by only 15 points. On Wednesday morning, Port St Mary A hosted Castletown B winning five games to one dropping only three points. On Thursday morning, another two maximums were scored, this time by Ballaugh and Castletown A. Ballaugh were at home to Mooragh Park B with the closest game being Elizabeth Morrison (Ballaugh) winning to15 against Irene Goodall. Castletown A were in excellent form at home against Port St Mary A. Castletown won two games to single figures with Anne Hollingworth just crossing the line for Castletown winning to 19 against Mavis Franks. Its not very often there is a match that finishes three all in games and equal on points, but this happened when Onchan A hosted Peel with all games going into double figures. On Friday morning, Port St Mary B were at home to Port Erin B. Four of the six games were won to single figures with Steph Swift for PE just edging it 21-18 against Elaine Hawkins.
In the Open Age League on Wednesday evening last week, Castletown A had a tough battle away to Port Erin. Castletown won five games to four and by only two points. Linda Dawson and Tracy Moore (Castletown) both won 21-20 against Jean Thackrah and Rita Callister respectively, as did Jacqui Elliot for Port against Kim Foy. Another match which finished all square on points was Marown at home to South Ramsey. Marown won five games to four with Kim Hargraves and Elaine Moore for South, plus Joyce Ogden for Marown all winning to single figures. Castletown B also had a good home result against Douglas with Rachel Palmer (Castletown) just winning 21-20 against Jane Lothian.
Preliminary round of the Jean Kelly Knockout competition was held last Thursday evening. Mooragh Park, Marown A and B, and Castletown A, all won their matches. Therefore, quarter final line-up on Thursday 28 April is : Mooragh Park v Castletown B; Port St Mary v Marown A; Castletown A v Onchan, and Marown B v South Ramsey.
