Jean Kelly Memorial Team Handicap Semi-finals

The semi-finals of the Jean Kelly team handicap took place on Thursday 15 June. At Port Erin visitors Nobles had the better of the encounter winning 6-3 on games with a big enough points margin for the handicap not to effect the outcome. The three winners for the home side were Carol Kaye, to single figures, Sylvia Shelbourne and Caroline Whitehead who edged out Sylvia Kennaugh 21-19. In reply Joyce Ogden also won to single figures for Nobles.

At Peel, taking the handicap into account there was only one point, in Port St Mary’s favour, in it after the first block of 5 matches, and up to the last two games it was still theoretically possible for the home side to win. However by the end of the match the visiting side won 7-2 on games and by a margin of 17 points. Tricia Bull and Val Macfarlane won to single figures , while Joyce Kelly and Mary Moffatt were the two winners for the home side. Peel players resisted well with Rose Corfield reaching 18 against Wendy Kennaugh and Heather Horsburgh just losing out 20-21 to Jayne Kneen.

Ladies’ over 60’s League Thursday 15 June

The Trend sponsored Ladies’ over 60’s league has reached its halfway point with last year’s winners, Port St Mary A in a commanding first place. Peel Sunset are in second place, holding a narrow lead over Castletown in third.
Returning after their break, Onchan were top scorers of the morning, winning five of their six games against Breagle, whose lone winner was Steff Swift. Port Erin visited Port St Mary B and gained a win by just 3 points despite winning 4-2 on games in the closest match of the day, the two winners for the home side being Roma Ware and Ann Maddrell to single figures. Port St Mary A did not have it all their own way on their visit to Nobles, drawing on games, but a good win to single figures by Val Macfarlane gave them a reasonable points advantage. Peel Sunset won four games against Ballaugh, three of them to single figures while the signature match of the morning saw Lynda Wilson come through 21-20 against Mary Simmonds. Mooragh Park had a good result at Villa, drawing the match on games. However wins to single figures by Muriel Cain and Margaret Corlett gave the home side a win on points. Kay McKiernan and Moira Anderson had a ding-dong battle with Moira just coming through 21-20.It was close at Marown where the home side had a 4-2 win on games, but Jan Osborne‘s winning to single figures cut their points advantage to just seven..

Ladies’ Night League Friday 16 June

After the break for the TT the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored leagur resumed on Friday 16 June, this match being the final one in the first half of the fixture list.
The battle for this year’s honours would appear to be going to one of three teams. Reigning champions, Port St Mary have a slender 13 point lead over South Ramsey while Castletown are not far behind in third place. These three are drawing away from Nobles who are in fourth place with a fair lead over the following group.
Port St Mary were taking no prisoners winning all nine game against Onchan. Dee Lewis put up the greatest resistance for the visitors, reaching 17 against Kellie Maddrell-Reeve. South Ramsey won seven games, five of them to single figures, the two winners for Ballaugh being Ann Gale and Christine Macdonald, while third placed Castletown reached 170 points winning six games to three, with Ann Hollingworth almost adding a seventh game when she lost out 21-20 to Di Benson. At Peel, Sunset won by 9 points despite losing 6-3 on games. For the home side Joyce Kelly won to single figures, while three players, Shirley Corrin, Cath Parker and Heather Horsburgh lost out 20-21. Heather’s game against Joyce Ogden may also be the longest game of the season, lasting 38 ends. Despite Tracy Moore winning to single figures Purt le Moirrey struggled at Marown although they had two more winners in Debra Cooper and Rita Callister, while Mooragh Park won six games, three to single figures, against Douglas who also had a win to single figures courtesy of Jan Osborne.

Ramsey Town Cup

Despite the heavy rain in the morning a field of 20 convened for the Mooragh Park ladies’ singles open on Saturday 10 June to play for the Ramsey Town Cup. Although the rain cleared the strong winds and the state of the green made for tricky playing conditions. In recent years there have been times when this competition has had to be cancelled due to lack of entries so it was good to see an increase in numbers, but a shame that the event was not supported by more clubs on the island.
Quarter-finals: Maureen Lacey 21, Vicky Lloyd-West 14: Lyn Bolton 21, Janet Monk 20 ; Jenny Moore 21, Fiona Kennish 12; Gill Morgan 21, Bethany Kennish 12
This set up two North v South semi-finals as Lyn Bolton from South Ramsey took on Maureen Lacey , Mooragh Park while Jenny Moore, South, played Gill Morgan, Mooragh Park.
The games went with the form book, seeing the two South Ramsey players going forward to meet in the final.
Semi-finals: Lyn Bolton 21, Maureen Lacey 12 ; Jenny Moore 21, Gill Morgan 13.
In the final Jenny roared away in spectacular fashion, leading 17-8 after eleven ends, at which point Lyn got in taking the next two ends to get into double figures, but it was too little too late as Jenny took three of the next four ends to win 21-13.
The presentation was made by club president, Helen Martin, who said it had been a lovely afternoon despite the wind ! She then thanked everyone who had helped during the afternoon, particularly Julie for running the sheet and all those responsible for the teas, coffees and refreshments. Helen then introduced Ramsey commissioner Juan McGuinness, who presented the prizes.

Ladies’ Association Triples

There was a disappointing entry of eleven trios for the Association Ladies’ Triples played at Marown on Sunday 11 June, but what the field lacked in quantity it more than made up for in quality.

Once again the weather was a factor with strong winds throughout the afternoon and heavy showers for the latter stages, but despite this there was some fine bowling to be admired.

In the first semi-final, the Nobles’ group consisting of Paula Firth, Lin Ruscoe and Clare Cooper, who had two good wins to reach this stage, found the South Ramsey trio of Gill Dixon, Elaine Moore and Jenny Moore too hot to handle, losing out 21-11.

The other semi-final was a much closer affair with the Purt le Moirrey three, Tracy Moore, Linda Dawson and Chris Holland taking on a combination of Marown and Nobles’ in Philippa Taylor, Mary Alderson and Joyce Ogden. Honours were even after eight ends, the score standing at 11-11. The Southerners took three of the next four ends, including a 2 and a 3 to lead 17-12 when a 4 from the combo brought them to within one point. Purt le Moirrey got to all but with a 1 and a 2, but a further four brought their opponents level. A one on the final end gave the combo a place in the final

Semi-finals: Gill Dixon, Elaine Moore, Jenny Moore 21, Paula Firth, Lin Ruscoe, Clare Cooper 11; Philippa Taylor, Mary Alderson, Joyce Ogden 21, Tracy Moore, Linda Dawson, Chris Holland 20.
In the final the South Ramsey set had the edge throughout, although there was not a lot in it after eight ends with the combo trailing by one point at 13-14. With each end being hotly contested there were few multiples and it was a closer match than the final score might suggest.

Final: Gill Dixon, Elaine Moore, Jenny Moore 21; Philippa Taylor, Mary Alderson, Joyce Ogden 17

The presentation was made by Association president, Rosie Winckle, who thanked Marown for the use of the green and their members for measuring and stewarding, and also for providing the delicious refreshments.

Tuesday 23 May – Both Port St Mary teams had a successful morning as A and B each posted a maximum. The B team played host to Mooragh Park, who fought well with four of their players reaching double figures. Port Erin had the better of Ballaugh, in a match where all six players reached double figures, winning 4-2 on games. Each encounter at Marown was very close, the match ending level on games with no player scoring less than 16. Two of the games went all the way with Celia Joughin losing out 20-21 to Joyce Gardiner, and Marcia Pearson just pipping Rita Callan by the same score. Ladies’ Night League Friday 26 May

It does not happen very often but in the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored Ladies’ league on Friday 26 May the match between Peel Sunset and Douglas ended drawn on points, despite the visitors winning 5-4 on games. Three wins to single figures by the home side balanced out the one by Jan Osborne for Douglas, the result showing the value of fighting for every point even if you still end up losing your game. Mooragh Park had a successful journey to Ballaugh, where they won 5-4 on games, but there were some very close match-ups with Gill Morgan reaching 19 against Ann Gale and in reply Pat Mason just losing out 20-21 to Ann Chapman. Purt le Moirrey were up against it when South Ramsey won seven games, four of them to single figures, but managed to register two good wins by Linda Dawson and Tracy Moore. Ladies’ Night League Friday 19 May

Unfortunately both Peel Sunset and Purt le Moirrey were a player short on Friday 19 May. Peel travelled to Castletown where a good win by Shirley Corrin saved their blushes while Purt le Moirrey did a little better on their visit to Mooragh Park, coming away with three winners in Tracy Moore, Chris Holland and Lesley Coker. South Ramsey were ruthless against Onchan, winning all nine games, six of them to single figures. The best result for Onchan was Wendy McDowell’s 14 against Kim Hargraves. Port St Mary had a strong result against Nobles, winning 6-3 with all nine players reaching double figures. The three winners for Nobles were Sylvia Kennaugh. Rebecca Teare and Paula Firth. It was hard fought at Marown where all but one player reached double figures, the home side taking the match 5-4, defeating Port Erin by just eight points, Barbara Graham won to single figures at Douglas, but it was not enough as Ballaugh lost 4-5 on games with two of the Douglas players also winning to single figures.

Ladies’ Night League Wednesday 17 May

There were no very high scores in the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored ladies’ league on Wednesday 17 May. In the top of the table clash at Castletown, the tricky green caught several of the Port St Mary players out, the home side winning 6-3 on games, although Ann Maddrell and Margaret Tasker almost added to the visitors’ games tally, reaching 19 and 20 points against Marie Ashurst and Ann Hollingworth respectively. Top scorers of the night were Mooragh Park on their visit to Onchan. The two winners for the home side were Marilyn Ellison and Sue Gawne, while five of the visiting side won to single figures.South Ramsey were successful on their journey south, winning 5-4 on games, but with four wins to single figures they had a good points advantage. Nobles also won 5-4 and despite Rosie Winckle’s win to single figures for Marown, the home side’s three wins to single figures gave them the match .The star game saw Shirley Whelan edge out Alison Keggen 21-20. Purt le Moirrey had the better of Douglas 6-3 with three wins to single figures. Two of Douglas’s wins, by Brenda Williams and Jan Osborne were also to single figures, but it was not enough. Ballaugh showed the advantage of fighting for every point as, despite losing 4-5 on games, they came through to win by 5 points.

Ladies’ IOM Pairs

Twenty-two pairs assembled for the Ladies’ IOM doubles championship at Castletown on Sunday 21 May. Initially the weather was sunny but cold and clouded over mid-afternoon. However the latter stages of the event were played in beautiful, warm sunshine.
The Castletown green was fast-running and its usual tricky self, but despite that there were some very close and exciting games.
The outstanding player in the first few rounds was Rita Callister, showing that age is no handicap as she and her partner, Shelley Kennish, despatched Dot Mylchreest and Pauline Worrall 21-17, Maureen Payne and Chris Price 21-19 then Margaret Tasker and Tricia Bull 2!-20 before losing out in the semi-finals 21-20 to Ann Maddrell and Katy Williams, a game they were ahead in until the last four ends.
Quarter-finals; Sheeley Kennish and Rita Callister 21, Margaret Tasker and Tricia Bull 2o; Katy Williams and Ann Maddrell 21, Lyn Bolton and Paula Garrett 17; Ann Hollingworth and Heike Perry 21, Kath Kinley and Marie Ashurst 17; Debbie Leece and Alison Keggen 21, Philippa Taylor and Joyce Ogden 12.
In the first semi-final Rita and Shelley made the better start being 17-10 up after ten ends. Katy and Ann won five of the next six ends to level at 19-19, then the next end to reach “all but”. their opponents won the next end-20-20. It was all on the last end where Katy and Ann came through to win 21-20.
In the other semi-final, Debbie Leece and Alison Keggen, who had played well all afternoon, kept level with Ann Hollingworth and Heike Perry for the first part of the game, but a 4 and a 3 in the last few ends saw the Castletown pair through to the final 21-13.
The home pair shot off to a 15-10 lead before the Port St Mary girls won five of the next six ends to level at 16-16.Ann and Heike then got the jack back and won the next four ends to take the title 21-16.
The Presentation was made by Association president, Rosie Winckle, who thanked Castletown for the use of their green and their help in measuring, marking etc. She also complimented them on the state of the green. Thanks also went to Heather for running the sheet and Elaine for organising the competition.
