Keggen & Bolton Win Jordan Cup
Jordan Cup Winners 2019
Lyn Bolton & Alison KeggenThe Jordan Cup was held on Saturday 20th July with a good entry of 32 Ladies entering the competition which was played in a drawn doubles format. The teams were split into four groups playing in a round-robin format with each game consisting of ten ends with the fifth and tenth end being a “power end” where points scored are doubled.
Qualifying from the first three groups were Lyn Bolton and Alison Keggen, Pat Robertson and Paula Firth, Chris Price and Libby Andrade. The final group saw Debbie Leece and Caroline Whitehead joint on points with Rebecca Leece and Joyce Kelly so a one end shootout would decide the final spot. One player from each team would contest the end and sisters Rebecca and Debbie battled it out with Debbie bowling closest to the jack taking herself and Caroline through.
In the first semi-final, Alison and Lyn took on Pat and Paula. A great start saw Alison and Lyn build a 6-0 lead before scoring a two on the power end which was doubled taking them to 10-0. Pat and Paula picked up their first point on end seven and took the final power end but Alison and Lyn went through 17-3 winners.
The second semi-final was nip-tuck with the game evenly poised after the first power end at 5-5. After eight ends Debbie and Caroline led 8-6 before a three pulled their opponents back in front 9-8 meaning whoever won the final power end would reach the final. Debbie and Caroline won the end taking the victory 10-9.
The final was a tight affair with Alison and Lyn leading 3-1 after four ends with the players restricting each other to singles. On the first power end, Alison and Lyn scored a three allowing them to take control of the match and lead 9-1. Debbie and Caroline fought back and won three out of the next four ends to trail 10-5 going into the final power end. The final end proved to be a cliff hanger, with Debbie and Caroline lying two Debbie sent her last bowl which went into the end close to making a third. With all the players checking the end Alison and Lyn conceded two down and hung on to take a 10-9 victory.
At the conclusion, Rebecca Teare presented the Trophy to the winners and praised all the players for a great day of bowls and thanked all the members of Nobles who helped run the competition.
Quayle Secures Dreswick Cup

Photo: Mike AshmoleThere was a good entry of 46 who contested this year’s Dreswick Cup at Port St Mary. The competition was kindly sponsored by The Albert Hotel – Port St Mary. Good weather and a very good green led to an excellent afternoon of bowling.
In the quarter finals Derek Cadamy (Port Erin) lost 14-21 to Paul Skelly (Port St Mary), another home greener Chris Oates 8-21 to Stevie Kelly (Peel), last year’s winner Dave ‘Barney Kelly just lost 20-21 to Trevor Quayle, whilst Wayne Roberts lost 15-21 by Neil Withers (Marown).
In the first semi-final Paul Skelly played Ste Kelly, with both players playing great bowls and it was nip and tuck all the way. After 26 ends Skelly scored a double to take a 19-18 lead. Kelly hit back with a two and a single to take his place in the final. The second semi-final between Trevor Quayle and Neil Withers was also a quality game. At the halfway stage the score was 11-11. Quayle then put a good run together to win 21-15.
In the final Quayle started off the quicker taking a 11-6 lead. With excellent bowling from both players, Quayle reached the 20 mark with Kelly on 15. Kelly fought his way up to 19-20 before Quayle got the point he needed to win The Dreswick Cup for the third time, in what was a quality final.
At the presentation Wayne Roberts thanked the Port St Mary ladies for their usual excellent catering, Ray Watterson for the great condition of the green, anyone else that helped on the day, and Pat O’Meara from the Albert Hotel for their continued sponsorship.
Positive Week for South Ramsey

Photo: Steve MooreThe first Rayner Shield semi-final was played on Wednesday evening with South Ramsey A hosting Onchan A. The green was in fantastic condition and was running superbly considering the amount of rain throughout the day, with the gusting winds playing its part affecting the bowls.
First game off on the night was home captain Glynn Hargraves who was ruthless recording a 21-3 win over Mark Kelly, with Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly not far behind with his 21-6 win over Steve Parker. After just two games with a 32 chalk lead the home team became huge favourites knowing two more wins would be likely enough to secure the win on the night barring any heavy defeats. Kevin Quirk responded for the visitors with a 21-14 win over Peter Collister. The last game of the first half was a great battle between David Bradford leading 20-16 against Peter Slinger, only for Slinger to dig in to take four consecutive singles to level at 20-20 and lying one for game with a 15-inch bowl Bradford held his nerve to bowl in for game in what was an entertaining game to watch.
In the second half Stefan Kelly put in a good performance scoring four doubles on the bounce to go from 8-6 up to 16-6 to take control, to beat Matthew Quirk 21-12. Alan Moore was next off and was the second home player on the night to get home 21-20 with Phil Kerruish 17-20 down he took three singles to level it at 20-20, only for Moore to put up a great first bowl to end the game. James Teare brought home the third 21-20 win of the night with his win over Frank Watson fighting back from a 16-20 deficit to win. With the match long over it was Chas Grills and Jordan Cain left on the green to entertain the crowd, with Grills leading 16-10 Cain dug in to run out with 11 consecutive chalks to take a 21-16 win.
The match of the season in Ellan Vannin Fuels division one took place at Crosby on Monday night between league leaders Marown A and current champions South Ramsey A. The visitors started strongly with captain Glynn Hargraves winning 21-13 over Dean Kipling after taking a 15-1 lead, Kipling dug in to claw his way back into the game. Next off was Alan Moore who had the visitors biggest win 21-12 against Phil Kelly, with Moore winning 17 ends to Kelly’s seven ends. James Teare continues to impress for the A team to make it 3-0 to the visitors with a good 21-14 win over Paul Kelly. Neil Withers took the only win in the first half for Marown with a 21-5 victory over Ian Moore to reduce the chalks difference to eight in favour of the visitors. In the second half the match was finely balanced with Colin Kelly swinging the aggregate in favour of Marown with a 21-9 win putting the home team four chalks ahead. Next off was David Bradford who claimed a hard fought 21-18 win over Paul Dunn, with Bradford taking a 9-1 and 14-6 lead which helped as Dunn found his rhythm to fight back well to get some all-important chalks on the board. Securing a fifth win on the night for South Ramsey was Stefan Kelly who held a 10-1 lead over Matthew Keggen, which he then extended to 19-9 only for Keggen to respond with three doubles on the bounce which would prove crucial in the match result. Kelly finished the game off with two singles to claim a 21-15 win. Last match on the green was between John Gelling and Peter Collister, with Collister performing well in the second half of the game to recover from a 4-15 deficit before losing out 15-21. Not many teams will go to Marown and take five games off the Crosby men yet South Ramsey did just that, however Marown had the last laugh of the night to edge the aggregate by a solitary chalk (135-134) to take the draw which kept their opponents at arm’s length.
Onchan A capitalised on the clash at Crosby to take a good 9-1 home win over Marown B to close the gap by four points on the league leaders. For Marown Peter Kelly prevented the whitewash with a 21-12 victory over Frank Watson.
In the other matches Castletown A brushed aside their B team with a 9-1 win, with Bob Clark the only winner with a 21-17 victory over Juan Kermode.
Noble’s A took a good 4-6 win away from Mooragh Park with their win over North Ramsey A with Tommy Collister merciless with his 21-0 win on the night.
South Ramsey B closed the gap on Marown B despite slipping to a 3-7 home loss to Peel A, whilst Douglas A did enough to take a 6-4 home win over Port St Mary A.
In division two Ballaugh A continued their good form with their 2-8 away win over second from bottom North Ramsey B, whilst Port Erin B took a hard fought 4-6 away win over Marown C who continue to hold their old own in a match that had five games losing to 19 and above in a finely contested match.
Port St Mary B slipped to a disastrous 3-7 home defeat to their C team with the result suggesting some of their players should be playing in different teams. Finch Hill A performed well to see off close rivals Onchan B with a 6-4 home win.
In division three runaway leaders South Ramsey C recorded a hard fought 6-4 home win over Onchan C, whilst the fight for second goes on with second placed Noble’s B winning 9-1 at home to Douglas C, Finch Hill B lie in third after their 3-7 away win against Port Erin B, whilst Ballaugh C were ruthless with their 10-0 home win over Peel D. Just four points separate second place Onchan (74) and fourth placed Ballaugh (70).
Onchan Commissioners Cup
A total of 26 ladies entered the competition which started at 1pm under difficult weather conditions which only got worse as the afternoon progressed.
There were 5 preliminary games and going through to the quarter finals were 8 pairs.
The first game of the quarter finals saw Jenny and Elaine Moore win their game against Sue Gawne and Marilyn Ellison 21-9, the second game Paula Firth and Lin Ruscoe beat Caroline Corlett and Libby Andrade in a closely fought game 21-16, the third game Chris Price and Jean Radcliffe defeated Maureen Payne and Lynda Clarke 21-13 and finally in the fourth game Phillipa Taylor and Joyce Ogden eased past Judy Kelly and Helen Caley 21-7.
In the first semi-final, Jenny and Elaine Moore triumphed 21-13 against Paula Firth and Lin Ruscoe. In the other semi-final Chris Price and Jean Radcliffe conceded their game against Phillipa Taylor and Joyce Ogden 16-14, the deteriorating weather conditions playing a part in their decision thus Phillipa Taylor and Joyce Ogden made their way through to the final against Jenny and Elaine Moore.
In the final Phillipa Taylor and Joyce Ogden were unable to get the better of their opponents Jenny and Elaine Moore who were in commanding form and eventually triumphed 21-6.
Overall, despite the inclement weather the afternoon proved to be a success and there was some extremely good bowling on display from all entrants.
Onchan Ladies Bowling Club and all entrants would like to thank Kathryn Williams, the Vice Chairman of Onchan Commissioners for turning out in such awful weather conditions to present the trophy.
Low Scores Leave League Wide Open
The Ladies Night League entered round 16 with Nobles and Castletown A looking to extend their advantage over Champions Port St Mary A who sit out from this set of matches.
Castletown A travelled to Breagle Glen to face Port Erin knowing a big score could help them regain top spot in the league. Castletown won six of the games including Anne Oates, Hilary Kermode, Sue Peach, Hannah Drewett and Kim Foy who all won to single figures. Home players Carole Kaye along with Lynda Cadamy and Di Bendson, who won to single figures, restricted Castletown’s final tally with the match finishing 107-154 (3-6).
Nobles had a tricky encounter against South Ramsey, who had just won the Jean Kelly Competition the night before. The match finished 5-4 on games with Elaine Moore top-scoring for the away team 21-8. Debbie Leece and Paula Firth both won to single figures helping Nobles to a 27 chalk victory 153-126 (5-4).
Onchan broke their run of eight consecutive losses by defeating Peel Sunset. Dee Lewis won 21-3 for the home side with wins also coming from Caroline Corlett, Jo Smith, Libby Andrade, Sue Gawne and Maureen Payne. Peel had wins from Lynda Wilson 21-18, Heather Horsburgh 21-7 and Mary Moffatt 21-3 reducing the deficit but the home side won by 13 chalks 154-141 (6-3).
Marown picked up a comfortable home win over Douglas with Rosie Winckle, Philippa Taylor and Lil Smith leading their side to victory with single figure wins. Pat Kelly and Wendy Cowin won for the away team with Shantelle Thorpe just losing 21-20 to Ceila Joughin. Final score 166-107 (7-2).
Mooragh Park hosted Ballaugh with the away side coming away with the win despite losing 5-4 on games. Alison Millard won 21-10, Voirrey Oates and Gill Dixon both won 21-8 and Barbara Graham won 21-5 to put the away side in control. Helen Martin 21-8 and Vicky Lloyd-West 21-7 reduced the gap with Shannon McMullan, Janet Monk and Caroline Parker also winning. The home side, however, fell seven chalks short losing 136-143 (4-5).
Castletown B welcomed Port St Mary B with the away side leaving with the spoils claiming a 27 chalk win. Youngster Charlotte Peach collected another win beating Lesley Coker 21-16 and teammates Barbara Young, Linda Dobinson and Joy Stephens also won. PSM picked up five wins, Brenda Hawkard, Debra Cooper and Pauline Worrall winning 13, 10 and 11 whilst Rita Callister 21-8 and Edwina Reid 21-9 helped secure victory for PSM. The match ended 135-162 (4-5).
At the end of the round Nobles remain top 13 chalks ahead of Castletown with South Ramsey moving into third position due to Port St Mary A sitting out. Port St Mary have now slipped back 173 points and will look to reduce that gap in the coming weeks before their rivals sit out.
Elaine Moore remains top of the individual merit having won all 15 games. Rebecca Teare, Jenny Moore, Clare Cooper and Mary Moffatt make up the top 5 ladies.
Peel Sunset Increase Lead
On Tuesday Peel Sunset pulled ahead in the league. They travelled south and had a good win against Port St Mary B 60-118(1-5).
In contrast their closest rivals, Port St Mary A, lost ground in the league when they came up against a strong Castletown side who were playing well on their own green. Joy Stephens, Ann Oates, Ann Hollingworth and Hilary Kermode all won their games for the home team but the visitors fought back with Ann Maddrell and Margaret Tasker both winning to single figures leaving a final score and a win for Castletown 102-84 (4-2).
Another team that lost ground in the league on Tuesday was Marown who slipped to 6th place following their result at Port Erin. Although Marowns Mia Moore, Mary Alderson and Celia Joughin all won their games, Joyce Ogden and Gwen Tuck pushed back for Port Erin B and played very well winning to single figures . It ended in a very close game with the visitors, Marown winning by just 6 points 91-97 (2-4).
Thursdays matches produced 4 very close matches which shows how evenly balanced some of the teams are and how most of the teams have improved as the season progresses.
Ballaugh and Douglas A ended with the visitors just ahead by one point 100-101 (3-3)
South Ramsey and Castletown, another 3-3 tally with the visitors losing by just 2 points 98-96.
Mooragh Park A, at home, losing to Marown by, again, 2 points 99-101 and finally Douglas B and Port Erin B shook hands with a 3 point win for the home side Douglas 94-91 (3-3).
Port Erin A won comfortably at home against Nobles with single figure successes for Lynda Cadamy, Voirrey Curphy and Jacqui Elliot but Sylvia Kennaugh and Paula Firth pushed back for the visitors with convincing wins. Final score 96-70 (4-2).
In the remaining matches Peel won comfortably against Mooragh Park B in a very friendly game 126-33 (6-0) and a home derby took place in Port St Mary with the A team winning 125-87 (5-1).
And so with Peel still to travel to play against the strong teams of Marown and South Ramsey and most teams having only 9 matches remaining, it really is still all to play for at the top.
Spar Mixed Doubles

Photo: Richard FaragherOn Sunday Ballaugh Bowling Club hosted the Spar Mixed Pairs. There were 29 pairs entered and they enjoyed the fine weather and some good play.
Bowing out in the quarter finals were Shirley and Gordon Corrin (Peel), Chris Price (Port St Mary and Dave Kelly (South Ramsey), Derek and Lynda Cadamy (Port Erin) and Alison Keggen (Noble’s) and Paul Kelly (Marown).
Losing semi-finalists were Kim Hargraves & Stefan Kelly (South Ramsey) and Lil Smith (Marown) & Edward Carlyle (South Ramsey), which left the final an all South Ramsey affair between Elaine Moore & Glynn Hargraves and Jenny Moore & James Teare.
Jenny and James made a good start winning the first three ends. After that it was close with only the five points scored in the first three ends the difference. Jenny and James finally won 21-15.
The presentation was made by Debbie Jones of Mannin Retail (Spar) who was introduced by Competition Secretary Richard Faragher who thanked the members for organising event with thanks given especially to the ladies in the kitchen. James Teare in his speech thanked the Spar – the Sponsors, Ballaugh members for organising the competition especially Richard Faragher for running the competition together with the measurers and markers.
Ladies’ Millennium fours
LADIES’ ASSOCIATION MILLENNIUM FOURS.
A total of forty-four ladies gathered at Castletown on Saturday 13th. July to compete in the Ladies’ Association Millennium team fours.
Each “match” consisted of two singles games and a doubles, the players for each being drawn at random.
The first match pitted one of the three Castletown teams against South Ramsey. Although Ann Hollingworth won her game against Kim Hargraves, South Ramsey were convincing winners 40-21. It was nice to see some of our younger players taking part, including Grace Quayle in this match.
In match 2 Nobles faced another Castletown team and were denied a full house when Sue Peach came through 15-13 against Alison Keggen, the final score being 43-31 in Noble’s favour.
The third prelim. was the closest match of the afternoon, with Mooragh Park 1 facing a combined Port St Mary / Port Erin team. In the singles matches Tricia Bull’s 15-9 win over Madison McMullan, followed by Shannon McMullan’s 15-11 win over Margaret Tasker left the combined team two points ahead with the doubles to come. A 15-11 win by Janet Monk and Helen Martin over Mavis Franks and Voirrey Curphey saw the Ramsey team through by a margin of two points.
In the quarter-finals South Ramsey faced Nobles, the game of this match being a closely fought battle between Kim Hargraves and Debbie Leece, which was neck and neck all the way through, Debbie eventually taking it 15-14. to leave South Ramsey one short of a maximum score as they won 44-36.
Mooragh 1 faced their less experienced club mates, Mooragh 2, in a match containing four junior girls, and despite some dogged resistance from their opponents they came through 45-24.
It all came down to the doubles in the Castletown 2 v Port St Mary team as the singles were divided, Heike Perry winning 15-9 against Kellie Maddrell, balanced by Chris Price’s 15-8 win over Tracy Moore. Port St Mary were !5-10 winners in the doubles, going through to the semi-finals 39-33.
The last quarter-final saw two combos, Maureen Payne joining Lin Ruscoe, Paula Firth and Sylvia Kennaugh from Nobles, taking on Oggie’s Angels. The first singles saw Philippa Taylor get off to a flyer against Lin Ruscoe, but Lin dug deep to level at 14-14 before Phi;ippa took the game 15-14. With the other two games going Oggie’s Angels way, they advanced 45-30.
In the semi-finals, South Ramsey scored the full 45 points against Mooragh 1, with Fiona Kennish, having been down 12-6 against Helen Martin, coming through to win 15-13. In the doubles Shannon and Madison McMullen played some very good bowls but were unable to get the better of their more experienced opponents, Elaine Moore and Kim Hargraves.
The other semi-final saw a convincing 15-5 win in the doubles for Chris Price and Kellie Maddrell, but Philippa Taylor and Lynda Cadamy each came through in the singles 15-4 to book their team’s place in the final.
Philippa and Jenny contested the first singles in the final, with there being little between the two protagonists up to 12-12, when three singles saw the game go to Philippa 15-12. Lynda Cadamy was in commanding form against Kim Hargraves, winning 15-3, while in the doubles Joyce Ogden and Lyn Bolton edged out Elaine Moore and Fiona Kennish 15-10 giving a final result Oggie’s Angels 45, South Ramsey 25.
HART & DAWSON CLAIM LANCASTER CUP

Peel hosted the Lancaster Cup men’s doubles with 27 pairs taking part.
At the end of the competition it was two new names on the trophy with the South Ramsey duo of Tony Hart and Lee Dawson winning the final against home greeners Dougie Allan & Gordon Corrin 21-13. With the score at 13-9 to Hart/Dawson they conceded a four to allow Allan and Corrin to level the score at 13-13. This kick started Hart and Dawson to respond by running out to take a deserved 21-13 win.
Losing out in the semis to the winners were the home pairing of Alan Cromwell & Tony Carroon (14-21), whilst the other semi was well contested with home greeners Brian Lindsay & Peter Greenlees losing out 18-21 to Allan and Corrin.
Losing out in the quarter finals were home pairing and competition favourites Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly and Tom Kelly, David Proctor (Peel) & Glenn Boland (Noble’s), Alan Moore (South Ramsey) & Sam Clague (Castletown) along with Derek Allen (Port Erin) & Alec Taylor (Peel).
The presentation was made by Peel competition secretary Dave Kelly, who thanked the sponsor David Lancaster, the team who ran the competition, all the club members who had helped throughout the day.
Success For South In Jean Kelly Competition

South Ramsey took on Port St Mary A in the final of the Jean Kelly Handicap competition which was held on Onchan Bowling Green.
South Ramsey would start the match with a five-point advantage with the handicaps based on the teams respective 2018 league position.
A success for Port St Mary would equal the record of five wins held by Castletown. South Ramsey would be chasing their second win in the competition with their first coming 17 years ago in 2002.
Elaine Moore (SR) vs Ann Maddrell was the first match off the green. Elaine started brilliantly surging into a 15-0 lead before Ann was able to get off the mark. Ann battled hard and responded with a seven-point run but was unable to prevent Elaine from running out 21-8 and guided South Ramsey off to a perfect start.
Ladies Champion Jenny Moore (SR) took on Mavis Franks with Mavis taking an early 6-3 lead before a nine-point run for Jenny took her 12-6 up. Mavis responded with three points in two ends before Jenny scored nine points without reply to win 21-9.
Girls Junior Champion Bethany Kennish (SR) took on Jayne Kneen with the youngster leading after 20 ends 13-11. Jayne then won six out of the next seven ends to clinch PSM first win on the night 21-14.
Kim Hargraves (SR) was next off in her match against Chris Price. Kim raced into an early 11-2 lead before Chris picked up some momentum to bring the match back to 11-8. Kim was able to build another run of winning five ends out of six to lead 18-9 before going 20-11 up. Chris tried to stage a comeback but the game ended with a win for Kim 21-16.
The final game from the first half saw Sue Collier (SR) take on Margaret Tasker. The game was evenly poised after ten ends with the score level at 7-7 before Margaret had a break of 10 points to take control of the game. Sue scored on a few more ends but Margaret won the game 21-12.
At the halfway stage in the match, South Ramsey held a 19 point lead.
Lyn Bolton (SR) against Trish Bull was the first game off in the second half with another strong performance from South edging them closer to victory. Lyn started the game well lying 9-1 up after nine ends. Trish was unable to break into the game but at 19-4 down picked up a couple of doubles before Lyn won 21-8, taking her team 32 points ahead.
Val Macfarlane (PSM) got off to good start in her match against Fiona Kennish leading 9-4 after ten ends and 14-5 after 15 ends. Fiona fought hard into double figures before Val won 21-13 reducing the deficit to 24 chalks.
Kellie Maddrell (PSM) gave her team hope in the match after winning her game against Jill Quayle 21-10. After a nip tuck start, Kelly broke away to lead 17-7 before winning 21-10 bringing the match score down to 13 chalks.
The final game between Gill Morgan (SR) and Wendy Kennaugh started like so many on the night, with a player racing into an early lead. Gill was leading 14-1 after eleven ends with the match now safe for South Ramsey. Wendy managed to take control of the jack and a run of 9 ends brought her back into the game at 14-11. Gill, with a run of four singles, moved 18-11 up and despite Wendy picking up a couple more doubles was unable to stop Gill who won 21-16.
South Ramsey won the final with the result finishing 159-141 giving them an 18 chalk win on the night.
Following the match, the presentation was held by Jean Kelly’s family. Thanks were given to Onchan for hosting the final, all the spectators who attended and the players for putting on a good performance.
The association would also like to thank Moore Kelly and his family for their continued generosity and providing fantastic food and refreshments for all the players and spectators.
