Only three teams left with 100% record

The Tower Insurance Men’s Over 60’s Bowls is looking set to be one of the most open in recent years, with after just three games gone only three teams have a 100% record. Peel Sunset A, Douglas A and North Ramsey A are the three. In very balmy conditions Peel had comfortable wins at home to Nobles B and away to Onchan B, North Ramsey had a 7-1 win over Port St Mary A at the Mooragh, then came away with the points on their visit to Marown in a close 5-3 match. Douglas A defeated the second teams of Port St Mary away and Castletown at home. Defending Champions Castletown A got off to a bad start losing their second game of the season on their visit to Onchan A by 5 games to 3, Onchan A then visited Port St Mary A and found a Port team in superb form inflicting a 8-0 whitewash over their visitors, to keep up the pressure on the top teams. Castletown A eventually got their season up and running with a win over Nobles A at the crofts by 5 games to 3, this if after Nobles A used home advantage to beat Ballaugh on the Tuesday. Peel B had a couple of draws this week firstly in a close game at Castletown B, then repeating this at home to South Ramsey. Port Erin had a mixed week winning at home to Finch Hill before losing to Nobles B. while Finch Hill had a 5-3 victory over PSM B.

Over 60’s Men’s League shock for champions

The Tower Insurance Over 60’s League got off to a sensational start on Thursday with defending Champions Castletown A going down at home to their nemesis North Ramsey A by 5 games to 3 to give the Northerners renewed hope in their attempt to be top of the pile this year, Two of last year’s top four teams met at Port St Mary with South Ramsey providing the opposition and it was the Southsiders that used their home advantage to gain both points in a 6-2 victory, It is nice to see Ray Watterson back after his shoulder injury last year. Onchan A are another team with title aspirations and they had a good win at Ballaugh by 6 games to 2, While Peel Sunset A also travelled well and also had a 6-2 win at Finch Hill A, unfortunately Finch Hill had to withdraw their B team prior to the seasons start. Peel Sunset B made it a good start for the westerners with a 5-3 win over Port St Mary B, Marown also started well with a good 5-3 win over Castletown B at the Memorial Fields, Douglas A had a comprehensive 8-0 win over Port Erin at the Villa, and not to be outdone Noble’s B turned the tables on Douglas B with another 8-0 victory, Noble’s A also got two points in their first game with a 5-3 win over North Ramsey B. Nobles who have amalgamated the old Noble’s Park and Noble’s Mixed teams should have two very good outfits this year.

Hands Trophy

The ladies’ season got under way at Port St Mary on Saturday 4 April with the non-winners Hands Trophy 2014 held over from last season when it could not be played due to inclement weather.
The disappointing entry of 15 may have been due in part to the cold weather endured so far this season, but conditions could not have been better as the event started, although the mist rolled over later in the afternoon. There were some very close matches throughout and this carried through into the final.

Quarter-finals: Margaret Tasker 21, Connie Pettegrew 7; Kim Hargraves 21. Tricia Bull 19; Paula Firth 21, Rita Callister 13; Maureen Payne 21, Lin Ruscoe 20.
Semi-finals: Kim Hargraves 21, Margaret Tasker 6; Paula Firth 21, Maureen Payne 14

In the final Paula stormed into an early lead of 14-6 before Kim clawed her way back having the better of the middle stages leaving a very exciting “nip and tuck” finish with Paula coming through to take the trophy 21-19.

The prizes were presented by Association president, Pat Robertson, who thanked the Port St Mary club for their hospitality, congratulated the greenkeeper on the state of the green and also thanked everyone involved in the smooth running of the afternoon.

John & Fiona Kennish win Kenny Parker Rosebowl

A total of 30 pairs came together at South Ramsey’s green on Sunday to battle for the Kenny Parker Any Combination Doubles Rosebowl.

The competition was run by North Ramsey but had been switched from the Mooragh Park to allow the green there more time to recover from the extensive work that has been undertaken over the winter.
While a persistent mist lingered all day it did at least remain dry allowing for some competitive bowling on a green that was running well. In the end the final was an all South Ramsey family affair with John and Fiona Kennish triumphing 21 – 15 over Andy Kennish and Alan Moore in a closely fought final.

Losing out in the semis were the North Ramsey pairng ofSteve Parker and Steve Walmsley along with LynBolton from South Ramsey and Trevor Quayle from Port St Mary. Fallers at the quarter final stage were T & P Collins, A & P Taylor, F Watson and J Surridge and S Kelly and M Kneen.

At the end of a good day’s bowling Kenny’s son Steve presented the trophy to the winners, thanking all those who had helped to organise the day and giving particular thanks to South Ramsey for making their green available for the running of the competition and for providing the catering.
