Paul Gets The Job Dunn
Peel Bowling Club held the Peel Town Cup on Saturday with a healthy entry of 44 players keen to get their hands on the prestigious trophy it was Marown man Paul Dunn who won it, winning his first open competition in style.
Losing out at the quarter final stage were Sid Bolton (South Ramsey), Harry Minor (Port Erin), Colin Kelly (Marown) and Wayne Roberts (Port St Mary).
Falling at the semi-final stage was Glynn Hargraves (South Ramsey) who was well beaten by home greener Stevie Kelly, who was the quickest out of the blocks with Kelly winning comfortably 21-13. Also losing out was multi time Peel Town Cup winner Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly to Paul Dunn, with Dunn performing well to see the game out 21-18. This put an end to the home crowds hopes of an all Peel final between father and son.
The final was sure to be entertaining, with both players knowing a new name would be on the trophy and that one of them would be winning their first open. Kelly started well, picking up the first few ends to take a 11-6 lead before Dunn got in to go on a good run turning the score from a five point deficit into a five point lead to go 16-11 up playing a lengthy mark over the crown, constantly altering the length slightly. Kelly got back in to take the next few ends to pull the score back to 14-16. Dunn showed a determined attitude throughout the final, with his composure helping to see the game out winning deservedly 21-15 to finally break his duck in open competitions.
The presentation was made by Peel President Dougie Allan, who thanked everyone who had entered, all the Peel members who had helped in any way throughout the day. It was also noted that £320 was paid out in prize money, in part thanks to an anonymous sponsor on the day which helped contribute to a good prize fund.
Another Thriller At The Villa
The final of the Rayner Plate was won by Noble’s A following a brilliant comeback to win 185-175, winning by just 10 points in a thrilling final against third division side South Ramsey D. The handicaps were set with Noble’s A on +40 and South Ramsey D on +76, giving the Ramsey men a start of 36. The rain throughout the day had taken the electric pace out of the Villa green, unfortunately the green became quite heavy despite the puddles managing to clear before play took place.
Things were looking good for the D Team with Richard Davies turning in a stunning performance to see off the ever improving Glenn Boland to win 21-7 extending the lead to 50 points. Next off for South Ramsey was third division merit leader Ian Moore, turning in a fine performance to see off the experienced Dave Pease to record a fine 21-12 win to extend the lead to 59 points. Noble’s responded as expected with Reginald Temporaza and David Quayle both performing well to both win 21-9 against Franz ten Donkelaar and Martin Caley respectively. At the halfway stage Noble’s had clawed just one point back, however they had a good back four to go on with it all to do.
First game off in the second half was the wily Tommy Collister, who took a 15-1 lead against Matthew Corkill, with Corkill doing well to dig in playing some excellent bowls before eventually losing 13-21. Next game off was between the two captains with Kevin Firth leading the way for his Noble’s team with a strong 21-9 win against James Moore. This pulled the deficit for Noble’s back to just 15 points. Mark ‘Postie’ Quinn was the next game off against 10 year old Ryan Hargraves who was competing in his first major final, giving a good account of himself throughout the game for the way he played and conducted himself throughout the game. Young Ryan started in style with a six inch bowl and a two foot bowl with Quinn bowling a good second to save one. From there Quinn played well, with Ryan chipping in with the odd point. At lying game down Ryan hit a great strike to take the jack off the green, which had the crowd cheering. Quinn finished the game off next end beating a good bowl, which Ryan just missed when playing up for Quinn to record a 21-7 win. This reduced the deficit to just one point with the last game on the green it was another experienced Noble’s player John Ruscoe needing to win his game against Jay Moore to secure the victory and a great comeback for Noble’s. Ruscoe wasted no time in doing this with an assured 21-10 win.
This South Ramsey team can take great pride in their performance in their first major final against a team that are looking favourites to be playing first division bowls next season, and they have players who can only improve in the future. All credit to the Noble’s players who performed brilliantly to turn around a huge deficit to record their first Rayner Plate win. Before Noble’s Park and Noble’s Mixed merged a few years ago to create Noble’s, Noble’s Mixed A won the Rayner Plate in 2006.
The presentation was made by Association Chairman Neil Withers who congratulated both teams on their performance, Douglas for the use of the green and the refreshments, Steve Moore for running the sheet and the supporters who turned up for what was an entertaining final, with good support for both teams around the green.
Kelly Records Fifth Dreswick Cup Win
Port St Mary hosted the Dreswick Cup sponsored by the Albert Hotel on Thursday afternoon, with the competition attracting 43 entries to play on a tricky green in glorious sunshine.
The competition is unique in that it is the only Men’s Open Age competition that is held during the week on a working day. I have been reliably informed that the shops around the Island used to close on a Thursday afternoon, which would allow those that worked in the shops to enter the competition. School kids have been known to skip school to play in the popular competition, with the most notable being a 14 year old John Kennish winning his first open.
Losing out at the quarter final stage were Neil Withers (Marown), Brian Kelly (Marown), Keith Rise (Douglas) and home greener Paul Skelly.
In the first semi-final Jordan Cain (Onchan) had the tough task of facing South Ramsey man John Kennish, with Cain taking an early lead before Kennish fought back to go 19-18 up. Cain then secured three singles to see the game out 21-19 to book his place in the final. In the other semi-final Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly won his game comfortably 21-11 against Port St Mary player Wayne Roberts.
The final started as expected with Cain going for the shorter lengths and Kelly playing the longer marks as he had done all day. Kelly made the better start taking a 13-9 lead. Cain got back in but struggled to lead as well as he done throughout the day and during the semi-final, perhaps not helped by the green losing some of the pace with the shadow being cast over the green. Kelly managed to keep Cain at arms lengths throughout with the lead going to 17-12 and then 19-14. Cain then picked up a further two points to put the score at 16-19. On the last end Cain was unable to put up a good lead which Kelly managed to beat, with Cain then failing to better his first bowl it allowed Kelly to play a second counting bowl for game.
The presentation was made by Port St Mary Vice President, Peter Collins, who thanked the Ladies for the refreshments, everyone who had helped run the competition and prepare the green. Pat O’Meara from the Albert Hotel was then introduced to present the prizes.
Marown Retain Rayner Shield
Marown A retained the Rayner Shield on Friday evening at Noble’s Park, winning it for the 16th time and in doing so sit one win ahead of their opponents on the night Onchan A.
News had filtered through during the week that as well as Marown missing their captain Paul Dunn due to pre-booked holidays that Onchan were in a similar predicament with Peter Slinger also away.
It was always my opinion (and many others) that if Onchan were to win they would need to win on games, with the win on chalks possibly being beyond Onchan and so it proved with the games ending 4-4 and Marown easing to the win courtesy of winning by 30 chalks (150-120).
First off for Marown was Paul Kelly with a win over Rob Monk, with Monk leading 8-6 Kelly then scored six two’s and three singles to see the game out 21-11. Next off was the ever reliable Colin Kelly, who played the long lengths well against Kevin Quirk, going 20-5 up with Quirk picking up a further five points before Kelly managed to finish the game off to take a 21-10 win. Hitting back for Onchan Matthew Quirk just got over the line 21-20 against Neil Withers, with Quirk going 11-5 then 13-7 up before Withers fought back to take the lead 19-16, with Quirk getting back in at a vital time with Withers lying two for game. From there Withers scored one more to Quirk’s five. Phil Kerruish took on Bob Clark who had stepped in for their captain, which is a luxury for Marown to be able to bring in a player of Clark’s quality any time throughout the season. There were no signs of rustiness from Clark who performed well and despite being 11-16 down Clark dug in to get back to 19-20, before Kerruish got the one point he needed to take Onchan’s second win of the night 21-19. At the halfway stage it was 2-2 with Marown leading by 18 chalks (81-63).
In the second half Phil Kelly started well first end lying two good bowls either side of the jack with his opponent Jordan Cain trailing the jack to make two. From there Cain performed brilliantly scoring nine two’s and three singles to put Onchan right back in it winning 21-7 to lead 3-2 on games and reduce the deficit on chalks to just four. Dean Kipling squandered the chance to win to single figures over Mark Kelly with his second bowl, only needing to stay on the green within 6 yards for game. Kipling sent his second bowl off, which gave Kelly the chance to take two more points before losing out 10-21. Stepping in for the Onchan captain was Phil Watterson who performed well despite losing 5-21, keeping John Gelling down to scoring singles with his first ten points and having several good bowls that didn’t count. This sealed the win for Marown as they were now 4-3 ahead on games and 31 chalks ahead with only one game left on the green. The final game on the green was between Onchan’s Mike Thomas and Matthew Keggen with the game being close throughout. In the latter stages of the game Keggen took a 20-18 lead and was lying one for game with Thomas responding by playing out the counting bowl. Thomas then played into the heavy corner playing two bowls just over two foot away which caught Keggen out as he played two short bowls, which sealed a second 21-20 win of the night for Onchan and salvaged some pride.
The presentation was made by Steve Moore, who thanked everyone who helped, John Ruscoe for refereeing, Noble’s for the use of the green, also for providing the measurers and refreshments to the players and spectators. The Rayner Shield was then presented to Marown captain for the night Neil Withers.
1. Matthew Quirk 21-20 Neil Withers
2. Phil Kerruish 21-19 Bob Clark
3. Kevin Quirk 10-21 Colin Kelly
4. Rob Monk 11-21 Paul Kelly
5. Mark Kelly 10-21 Dean Kipling
6. Jordan Cain 21-7 Phil Kelly
7. Mike Thomas 21-20 Matthew Keggen
8. Phil Watterson 5-21 John Gelling

Margaret picked up a couple more points before Clare closed the game out 21-7 increasing Nobles lead to 23 points.

Heather Horsburgh introduced Moore Kelly who conducted the presentation on behalf of his family.

Port St Mary Ladies Team 2017
Back: Wendy Kennuagh, Chris Price, Kelly Maddrell-Reeve, Margret Tasker, Ann Maddrell, Trish Bull, Val MacFarlane, Win CollisterFront: Jayne Kneen, Katy Maddrell
As we reach the halfway stage in the C Tarlton Hodgson Ladies Bowling League only five points now separate the top three with Port St Mary leading the way on 2049 followed by South Ramsey 2046 and Castletown 2044. Nobles are in fourth position, and although they have drifted 89 points back from the leaders, they will still mount a challenge for the top spots.
Onto the results and we start with the most in form team at present Castletown. They were averaging just over 185 coming into the week and showed no signs of slowing down after another strong home performance where despite losing four games they still managed over 170 chalks. Two of their losses were 21-20 with Peel players Heather Horsburgh and Lynda Wilson just getting over the line. The returning Kath Kinley won 21-8 for the home side with Tracey Moore, Amanda Lawler and Heike Perry also winning to single figures. For Peel, Mary Moffatt top scored beating Sue Peach 21-9. Final match score 173-132 (5-4).
Port St Mary travelled the short distance to rivals Port Erin. Port St Mary had the better results on the night with Chris Price, Jayne Kneen, Kellie Maddrell-Reeve and Margret Tasker all winning to single figures. Port Erin did pick up three wins with Lynda Cadamy and Voirrey Curphey winning to single figures and Jenny Cain beating Katy Williams 21-19. The result finished 122-156 (3-6).
Purt Le Moirrey welcomed South Ramsey with the away side triumphing with a fine 136-173 (4-5) victory. Kim Hargraves top scored for the away side beating Chris Holland 21-4 whilst Jenny Moore also won to single figures beating Debra Cooper 21-8. Elaine Moore retained her 100% record notching up another win beating Dot Mylchreast 21-11.
Nobles bounced back from their result last week beating Onchan 171-108 (7-2). Nobles picked up some big wins as Clare Cooper won 21-1, Jayne Smith 21-4, Alison Keggen and Debbie Leece both winning 21-6. Onchan did pick up two wins from Jo Smith and Sue Gawne, with Dee Lewis unlucky to add a third losing 21-20 to Lin Ruscoe.
Douglas faced Castletown B with both teams containing players who are in their first and second year of bowling. Douglas got the upper hand in all but one game winning 180-94 (8-1). Rebekah Kelly won her first game of the season with Shantelle Thorpe also winning her second game of the season. Castletown’s Elaine McElroy prevented a whitewash winning her game 21-12.
In the final game on Friday Ballaugh were narrowly defeated at home to Marown 134-153 (4-5). Lil Smith and Elaine Dewhurst put in fine away performances to win 21-2 and 21-6 respectively with wins also for Rosie Winckle, Pat Withers and Mary Alderson. Ballaugh’s winners were Brenda Bowyer, Elaine Fenton, Gill Dixon and Pat Mason who won 21-6 in her game.
With half the season now gone the league has taken shape and the current top four will swap and change places and fight until the league concludes in September.
Individually Elaine Moore is the only player to have won all 12 games; although a mention to Top Lady winner Hannah Drewett who has only played 11 games but has a 100% record. Elaine is chased by team-mate Lyn Bolton who with Port St Mary’s Chris Price is only one chalk behind.
Looking ahead Port St Mary sit out giving the chasers free reign to pull ahead, at least temporarily. Nobles entertain Castletown B, South Ramsey go to Ballaugh and Castletown with a home tie to Douglas.
Janet Wins 7th Manx Championship
Mooragh Park hosted the Ladies Championship on Saturday 30th June with a field of 26 ladies.
Three former champions, Jenny Moore (South Ramsey); Janet Monk (Mooragh Park) and last years winner Shelley Kennish (South Ramsey), along with Lyn Bolton (South Ramsey), Alison Keggen (Nobles), Amanda Lawler (Castletown), Caroline Whitehead (Port Erin) and Rebecca Teare (Nobles) made up the quarter finals.
Two time champion Jenny Moore defeated fellow club mate Lyn Bolton to book her place in the semi finals and would face Rebecca Teare who booked her spot beating Caroline Whitehead.
Amanda Lawler ended Shelley Kennish title defence and six time champion Janet Monk defeated Alison Keggen.
In the first Semi Final Jenny Moore got off to a good start racing to a 13-4 lead after 11 ends. Rebecca dug in to chip away at the lead but couldn’t get a good run with the block and Jenny ran out 21-13 winner.
The second Semi Final was a repeat of the 2014 final with Janet Monk taking on Amanda Lawler. Janet started the game very well having a run with the block which saw her build up a 11-2 lead after 10 ends. Amanda closed the gap to 9-15 before a run of three 2’s saw Janet close out the game 21-9.
The final got underway with both players exchanging points in cagy a nip tuck battle which saw them level after eight ends with the score 5-5. Jenny and Janet tried to build momentum but with both bowling very well neither could make a break away. After 15 ends, with the game tight at 10-9 to Janet, the first decisive moment came. Janet reeled off a run of 6 ends to build a lead of 17-9. Jenny fought back with two quick doubles reduced the deficit to 17-13 before Janet moved within one point of victory 20-13. Jenny wasn’t done yet and came back finding a long mark which she settle on winning six ends to bring the scores level at 20-20. On the last end Jenny led a bowl which was just slightly tight and a yard through giving Janet room to leave her bowl counting for game. Jenny was unable to better her first bowl and Janet claimed her seventh Manx Championship extending her own record as the most decorated Ladies Manx Champion.
At the conclusion of the competition the presentation was made by Heather Horsburgh and President Sue Peach who thanked Mooragh Park for hosting the competition and to all those who assisted with the running of the competition.
Cumbria Duo Take Top Prizes
The top prizes in the Isle of Man June Bowls Festival went to two Cumbria players.
In the Men’s competition it was Martin Gilpin (Kendal Vic) from Cumbria who picked up his first June Festival win and the winners cheque for £3,000. Gilpin had to overcome the challenge of Chris Kelly (Thongsbridge) in a thrilling final on a tricky green. Kelly was quickest out of the blocks taking a 13-6 lead, then 16-9 and 17-13. From there Gilpin chipped away at the lead to draw level with his opponent. At 19-19 Gilpin sent the jack out which was less than a yard from the edge, however he was unable to keep his first bowl on the green. Kelly played a yard short bowl which Gilpin was unable to beat with his second, and Kelly missed the opportunity to make two for game. At 20-19 up Kelly led a bowl two foot to the side of the jack with Gilpin putting one a similar distance the other side of the jack. Kelly made sure he was counting by glancing the jack towards his side bowl to lie two and within touching distance of his first Festival win. Gilpin had other ideas, ensuring he reached to sit on Kelly’s back bowl to count one to leave the score tied at 20-20. Gilpin headed for a longer length mark and left his bowl just under a yard away, which Kelly was unable to beat which gave Gilpin the title. Kelly had the blow softened receiving a cheque for £1,000.
Gilpin reached the final courtesy of a 21-10 win over Colin Price (Dukinfield Central), whilst Kelly booked his place in the final defeating Thongsbridge team mate Craig Gant 21-9.
All the quarter finals in the Men’s tournament were the closest games I can recall with Onchan’s Matthew Quirk losing 19-21 to Price. Quirk received the George Craine trophy for the furthest Manxman. Phil Lee (Wallasey) just lost out 20-21 to Gilpin, whilst Gant ended the challenge of Nigel Briggs (Brighouse) 21-19. Finishing off the close games Kelly played another Thongsbridge team mate Jack Dyson with this also going to the wire with Kelly winning 21-19.
In the Ladies main competition it was another player from Cumbria Angela Athersmith (Ulverston Cons) who won the Ladies title and a cheque for £1,000 with a hard fought 21-19 win over Caroline Hall (Cleveleys WM) with the final being nip and tuck all the way through with neither player able to take control of the game. Hall received a cheque for £600 as runner up.
The semi-finals were close with Hall defeating Rachel Quirk (Crossgates) 21-17 to reach the final, whilst Athersmith was pushed harder by Diane Harrison (Lune Road) 21-19.
Furthest local player reaching the quarter finals was South Ramsey’s Elaine Moore who received the Visit IOM.com trophy. Moore’s challenge was ended by Hall 13-21. Joyce Foxcroft (Lune Road) lost 10-21 to Quirk, whilst one of the favourites Sarah Fox (Woodlands) lost 20-21 to Harrison. Karen Hill (Ossett Flying Horse) lost 10-21 to Athersmith.
The Men’s Tourism was played down to the winner on Thursday morning on Noble’s 1 with James Wilcox (Crossgates) following up on his June Festival win in 2017 with the Tourism title defeating Callum Wraight (Castlefields) 21-18 in an entertaining final.
Losing semi-finalists were Phil Lee 18-21 (Wallasey) to Wilcox, whilst Paul Bailey (Meersbrook) lost out 12-21 to Wraight.
The Ladies Tourism was also played down to the winner on Thursday morning on Noble’s 2 green with another entertaining final it was Sarah Fox (Woodlands) who held her nerve to bowl a winner at 20-20 which after being measured in this was enough to earn the Tourism title with a 21-20 win over Jackie Butterworth (Knutsford BC).
Fox earned her place in the final following a hard fought 21-20 semi-final win over Debbie Leece (Noble’s) after coming back from 16-20 down. In the other semi-final Butterworth had a comfortable 21-10 win over Mary Alderson (Marown) to book her place in the final.
The Men’s consolation was won by Melvyn Byron (Marton Institute) who beat Kevin Nicholas (Gresford Colliery) 21-17 in a close final. The Ladies consolation was won by a regular visitor to the Island with Joyce Jones (Syke BC) defeating Amanda Nicholson (Gresford Colliery) 21-16.
The Visit.Com Flyer title went to Callum Wraight (Castlefields) who had a 9-3 win over Martyn Watkin (Cortonwood), whilst the Last Chance Mixed Final was won by Matt Gilmore (Wallasey) who beat Craig Ramell (Rishton) 21-15.
In the doubles competitions the Open Doubles was won by Joshua Mordue (Pudsey) and Joseph Cranston (Crossgates) with a 11-8 win over Conor Chamberlain (Stretton Anglesey) and Stevie Kelly (Peel Sunset) in a close final.
The Men’s doubles was won by Joseph Cranston (Crossgates) and David Gwilliam (Nursery Inn) who beat Alex Power (Bar Lane) and Dean Butler (Rishton) 11-6 in the final.
The Ladies pairs was won 11-8 by Sharon Ridgen (Penwortham Sports) and Shelley Kennish (South Ramsey) who beat Alexis Lunn-Gadd (Ossett Flying Horse) and Diane Harrison (Lune Road)
The Mixed pairs had local representation with Edward Carlyle (Onchan) and Sharon Ridgen (Penwortham Sports) just losing out 7-9 to Lee Longland (Rishton) and Sarah Edmondson (Rishton).
Callum Hits The Jackpot in PokerStars Invitation
The PokerStars IOM Invitation took place on Friday evening at South Ramsey Bowling Club immediately after the conclusion of the IOM bowls festival.
It was a strong field taking part with every player in the field having played county bowls. The format was 31 up with 5 on the card which is a format that hasn’t been played for a number of years on the Island, but is a popular format across the water.
Robby Fitzpatrick (Merseyside) was the first jack on taking on Billy Speed (Lancashire), with Speed taking control of the game early on without ever going behind in the game. Speed won to a comfortable 31-20 score.
Local player Jordan Cain made his first appearance in the competition, with Cain only one point behind Carl Fielding (Warwick and Worcester) at 20-21. Fielding took control from there to see the game out with a 31-22 victory.
Derbyshire man Conor Chamberlain took on five time Manx Champion Colin Kelly, with Kelly’s knowledge of the green over the years proving enough to take a 31-21 win.
The final game in the top half of the draw had top Merseyside player Matt Gilmore taking on North Lancs & Fylde man Dave Jackson with Gilmore taking the biggest win of the round with a 31-19 victory.
In the bottom half of the draw Jon Palmer (Shropshire) took on James Wilcox (Yorkshire) with Wilcox proving too strong for Palmer taking a 31-23 win.
Nidge Hughes (Merseyside) took on one of the top players on the bowls circuit Callum Wraight (Shropshire) with Hughes hanging on to the tail of Wraight throughout the game and lying two bowls on top of the jack at 27-29, however Wraight had one of his trademark strikes taking off both of Hughes’ bowls with the jack staying on the green to leave himself one. Wraight secured another single on the next end to win 31-27 with Wraight’s striking ability being the difference.
Richie Goddard (Shropshire) and Kevan Shaw (Lancashire) was a good encounter with several tight ends and measures with Shaw getting over the line 31-26.
The last game in the bottom half of the draw had Paul Bailey (South Yorkshire) taking on Merseyside man Phil Lee with the game being close throughout with Lee going 30-27 up before Bailey hit back with two singles and a two to edge it 31-30 to book his place in the quarter finals.
The first game of the quarter finals had Speed up against Fielding with Speed taking an assured 31-23 win to book his spot in the semi finals.
Colin Kelly had his challenge ended by Gilmore who had a comfortable 31-17 win.
In the third quarter final Wilcox took on Wraight with the game living up to expectations. It was close throughout with the score tied at 27 and then 29 with Wraight scoring a double to secure a hard fought 31-29 victory.
In the last quarter final game Bailey was always ahead against Shaw taking a 31-19 win.
In the first semi final Speed took on 2015 winner Gilmore with Speed using all his experience to book his spot in the final with a 31-28 win with Gilmore pushing hard to get through.
In the second semi final Wraight took on Bailey, with both players being big hitters their striking didn’t disappoint with a number of hits throughout the game with Wraight taking a 31-24 win over Bailey.

At the conclusion of play the presentation was made by event organiser Glynn Hargraves, who thanked the sponsor PokerStars for their continued support, the players for what made for an entertaining evening of bowls, the spectators for turning up to support, all the club members who had helped in any way to prepare for the competition ahead of the day and on the night.
