C Tarleton Hodgson postponed match

The match between Noble’s and Peel Sunset, postponed from Friday 8 May due to the weather conditions, was played on Tuesday 12 May. Peel were left wondering whether having four out of their nine players reaching a score of 4 was some sort of a record! The visitors did take three games with Joyce Kelly winning to single figures.

Top Lady

The Ladies’ Association “Top Lady” invitational event took place at Peel on Sunday 10 May when 32 ladies faced a tricky green, made more so by the windy conditions, to battle for the Top Lady title – at least it stayed dry with just a hint of rain at the end.

There were some very close (and long) games during the day so that despite the noon start, play went on till eight in the evening.

Quarter-finals: Ann Hollingworth 21, Ann Gale 11; Gill Dixon 21, Heather Horsburgh 12; Philippa Taylor 21, Lyn Bolton 20; Jenny Moore 21, Clare Cooper 16.

Semi-finals: Ann Hollingworth 21, Gill Dixon 19; Jenny Moore 21, Philippa Taylor 11.The final pitted last year’s winner, Jenny Moore, against Ann Hollingworth. Jenny took an early lead at 11-4 before Ann won the next six ends to go into a 12-11 lead, at which point Jenny upped her game a level to run out the winner, 21-13, and retain her title.

Association president, Pat Robertson, made the presentation thanking everyone who had helped in any way during the afternoon. She thanked the Peel Club, and the ladies who had provided the refreshments.

Greeba Cup

There was an entry of 22 pairs for the Greeba Cup ladies’ doubles played at Marown on Saturday 9 May.

The weather was fine for the afternoon’s play but turned bitterly cold for the latter stages which may partly explain the dearth of spectators staying to watch the final.

Both Semi-finals were close, Paula Firth and Lin Ruscoe coming back from 14-20 down against Mary Kinrade and Ellie Cowell to book their place in the final, while in the other Helen Martin and Kim Hargraves had the better of the early exchanges to hold a 12-7 lead over Tricia Bull and Margaret Tasker. Margaret and Tricia fought back to level 15 across, at which point Helen and Kim scored a 4 before the Port St Mary pair took the next four ends to win.

Semi-finals: Paula Firth and Lin Ruscoe 21, Mary Kinrade and Ellie Cowell 20; Margaret Tasker and Tricia Bull 21, Helen Martin and Kim Hargraves 19

The final could not have been more exciting with Paula and Lin racing to a 16-8 lead before Margsret and Tricia won the next four ends to pull back to 13-16. The PSM pair had the better of the next few ends to level at 19-19. Paula and Lin won the next end to get to “all but” first before Margaret and Tricia dug deep to take the next two ends and the title.

Final: Margaret Tasker and Tricia Bull 21, Paula Firth and Lin Ruscoe 20

The presentation was made by club president Rosie Winckle who thanked the Marown ladies for their help during the afternoon.

Ladies’ over 60’s Thursday 7 May

The weather relented on Thursday and all seven Trend sponsored over 60’s matches went ahead. Peel Sunset led the way with a full house against Breagle, three of the home players winning to single figures. The match at the Villa was a high-scoring affair with all players reaching double figures. The home side had a 4-2 advantage on games though five of the games could have gone either way , Villa winning two of their games to 19 and the two winners for Noble’s, Sonja Lees and Lin Ruscoe, winning to 18. Marown had a 4-2 advantage against Mooragh Park with Mary Black winning to single figures as did Moira Anderson for the visitors. 3-3 was the score in games at Onchan B, But with Jane Teare reaching 18 against Joyce Gardiner and Peggy Griffin getting 19 against Lynda Clarke, together with Ann Gale winning to single figures Bal laugh had a clear win on points. Port Erin had a close match with Douglas, all games going to double figures, the game of the match seeing Patsy Rush just come through 21-20 against Jackie Elliott. Port St Mary A did not have it all their own way at Castletown, winning 4-2 on games with Anne Oates and Marie Ashurst, to single figures, being the two winners for the home side. Wins to single figures by Win Collister and Margaret Tasker gave them a comfortable win on points in the end.

Ladies’ over 60’s Tuesday 5 May

The weather was the winner in the Trend sponsored over 60’s ladies’ league on Tuesday 5 May when only two of the scheduled seven matches took place.

Unfortunately Douglas could only field five players at Noble’s where the home team reached 120 points with Jan Osborne spoiling their party by winning her game to deny them a maximum. In the other game played Castletown had the better of Breagle by 4 games to 2 with Ann Hollingworth and Marie Ashurst winning to single figures. The two winners for the home side were Sylvia Maddrell and and Suzanna Ali while Joyce Henry almost added another game reaching 19 against Sue Peach.

Ladies’ over 60’s Thursday 30 April

There were some close matches in the Trend ladies’ over 60’s league on Thursday 30 April but that was not the case at Port St Mary where the A team extended their lead at the top of the table with a full house against their B team, despite valiant efforts from Roma Ware, reaching 19 against Win Collister, and Edwina Reid who lost out 20-21 to Wendy Kennaugh. Ballaugh also won by a fair margin in a low-scoring match with both teams having two wins to single figures, the highest losing score being 11.At Castletown the match ended level on games, with Villa ending with a four point advantage. It was a similar story at Douglas, level on games with Mooragh Park, but a 4 point win for the home side, while at Noble’s Peel Sunset won 4 games but lost by 6 points. Noble’s registered two 20’s with Lin Ruscoe just losing out to Cath Parker and Flo Price being edged out by Mona Kerruish. Onchan A won 4-2 on games and by 6 points while Onchan B lost 2-4 to Breagle but showed the importance of fighting for every point as they drew on points with Eileen Killey reaching 19 against Kay Primrose-Smith and Barbara Kennaugh losing out 20-21 to Audrey Gardner.

Ladies’ League Friday 1 May

Noble’s were top scorers in the C Tarlton Hodgson sponsored league on Friday 1 May when they visited Marown. Pat Withers and Lil Smith, to single figures, were the two winners for the home side while Joyce Ogden and Clare Cooper also won to single figures for the visitors. Purt le Moirrey could only muster two winners at Ballaugh, although both wins, by Chris Price and Chris Holland, were to single figures, as were three of the Ballaugh wins. There were three single figure wins at Peel, one to the home side and two to the visitors. There were also two games that went all the way, Kim Foy just losing out 20-21 to Joyce Kelly, balanced by Pat Robertson being edged out by Marie Ashurst to the same score. Port St Mary had a 6-3 win on games over South Ramsey with Alison Keggen winning to single figures as did Lyn Bolton for the opposition. The other two matches were closer affairs. Despite being a player short Onchan took six games against Port Erin to win by six points, the game of the match seeing Phil Dobson come through 21-20 against Eileen Thomas. It was a low scoring affair at Douglas with the home side winning two games to single figures and the visitors three. Although they won 6-3 on games Douglas claimed victory by just 5 points.

Sylvia Cashen ladies’ doubles

On a bitterly cold afternoon when the weather threw everything at the players, wind, rain and hail interspersed with sunny periods, a field of 22 pairs gathered at Port St Mary on Wednesday 29 April for the Sylvia Cashen Charity ladies’ doubles.

The weather did not spoil the occasion and there were some close and exciting games with a high standard of bowling on display.

Semi-finals: Marie Ashurst and Kath Kinley 21, Philippa Taylor and Heather Horsburgh 10; Jayne Kneen and Val Macfarlane 21, Chris Price and Rita Callan 9

In the final Val and Jayne played a mark up the side of the green superbly giving their opponents little chance to get in, finally running out 21-10 winners.

President Ann Maddrell made the presentation, pointing out that Val had won the trophy on 13 previous occasions and Jayne on six. She thanked all those who had entered and helped to raise £300+ for the Anti-Cancer (Breast care unit)

Thanks also went to Ray for the condition of the green, to Gill for running the sheet and the ladies’ fo baking cakes and doing the refreshments.

Ladies’ over 60’s Tuesday 28 April

Marown were left wondering whether their journey was really necessary as they travelled south to face Port St Mary A who were in rampant form, winning all six games to record yet another maximum. Villa had a good result against Onchan B, winning 5 games with Muriel Cain winning to single figures, Wendy McDowell being the lone winner for the visitors. Ballaugh also won 5 games, with Voirrey Curphey being Port Erin’s only winner, although Sylvia Shelbourne almost gave them another game reaching 19 against Maureen Trustham. Castletown had two winners at Peel, Anne Oates and Barbara Young who came from behind to pip Rose Corfield 21-20.The five Douglas Players did well to end level on games with Onchan A, but even a big win to single figures by Jan Osborne was not enough to give them parity on points. Noble’s won 4 games at Mooragh Park with two players winning to single figures, as did Lilian Slinger for the home side, to give them a good points advantage while the closest match of the morning was at Breagle where the home side won four games but with Sandi Lowe and Roma Ware reaching 19 for the visitors Breagle ended with just four points advantage.

Pearl Kaighin ladies’ singles

There was a good entry of 32 for the Pearl Kaighin ladies’ singles played at Ballaugh on Saturday 25 April, where the sun shone but the weather stayed cold, particularly for the later stages.

The green was interesting, running well but it helped to have the jack!

Quarter-finals: Sylvia Kennaugh 21, Tricia Bull 14; Philippa Taylor 21, Pat Robertson 16; Lilian Slinger 21, Helen Martin 15; Margaret Tasker 21, Janet Monk 14.

In the semi-finals Margaret found a mark that she played well with Lilian struggling to respond, while the other semi-final was closer with Philippa having the advantage but Sylvia did not give up easily.

Semi-finals: Margaret Tasker 21, Lilian Slinger 11; Philippa Taylor 21, Sylvia Kennaugh 16.

Margaret was in imperious form in the final, playing a long mark then leaving Philippa little room to get in despite her trying everything she could to change the course of the game (I did think turning cart-wheels on the crown a little excessive)

Final: Margaret Tasker 21, Philippa Taylor 9

Club chairman, Jenny Maddrell, thanked those who had entered and those who had stayed to the end before introducing Bernard Kaighin to make the presentation, thanking him for his continued sponsorship of the competition.

Margaret thanked her opponents and everyone responsible for the smooth running of the event
