Ladies Open Age League: A return to playing on the Friday evening of festival week resulted in solid 8-1 home wins for both Castletown A and South Ramsey. Castletown A took on Ballaugh B (176-104) with three of Town’s ladies winning to single figures. Stopping a full house was Alison Millard who won to 8 against Stella Watterson. Closest game saw Chris Price for Castletown having a nip and tuck game against Elaine Fenton before running out 21-17. 

South Ramsey were at home to Castletown B (176-109) with Marie Ashurst stopping the whitewash when she won 21-8 against Gillian Jopson. Sue Kerruish and Rachel Palmer just missed out on wins for the Town ladies when they lost to 19 and 18 respectively against Joyce Ogden and Sue Collier. 

Nobles visited Ballaugh A coming away with a 5-4 win but losing on points (141-148). Julie Reilly and Louise Tebay for Ballaugh plus Jo Kelly for Nobles all won to single figures. Best game of the night saw Grace Gawne for Nobles eventually winning 21-19 after a good tussle with Caroline Parker. Douglas made their way west to Marown B coming away winning 6-3, but losing on points (149-156). Marown’s points total was helped greatly by Rosie Winckle and Celia Joughin winning to 2 and 1. The third winner for the Crosby ladies was Grace Cooper who after a good battle with Mel Molesworth managed to cross the line 21-20. Another 21-20 game saw Nobles Pauline Cowley pip Elaine Dewhirst to the winning post. Peel played host to Breagle Glen B winning the match 6-3 (170-119). Gill Clarke, Jo Corkill, and Louise Horsfall plus Jacqui Elliot for Breagle all won to single figures. The other two wins for Breagle were hard fought games with both Hannah Leece and Jean Thackrah winning 21-20 against Diane Fleming and Emilie Moss with Jean coming back from being 15-5 down to win. The match between Mooragh Park and Marown A has been postponed to a later date.

The British Crown Green Dorothy Piearce Memorial Ladies Doubles qualifier was held on Sunday at Finch Hill Bowling Club with an entry of 10 pairs. The weather was extremely changeable throughout the afternoon but it didn’t deter some excellent bowling being played. Getting through to the semi-finals were Jenny Moore and Fiona Kennish (South Ramsey), Philippa Taylor and Joyce Ogden (Marown/South Ramsey), Louise Tebay and Maria Dimsdale (Ballaugh), plus Helen Withers and Lyn Bolton (Marown). 

The first semi-final pitted Jenny and Fiona against Philippa and Joyce with the South pair progressing through with a comfortable 21-9 win. Second semi-final was a tighter affair with Helen and Lyn eventually overcoming the challenge of Louise and Maria to win 21-18. 

In the final, Jenny and Fiona were first out of the blocks and maintaining their momentum won 21-10. Many congratulations to Jenny and Fiona on their win.  It is hoped both Jenny and Fiona, and Helen and Lyn will represent the Isle of Man at the Dorothy Piearce Finals being held on Saturday 9 August at Dudley Dell, Staffordshire. Thanks to Finch Hill Bowling Club for the use of their green and providing refreshments throughout the afternoon and to Chris Holland, Ladies Competition Secretary and her team on the smooth running of the competition.

Open Age League: Last Friday evening Castletown A consolidated their lead at the halfway stage with a good 8-1 win (185-81) at home to Douglas; result was helped by five of Town’s games being won to single figures. Lone winner for Douglas was Paula Garrett who won to 17 against Hannah Drewett. Nobles hosted Ballaugh B winning 7-2 (176-127). Jo Smith, Colese Creer and Joanne Kelly all won to 8 for Nobles while the two winners for Ballaugh were Maggie Hughes and Sandra Buckeridge who won to 12 and 17 respectively. Marown A travelled south to Breage Glen A coming away losing on games (5-4) but winning on points (151-153). Caroline Whitehead for Breagle and Clare Cooper for the Crosby ladies both won to single figures. Closest game of the match saw Breagle’s Pauline Worrall cross the finish line 21-19 against Philippa Taylor. Ballaugh A were at home to neighbours South Ramsey winning 6-3 on games (163-152). South’s Kim Hargraves was the only player to win her game to single figures whilst the closest game saw South’s Jenny Moore just pip Rose Waterworth 21-20.   Mooragh Park  were at home against Castletown B winning the match 7-2 (160-106).  Two winners for Castletown were Marie Ashurst who won to 1 and Joy Stephen who won to 12. Mooragh’s Bailey McMullan had a nip and tuck game with Rachel Palmer eventually winning 21-17. Breagle Glen B travelled to Marown B losing 5-4 on games and points (144-128). Grace Cooper and Enya Christian for Marown plus Alison Stockham and Jacqui Elliott for Breagle all won to single figures. Closest scoring game resulted in a 21-15 win for Marown’s Jo Kelly against Hannah Leece.

Over 60s league: Last Tuesday morning (10 June) Nobles maintained their lead in the over 60’s league with a three all draw away to Mooragh Park A but winning on points (92-102). Nobles score was helped by Sylvia Kennaugh and Sue Gawne winning their games to single figures. Paula Garrett for Noble’s just missed out on a win for her team when she lost to 18 against Lynn Myers. Breagle Glen A put in a strong home performance scoring a maximum against Finch Hill (126-80).  All games went into double figures with Breagle’s Caroline Whitehead having a good tussle with Lil Smith eventually winning 21-16. Castletown A made their way to Peel coming away with a three all draw but winning on points (114-91). Kath Kinley for Town was the only player to win her game to single figures with the three winners for Peel all winning 21-17. Marown put in a solid away performance at Castletown B winning 5-1 (120-58) with four of Marown’s wins being won to single figures.  Saving a whitewash was Marie Ashurst who won to 15 against Gill Christian. Ballaugh A hosted neighbours South Ramsey B winning 5-1 (113-86). Brenda Bowyer for Ballaugh plus Sue Collier for South won their games to single figures while Anne Buck just missed out on winning another game for South when she lost to 17 against Carol Holt. Breagle Glen B travelled to Onchan winning 4-2 on games but losing on points (101-97). Maureen Payne for Onchan and Jacqui Elliot for Breagle won their games to single figure while the closest game of the match saw Jean Thackrah eventually winning to 19 against Caroline Heathcote. Steph Swift for Breagle and Lynda Brew for Mooragh had a nip and tuck game with Lynda just taking the game 21-19. Win Collister (Breagle) and Mary Bruce (Mooragh) both won to single figures. Last Thursday morning saw three maximums being scored. First of these was Ballaugh A at home to Mooragh Park B (126-40). Only one game went into double figures when Barbara Graham won to 11 against Peggy Freeman. Second maximum was by Mooragh Park A at home to South Ramsey B (126-56) which was helped by three of Mooragh’s wins being won to single figures. Highest scoring game saw South’s Georgina Bellamy lose to 13 against Lynn Myers. Third maximum of the morning was scored by Nobles away to Onchan (126-63). Dee Lewis and Sue Gawne won their games to singles figures whilst Onchan just missed on a win when Caroline Heathcote lost to 17 against Marilyn Ellison.  Marown travelled the short distance to Peel coming away with a three all draw but winning on points (86-91). Joyce Kelly and Terry Berry for Peel, plus Lyn Bolton and Philippa Taylor for Marown all won to single figures. Closest game saw Peel’s Beverely Wilson cross the line 21-14 against Gill Christian. Breagle Glen A put in a good home performance against Castletown A winning 4-2 (116-97). Caroline Whitehead for Breagle was the only player to win to single figures. Trish Bull for Breagle had a good battle with Kath Kinley eventually winning the game 21-19. Breagle Glen B travelled to Castletown B putting in a solid performance winning 5-1 (119-74). Voirrey Curphey for Breagle was the only player to win to single figures whilst the highest scoring game resulted in a 21-15 win for Breagle’s Angela Bennett against Marie Ashurst. South Ramsey A were at home to neighbours Ballaugh B winning 5-1 (119-67). Saving the whitewash was Brenda Bowyer who won to 14 against Judy Kelly. Friday morning resulted in a solid 5-1 home win for Breagle Glen C against Finch Hill (114-79). Breagle’s Roz Cannon an Kay Primrose-Smith plus Finch’s lone winner, Brenda Williams, all won to single figures. A very close game saw Edwina Reid for Breagle win to 20 against Iris Kermode.

Ladies Open Age: Friday evening’s match between Ballaugh A and B resulted in a full house for the A team (189-90) with five of their wins being won to single figures. The B team just missed out on a win when Sandra Buckeridge lost to 19 against Gail Corrin. Two other close games saw Elena Dimsdale win 21-17 against Elaine Fenton and Rose Waterworth winning to 16 against Julie Cannon. Castletown A also put in a strong performance when they made the short journey to Breagle Glen B coming away with maximum points (189-97). Town’s Hilary Kermode had a good battle against Ros Cannon eventually winning to 19 whilst Kim Foy, Tracy Moore and Amanda Lawler all won to single figures. Nobles visited neighbours Douglas winning 6-3 and by 28 points (140-168). Jo Smith and Sue Gawne for Nobles plus Paula Garrett for Douglas all won their games to single figures. Douglas’s Erin Quayle had a good tussle with Tina Hampson winning 21-20 with Jo Kelly for Nobles winning to the same score against Katie Jacobs. Breagle Glen A were away to Castletown B winning 5-4 and by 17 points (157-140). Breagle’s Nicci Cain plus Town’s Jo Robert both won to single figures with Melody Marsh and Marie Ashurst for Town and Breagle’s Kay Primrose-Smith all having tough games before winning to 14, 18 and 16 respectively against Chris Holland, Chrissy Woodward and Sue Kerruish. Marown A put in a solid performance at home against Peel winning 6-3 (173-98) with four of the Crosby ladies wins being won to single figures. Three winners for Peel were Mary Moffatt who won to 17 against Grace Cooper; Louise Horsfall who won to 11 against Philippa Taylor and Shirley Corrin who won to 19 against Lyn Bolton. South Ramsey were at home against neighbours Mooragh Park winning the match 6-3 (156-116). Lauren Groen, Sue Collier and Fiona Kennish for South plus Mooragh’s Bailey and Lacey McMullan all won to single figures. The third winner for Mooragh was the other McMullan sister, Madison, who pipped Joyce Ogden to the post 21-18. Rearranged match from fixture 9 between Peel at home to Mooragh Park was played on Tuesday 27 May resulting in a 5-4 win for Peel (163-146). Mooragh’s Madison McMullan was the only player to win to single figures with Celia Smith for Peel just missing out on another win for her team when she lost to 20 against Bailey McMullan.

Ladies Open Age League: Last Wednesday’s fixtures saw two of the top teams play each other when Marown A hosted Castletown A. Castletown came away with a 5-4 win but lost the match by one point only (149-148) with Crosby’s Rebecca Teare plus Hilary Kermode for Town both winning their games to single figures. Two close games resulted in a 21-19 win for Town’s Kim Foy against Philippa Taylor, and a 21-20 win for Marown’s Jayne Smith against Tracy Moore. South Ramsey scored their second maximum of the season to date, at home to Peel (189-98) with Kim Hargraves, Jenny Moore and Sue Collier all winning to single figures. Peel’s Beverely Wilson just missed out a win for her team when after a good nip and tuck game she lost to 20 against Joyce Ogden. South’s Gillian Jopson also had a long tussle with Louise Horsfall eventually winning to 14. Ballaugh A were also on good form when they won 7-2 at home against Douglas dropping only eight points (181-129). Two winners for Douglas were Emma Sayle who won to 19 against Barbara Graham and Katie Jacobs who won to 15 against Cath Harvey. Louise Tebay had a good battle against Douglas’s Erin Quayle eventually crossing the line 21-20. Ballaugh’s Maria and Elena Dimsdale (mother and daughter), both won their games to single figures. Breagle Glen B put in a solid performance when they won 6-3 at home to Ballaugh B (177-145). Roz Cannon for Breagle was the only player to win to single figures with Breagle’s Claire Cain plus Ballaugh’s Charlotte Neesom both winning their games 21-20 against Victoria Johnson and Elaine Hawkins respectively. Castletown B were at home to Marown B winning 5-4 and by twenty points (171-151). Castletown B just missed out on two more wins when Sue Wilshaw and Melody Marsh both lost to 20 against Lisa Pugh and Grace Cooper. Only player to win to single figures was Town’s Marie Ashurst who won to 9. Breagle Glen A made their way north to Mooragh Park with the home team winning 6-3 (161-138). Three winners for Breagle were Voirrey Curphey who won to 19 against Katie Johnson with Katy Williams and Pauline Worrall who both won to single figures. The McMullan sisters for Mooragh (Lacey, Madison and Bailey) put in good performances to win their games to 12, 11 and 12. 

Friday evening’s matches: Home derby between Marown B & A resulted in an impressive full house for the A team (189-98) with five of the games being won to single figures. ‘B’s Lil Smith and Rosie Winkle nearly stopped the whitewash when they lost to 19 and 17 against Debbie Leece and Rebekah Kelly. Another solid performance saw Peel win 7-2 at home against Castletown B dropping only six points (183-120) with the score for Peel being helped by Louise Horsfall and Emilie Moss both winning their games to single figures. Two winners for Town were Joy Stephens who won to 16 against Gill Clarke and Judith Moore who won to 20 against Diane Fleming. Two other 21-20 wins were scored by Peel’s Shirley Corrin and Terry Berry against Marie Ashurst and Sue Wilshaw. Nobles played host to Breagle Glen B winning 5-4 on games but losing the match on points (143-157). Breagle’s Chrissy Woodward had a good battle with Jo Smith eventually getting the point she needed to win 21-20. Another very close game resulted in a 21-20 win for Noble’s Marilyn Ellison against Angela Bennett. Rearranged match from Friday 9 May between Marown A vs Nobles took place last Thursday resulting in a strong home performance by the Crosby ladies winning 6-3 and dropping only eight points (181-139).  Marown just missed out on another couple of wins when Jayne Smith and Rebecca Teare both lost to 19 against Tina Hampson and Jo Smith. Best game of the match was between Rebekah Kelly (Marown) and Joanne Kelly with Rebekah just edging it 21-20.

Ladies Over 60’s league: Last Tuesday morning saw Peel record a maximum at home against Mooragh Park B (126-37). Only two of the six games went into double figures when Mooragh’s Lynda Brew and Margaret Oxley scored 11 and 10 respectively. Castletown A continued with their good form winning 5-1 away at Onchan dropping only one point (125-61) with three of Town’s wins being won to single figures. Stopping the full house and after an extremely good game was Maureen Payne who won to 20 against Jenny Saunders. Current leaders, Nobles, also had a good 4-2 away win at South Ramsey B (108-72). South’s two winners were Ann Gale who won to 16 against Paula Firth and Sue Collier who won to single figures against Libby Andrade. Sue Gawne and Marilyn Ellison for Nobles both had good wins winning to single figures. Finch Hill travelled to Castletown B coming away with a solid 5-1 win (120-100). All games went into double figures with Finch’s Iris Kermode having a nip and tuck battle with Sheila Preston before crossing the line 21-19. Breagle Glen A put in a solid performance at home against Ballaugh A winning 4-2 and by twenty points (115-95). Again all games in this match went into double figures. Two winners for Ballaugh were Pat Mason who won to 16 against Linda Dawson and Christine McDonald who won to 15 against Alison Stockham. Closest game of the match saw Margie Tasker win to 17 against Ballaugh’s Kay McKiernan. Ballaugh B were at home to Breagle Glen B; match finished three all with Ballaugh winning on points (112-103). Carol Holt for Ballaugh was the only player to win to single figures with Angela Bennett for Breagle just getting the better of Brenda Clayton winning 21-20. Marown made their way to Mooragh Park winning 4-2 and by 14 points (86-100). Two winners for Mooragh were Janet Monk who won to single figures against Mair Moore and Gillian Malpass who won to 13 against Celia Joughin, with Marown’s Lynda Cadamy and Philippa Taylor both winning to single figures. The following morning (Wednesday) South Ramsey A put in a strong performance away to Beagle Glen C winning 5-1 dropping only three points (123-68). Stopping a whitewash was Chris Holland who won to 18 against Gillian Jopson. 

Thursday morning’s fixtures saw three of the top four teams score maximum points. First was Breagle Glen A away to Mooragh Park B (126-43). Only one game went into double figures when Mooragh’s Joan Henderson put in a sterling performance against Caroline Whitehead before losing to 13. Second maximum was scored by Ballaugh A at home against Breagle Glen C (126-63). Christine McDonald for Ballaugh was the only player to win to single figures with Breagle’s Chris Holland and Wyn Collister putting up a good fight before they both lost to 14 against Beryl Bridson and Kay McKiernan. Third maximum was scored by Nobles at home against Ballaugh B (126-38). All games, apart from one, were won to single figures with Ballaugh’s Carol Holt just creeping into double figures losing to 11 against Dee Lewis. Second placed Castletown A were at home to their B Team winning 5-1, only dropping four points (122-73). Stopping the full house was Marie Ashurst who won to 17 against Barbara Young with Kath Kinley for the A team being the only player to win to single figures. Lone winner for Ballaugh was Gail Curphey who won to 19 against Sue Peach. Onchan put in a solid performance winning 5- 1 at home and dropping only five points against Mooragh Park B (121-48). Four of Onchan’s wins were won to single figures with lone winner for Mooragh, Mary Bruce, winning her game to 16 against Anne Bannan. Nobles ladies also put in a good home performance against Breagle Glen B winning 5-1 and dropping five points (121-68). Saving the whitewash was Pauline Worrall who won to 16 against Jane Robinson. Marown travelled to South Ramsey B coming away with a 5-1 win dropping eight points (65-118). Four of Marown’s wins were won to single figures with Sue Collier being the lone winner for South winning to 13 against Celia Joughin. Mooragh Park A hosted Finch Hill with the match finishing three all, but Mooragh winning on points (112-100). Mooragh just missed out on two more wins when Karen Bentley and Gillian Malpass lost to 19 and 18 against Brenda Williams and Wendy Cowin. Breagle Glen C made their way to Peel coming away with a three all draw but losing on points (106-85). Joyce Kelly and Shirley Corrin for Peel both won to single figures, with Breagle’s Dot Mylchreest crossing the line 21-15 against Beverly Wilson. South Ramsey A travelled south losing 4-2 to an on-form  Breagle Glen A (116-97). Judy Kelly just missed out on making the match three all when she lost to 20 against Alison Stockham.

Val Alwood just missed out on another win for Peel when she lost to 19 against Rose Waterworth. Castletown A had a good 5-1 home win against Mooragh Park A (109-58). Lil Smith and Wendy Cowin for Finch, plus Onchan’s only winner Maureen Payne all won to single figures. The following morning (Friday) local derby between Breagle Glen C and A resulted in a 4-2 win for the A team dropping only three points (90-123). Margie Tasker and Trish Bull nearly made it a full house when they narrowly lost to 19 and 20 against Chris Holland and Gwen Tuck. Caroline Whitehead for the A team was the only player to win to single figures.

Ladies Open age League: Last Thursday evening, local derby between Castletown A and B saw the A ladies score maximum points (189-92). Stella Watterson, Hilary Kermode and Hannah Drewett for the A team won their games to single figures with Amanda Lawler and Kim Foy (A) both winning to 16 after good battles against Rachel Palmer and Sue Peach. On Friday evening, South Ramsey travelled to Crosby coming away with a solid 7-2 win against Marown B dropping only two points (114-187). Joyce Ogden, Gill Dixon and Lauren Groen for South all won to single figures. Two winners for Marown, after hard fought games, were Emily Cooper and Rosie Winckle who both won to 20 against Kim Hargraves and Gillian Jopson. Ballaugh A made their way south to Breagle Glen A winning 6-3 (175-144). Elena Dimsdale and Caroline Parker for Ballaugh just missed out on winning their games when they lost to 20 and 19 against Caroline Whitehead and Mavis Franks. Christine McDonald and Michele Cubbon for Ballaugh were the only two players to win their games to single figures. Douglas played host to Breagle Glen B winning 5-4 and by eight points (152-144). Mel Molesworth and Paula Garrett for Douglas plus Angie Bennett and Hannah Leece for Breagle all won to single figures with Douglas’s Harley Garrett just crossing the line 21-18 against Molly Howland. Matches between Marown A vs Nobles and Peel vs Mooragh Park have been rearranged for Thursday 22 May and Tuesday 27 May respectively.

Jean Kelly Competition: The quarterfinals of the Jean Kelly competition were played on Thursday evening (handicaps and points are in brackets). Castletown A (+20) were at home to Mooragh Park (+50) winning the match 8-1 (207-165). Lone winner for Mooragh was Janet Monk who won to 19 against Kath Kinley. Elaine Slack for Mooragh put up a good fight against Jenny Saunders before losing to 16 with Chris Price and Amanda Lawler for Town both winning to single figures. Breagle Glen A (+25) also put in a good performance at home to Peel (+58) winning 8-1 (210-187). Sole winner for Peel was Emilie Moss who won to 17 against Pauline Worrall. Helen Cowley and Jo Corkill just missed out on two more wins for Peel when they both lost to 18 against Linda Dawson and Trish Bull. Another solid home performance saw Ballaugh A (+23) win 7-2 (201-183) against Nobles (+44). Noble’s Lisa Bradshaw and Marilyn Ellison just missed out on winning their games when they both lost to 20 against Caroline Parker and Elena Dimsdale. Two winners for Nobles were Sylvia Kennaugh and Dee Lewis who won to 17 and 14. Closest match of the night saw South Ramsey (+17) take on Marown A (+13) at home losing 3-6 and by 10 points (155-165). South’s Fiona Kennish and Jenny Moore plus Rebecca Teare and Clare Cooper for Marown all won to single figures. Closest game saw Marown’s Jayne Smith having a good battle with Kim Hargraves eventually crossing the line to win 21-17.

Ladies Open Age league: Friday evening saw another two maximums scored. First was by Ballaugh A at home against Breagle Glen B with five of Ballaugh’s wins being won to single figures. Closest game saw Breagle’s Jean Thackrah losing to 17 against Sherry Pedley. Second maximum was by Marown A at home to Ballaugh B with six games being won to single figures. Ballaugh’s Karen Young put in a good effort against Rebekah Kelly before losing to 13. Nobles travelled to Castletown B coming away with a 6-3 win. Town’s Susan Kerruish plus Libby Andrade for Noble’s won to single figures with Noble’s Marilyn Ellison having a nip and tuck game against Rachel Palmer eventually winning to 18. Mooragh Park were at home to Marown B winning 5-4 on games although the match could have ended 7-2 as Mooragh’s Joy Morris and Katie Johnson both lost to 20 against Elaine Dewhirst and Grace Cooper. Maureen Hamilton for Mooragh was the only player to win to single figures. Castletown A made their way north to South Ramsey A and although Town won 5-4 on games they lost by five points (149-144). Two closest games saw Sue Collier and Kim Hargraves for South both losing to 20 against Tracy Moore and Hannah Drewett. Breagle Glen A had a solid 7-2 win at home against Peel with four of Breagle’s wins plus one of Peel’s being won to single figures. Lynda Wilson for Peel had a good tussle with Mavis Franks winning the game 21-17.

Ladies Over 60 league: Last Tuesday morning, 4-2 on games seemed to be the tone when five out of the 8 matches played were won to this figure. First was Nobles winning 4-2 at home against Castletown A. Paula Garrett for Nobles won her game to single figures with Town’s Hilary Kermode just getting the better of Sue Gawne winning 21-20. Onchan won 4-2 at home to a two-player short Breagle Glen C. Chris Holland and Susan Inch were the two winners for Breagle winning their games to 17 and 12. Finch Hill visited South Ramsey B coming away with a 4-2 win. Two winners for South were Anne Buck and Sue Collier who won to 14 and 2 with Finch’s Wendy Cowin having a good game against Julie Stephens winning 21-17. Mooragh Park B visited neighbours Ballaugh B and although Mooragh won 4-2, they lost the match by 12 points. Two winners for Ballaugh were Brenda Bowyer and Alison Millard who both won to single figures, with Mooragh’s Diane Robinson and Peggy Freeman both winning their games to 18. Marown travelled south to Breagle Glen B coming away with a 4-2 win. Jacqui Elliott and Gwen Tuck were the two winners for Breagle winning to 19 and 18, with Marown’s Lynda Cadamy crossing the line 21-19 against Voirrey Curphey. Breagle Glen A put in a solid away performance at Castletown B winning 5-1. Lone winner for Town was Elaine McElroy who won to 19 against Margie Tasker with Breagle’s Caroline Whitehead winning her game to single figures. South Ramsey A travelled west to Peel coming away with a three all draw and winning by two points. Closest game saw South’s Lorraine Moore just pip Joyce Kelly 21-20 with Peel’s Mary Moffatt winning to single figures. Closest match of the morning was Mooragh Park A at home to Ballaugh A. Match finished three all, but Ballaugh took the win by only one point. Mooragh’s Janet Monk plus Julie Reilly for Ballaugh both won their games to single figures with Ballaugh’s Christine McDonald crossing the line 21-18 against Maureen Hamilton. Thursday morning’s matches saw Castletown A and Ballaugh A both score maximum points at home against South Ramsey B and Onchan respectively. Castletown A’s Barbara Young, Kath Kinley and Hilary Kermode won their games to single figures with South’s Ann Gale, Sue Collier and Anne Buck losing to 18,19 and 18. The only player to win to single figures in the Ballaugh A vs Onchan match was Ballaugh’s Pat Mason who won to 5. Closest game saw Ballaugh’s Christine McDonald win 21-17 against Maureen Payne. Home derby between Mooragh Park B and ‘A’ resulted in a 5-1 win for the A team. Sole winner for the ‘B’ team was Mary Bruce who won to 13 against Karen McGurgan with Lynn Mayers and Janet Monk for the ‘A’ team winning to single figures. South Ramsey A had a good 4-2 home win against Breagle Glen B. Two winners for Breagle were Jean Thackrah who won to 17 against Lorraine Moore and Angela Bennett who had a good game against Helen Caley eventually winning 21-20. South’s Jill Quayle was the only player to win to single figures. Nobles made their way to Marown coming away with a 4-2 win. Noble’s Libby Andrade and Jo Smith, plus Marown’s Rosie Winkle all won their games to single figures with Celia Joughin for the Crosby ladies winning to 18 against Marilyn Ellison. Breagle Glen A played host to Peel winning the match 4-2. Breagle’s Linda Dawson had a close game with Shirley Corrin with Linda eventually crossing the line 21-20. Two other close games saw Peel’s Joyce Kelly and Breagle’s Mavis Franks both winning 21-18 against Caroline Whitehead and Mary Moffatt. Finch Hill played host to Ballaugh B winning the match 4-2. Lil Smith, Anne Hon and Wendy Cowin for Finch plus Alison Millard for Ballaugh all won to single figures with Brenda Bowyer just pipping Finch’s Brenda Williams 21-18. Friday morning resulted in a three all draw between Breagle Glen C at home to Castletown B. Ros Cannon for Breagle was the only player to win to single figures with Chris Holland just missing out on another win for Breagle when she lost to 19 against Linda Dobinson.

Jean Kelly Knockout competition: (Handicaps in brackets) The prelim rounds of the Jean Kelly knockout competition were played last Thursday night. Marown B (+46) were at home to Mooragh Park A (+45). Mooragh put in a solid performance winning 7-2 on games, points 214-158. Janet Monk, Bailey and Madison McMullen for Mooragh, plus Grace Cooper for Marown all won to single figures. Breagle Glen B (+48) played host Marown  (+18). Marown put in a strong performance winning the match 9-0, (207-115). Six of Marown’s wins were won to single figures with the closest game being Breagle’s Jean Thackrah losing to 15 against Debbie Leece. South Ramsey (+15) travelled to Douglas (+46)  winning 7-2, (169-190) with three of South’s games being won to single figures. Best game of the match was between South’s Gill Dixon and Paula Garrett with Gill just crossing the line 21-20. Nobles (+24) were at home to Castletown B (+62) resulting in a 7-2 win for the Nobles Ladies, (205-180). Two winners for Castletown were Marie Ashurst and Barbara Young who won to 19 and 15 with Grace Gawne and Paula Firth for Noble’s also having tough games winning to 16 and 17 respectively. Castletown A (+20) put in a solid performance away to Ballaugh B (+57) winning 7-2 on games (203-166). Town’s Jenny Saunders, Tracy Moore and Hilary Kermode all won to single figures, with Ballaugh’s Julie Cannon just missing out on a win for Ballaugh when she lost to 16 against Kellie Maddrell.

Over 60’s league: There were two extremely close matches in last Thursday’s Over 60’s fixtures. First of these saw Peel Sunset win their match against Mooragh A 4-2 and by one point (97-96). The two winners for Mooragh were Janet Monk and Lynn Mayers who won to 6 and 7 with Lynda Wilson (Peel) also winning her game to 9. Peel’s Mary Moffatt and Beverley Wilson had tough battles against Chris Sims and Karen McGurgan respectively with the Peel ladies both crossing the line 21-16. Second close match saw Marown visit Finch Hill coming away with a 3 all result but winning the match by two points (90-92). Four of the games were won to single figures – two to Finch and two to Marown. Closest game resulted in a 21-16 win for Finch’s Elaine Vincent against Celia Joughin. Breagle Glen A scored their best result to date when they won 4-2 at home against Ballaugh B scoring 121 to Ballaugh’s 76. Kay Primrose-Smith nearly made it 5-1 to Breagle when she lost to 20 against Brenda Bowyer. Ballaugh A were at home to Nobles winning 4-2 on games and by nine points (108-99). Paula Firth and Marilyn Ellison were the two winners for Nobles winning to 14 and 10. Closest games resulted in 21-17 wins for Ballaugh’s Christine McDonald and Michelle Cubbon. South Ramsey A played Castletown A with the northerners winning 4-2 on games and by 23 points (108-85). Helen Caley and Joyce Ogden for South both won to single figures with Elaine Moore (South) having a nip and tuck game with Hilary Kermode before eventually winning to 15. Castletown B played host to Onchan winning the match 4-2 and by six points (100-94). Caroline Heathcote nearly made the match three all when she lost to 20 against Pat Rigby. Castletown’s Elaine McElroy and Judith Moore plus Onchan’s Wendy McDowell all won to single figures. Breagle Glen B travelled north to Mooragh Park B coming away with a 4-2 win (74-106). Two winners for Mooragh were Joy Morris and Joan Henderson who won to 12 and 10 respectively, with Breagle’s Angela Bennett, Pauline Worrall and Voirrey Curphey winning to 5, 6 and 2. The following morning (Friday) South Ramsey B made their way south to Breagle Glen C. Match finished 4-2 (100-75) to Breagle with three games to Breagle and two to South being won to single figures. Closest game was between Breagle’s Joan Ryder and Liz Ten Donkelaar with Joan just crossing the line 21-17.

Open Age League: Only two teams managed to score in the 170’s in last Friday evening’s fixtures. The first was Breagle Glen A away to Nobles. Match finished 6-3 to Breagle (points 178-109). Mavis Franks, Tricia Bull and Voirrey Curphey for Breagle all won to single figures, with Dee Lewis, Marilyn Ellison and Colese Creer for Nobles winnning to 17, 18 and 17 respectively. Second highest scoring team of the night was Ballaugh A who won 7-2 on games (176-128) away to Marown B. Rose Waterworth for Ballaugh plus Marown’s Lil Smith both won to single figures. Barbara Graham for Ballaugh just missed out on a win for Ballaugh when she lost to 20 against Grace Cooper. South Ramsey A made their second visit of the week to Douglas coming away with a 6-3 win (162-132). Sue Collier and Jenny Moore for South won their games to single figures with Melanie Smith just missing out on a win for Douglas losing to 19 against Gill Morgan. Breagle Glen were at home to Castletown B  winning 5-4 on games (164-135). Breagle’s Angela Bennett and Jean Thackrah won their games to 6 and 8, whilst Town’s Sue Peach and Jo Robert both had tough games coming through to win 21-19 and 21-18. Mooragh Park travelled to neighbours Ballaugh B coming away with a 6-3 win (160-139). Mooragh’s Madison McMullan and Janet Monk plus Ballaugh’s Yvonne Ward won to 4, 7 and 6 respectively. Ballaugh’s Karen Young, Alison Millard and Sherriee Pedley just missed out on winning their games when they lost to 18, 19 and 18. Castletown A were at home to Peel winning 7-2 on games (167-122) with Alison Kearsley and Hannah Drewett for ‘Town’ plus Shirley Corrin for Peel winning to single figures. A nip and tuck game saw Anne Oates for Castletown just pip Gill Clarke 21-20.  

British Merit Qualifier: The British Merit Qualifier was played at Finch Hill on Sunday afternoon attracting an entry of 21 lady bowlers. Getting through to the semi-finals were Hannah Drewett (Castletown) who beat Lil Smith (Marown); Fiona Kennish (South Ramsey) winning to 15 against Marown’s Helen Withers;  Debbie Leece (Marown) winning to 20 in a hard fought game against Louise Tebay (Ballaugh), and Marown’s Clare Cooper who beat her daughter Grace 21-13. In the semi-finals, Hannah and Debbie were too strong for their opponents with Hannah winning to 7 against Fiona and Debbie winning to 9 against Clare. The final, as expected, was keenly contested with the score tied 12 all after 10 ends. The next three ends saw Hannah take a slight lead 13-12, but not one to give up Debbie piled on the pressure eventually running out 21-14 after 17 ends. Many congratulations to Debbie on her win and also to Hannah who between them treated the spectators to a great final of bowling. Debbie with possibly Hannah will represent the Isle of Man at the British Merit Championships being held at Littleover BC, Derbyshire, on Saturday 5th July.
