Moore & Teare Win Apollo Blinds Mixed Pairs

The 2025 Apollo mixed doubles comp was held at Finch Hill  in sunny & windy conditions the threat of Storm Floris did not deter the 22 entries. The Preliminary round saw Jamie Box and Debbie Leece (Marown) off to a flying start – “home-greeners” Les Brookes & Lil Smith, Peter Woods & Anne Hon had mixed fortunes with the latter pair narrowly missing out gaining six points when all-but against.

In round one the enthusiastic youngsters Grayse & Martha Blencoe (Mooragh Park) put up a creditable performance against the maturity of Les & Lil; surprise upset when youngsters Sam Quayle & Lacey McMullan (Castleotwn/Mooragh Park) narrowly progressed against the experience of Sid Bolton & Clare Cooper (Marown). Jamie & Debbie’s pairing again triumphed against the in-form Kim Hargraves and Alan Moore (South Ramsey) Willie & Pauline Cowley (Douglas/Ballaugh) saw off the runner up of Saturday’s competition – Brian Kelly & Sue Gawne (Marown/Nobles).

Calmer conditions had set in by the time of the quarter finals which saw two close fought games with remaining” home-greeners” Les & Lil winning by two points over Willie & Pauline and Sam & Lacey by three points over Steve & Judy Kelly (South Ramsey). Although hard fought, in the two other matches James Teare & Jenny Moore and Jamie & Debbie sailed comfortably into the semi-finals.

At the bottom half of the draw the good form of James & Jenny proved too strong for Les & Lil; in the top half of the draw Jamie & Debbie’s accuracy ended Sam & Lacey’s afternoon adventure.

The final was hard fought affair with Jamie & Debbie closing in on the eventual winners whilst they were standing at “all-but” for five ends finally the final bowl of the 20th end clinched it.

Congratulations to James Teare & Jenny Moore on their victory. Thank you to Chris Reynolds of Apollo Blinds for support & sponsorship; to Joyce Ogden for her competent management of the event and to all Finch Hill members who helped and provided the refreshments.

Hargraves & Kelly Win Derek Killey Memorial Mixed Pairs

Last Saturday, 2nd August saw Onchan Bowling Club host the Derek Killey Memorial Charity Trophy for mixed doubles. The weather was excellent for the 22 teams who entered.

The final was played between Sue Gawne and Brian Kelly (Nobles/Marown) against Kim Hargraves and Dido Kelly (South Ramsey) with both pairs having played the extra game in the preliminary round.

Jenny Moore and James Teare (South Ramsey), considered strong contenders, were narrowly defeated in the first round by Mike Spooner and Julie Riley (Ballaugh) with a score of 21-18, after Spooner and Riley secured three points on the final end.

Three very close games were contested in the quarter finals with Gawne, and Kelly winning over Breagle Glen pair Anita and Wayne Roberts 21-19. Spooner and Riley couldn’t quite repeat their first round going down this time 18-21 to Debbie Leece and Jamie Box (Marown).

In the third quarter final Rose and Tom Waterworth (Ballaugh) edged out Cherise Fiahlo and Matthew Keggen 21-19 (Marown). In the last quarter final Hargraves and Kelly had a decisive win over Ballaugh’s Edward Trustham and Michele Cubbon 21-8.

The first semi-final was a close game at 11-11 until Gawne and Kelly picked up a single, three two’s and a three to beat Leece and Box 21-11. In the other semi-final the Waterworth’s were leading 15-9 over Hargraves and Kelly then lost a four, three singles, a two and finally a three going down 9-21.

In the final Hargraves and Dido Kelly were leading 16-6 after just seven ends played (with 5 handicap). Gawne and Brian Kelly took four points in the next three ends to make it 10-16 but Hargraves and Kelly replied with the same scores in the next three ends to make it 20-10. Once again Gawne and Kelly replied with singles on the next three ends to make it 13-20 but ran out of steam going down 21-13.

The presentation of the trophy and prize money was made by Onchan Bowling Clubs President Kevin Quirk who congratulated the finalists and thanked those who had helped to run the competition.

The winners and runners up kindly donated their winnings to this years charity which is the Parkinsons Disease Society Isle of Man. This added to the entrance fees, catering profit and a donation from the club came to £400.  A big thank you to all who entered.

Ballapaws Ladies Doubles Won by Tebay & Dimsdale

The sun came out, the rain stayed away and with yachts in the bay for ‘Seafest’, the setting couldn’t be beaten for the final Ladies Doubles Competition of the season, the Ballapaws Trophy at Peel Sunset Bowling Club.

An entry of 15 pairs meant 7 prelim’s, with Mary Moffatt and Joyce Kelly being the only pair with a drawn entry to the Quarter Finals. The hard work of the greenkeepers at Peel had paid off as today the green was running well and as a result, all the bowling was high quality with close ends and each point being fiercely fought over.

Unfortunately, none of the home greener’s made it past the quarter finals – we’ll try again next year to bring the trophy home.

The first semi-final was Louise Tebay and Maria Dimsdale against Linda Cadamy and Sue Gawne. Both pairs were on top form and the match was close, but, with the play technique of Louise taking the lead and instructing Maria to “knock ‘em up”, they came out winners 21-16.

The second semi-final saw the pairing of Paula Firth and Sylvia Kennaugh against Philippa Taylor and Joyce Ogden. Allegedly playing together for the first time in 4 years (although you wouldn’t have thought that), Paula and Sylvia took an early lead to 16. Philippa and Joyce weren’t letting it go so easy and having won control of the jack, clawed their way back to 17 across. However, Paula and Sylvia dug deep to win the next 3 ends and the match, 21-17.

The final was all set, and what a match – it was nip and tuck all the way with both pairs taking turns to lead but the “knock ‘em out” team of Louise and Maria stole the show 21-18. Paula and Sylvia left with smiles on their faces for a rekindled partnership.

Thank you to the sponsors, Ballapaws Boarding Kennels, for their continued support and thank you to all who helped on the day; measuring, marking, making brew’s etc. An enjoyable day for all and best of all, lots of laughs and smiles on the green.

Taylor wins Julia North Trophy

After a few years hiatus, on a warm and sometimes wet afternoon, Marown Bowling club held the Julia North Ladies Singles competition. With an entry of 20 bowlers there were some great games that were all played in lovely spirits, with the competition sponsored by Debbie Does Nails. All of the home green Ladies started off 5 with everyone else off 6.

The quarter final stage was a bit of ballaugh versus Marown, which saw Rose Waterworth 21 ended Lisa Pugh 15 of progressing any further. Lyn Bolton 21 made sure the sponsor Debbie Leece 18 wasn’t taking home any winnings. Jayne Smith 21 and Maria Dimsdale 16 had a close battle, and the final quarter winner Philippa Taylor 21 ended Michele Cubbon 12 good run.

The two finalists were on top form at the semi-final stage with Philippa winning 21-14 against Jayne and Rose 21-10 against Lyn.

The Final started with some top bowling from both players, after five ends Rose was leading 10-7. Philippa picked up a two and changed the length of play to win herself a few two’s and take the lead. After 14 ends the game was at 16-15 where Philippa found her mark and didn’t look back. Taking the win 21-15.

The presentation was made by Lisa Pugh and Debbie Leece our sponsor Debbie Does Nails, who thanked everyone who supported and helped on the day.

McCarthy & Smith Triumph at Finch Hill

On Sunday 4th August Finch Hill hosted the Apollo Blinds mixed doubles competition.

The event got underway with some very strong starts, notably from the Marown pairings of Clare Cooper with Sid Bolton along with Debbie Leece with Paul Kelly.

At the quarter final stage home greeners Lil Smith and Les Brookes had a titanic game to eventually overcome South Ramsey’s Kim Hargraves and Austin Hart to progress into the semi-finals. Also winning through to the semi-finals were two Noble’s pairs – Tina and Steve Hampson together with Roz Cannon and Juan Drinkwater.

In the semi-finals Lil and Les continued their winning streak by beating Tina and Steve and progressed into the final. Jayne and Walter also won through against Roz and Juan.

Jayne and Walter began the final with a flying start taking a maximum four chalks but Lil and Les unfazed immediately took the next end and opened their account with several single shot wins. The weather was by now deteriorating rapidly but this didn’t dampen the determination of either pair. It was nip and tuck all the way until the final end when Jayne and Walter ran out the eventual winners. Well done Jayne and Walter!

A special mention must go to the two juniors in the completion, Arran Dunn (Marown) and Grayse Blencoe (Mooragh Park), who played an exceptional first round match against Roz and Juan and only just lost out with a final score of 19-21. They are certainly future stars in the making.

The presentation was made by Mr Chris Reynolds of Apollo Blinds who kindly sponsored this event.

Nobles Pair win Castletown Pairs Competition

16 pairs entered the Ladies June Doubles at an immaculate Castletown green at the weekend with the format of the competition being that each game was played over 10 ends with ends five and 10 being power ends where chalks counted double.

Losing in the semi finals were South Ramsey’s Fiona Kennish with Jenny Moore and also Jo Corkill (Peel Sunset) and Charlotte Clarke (Marown).

The final was played between Sue Gawne with Paula Firth (Nobles) against Ballaugh’s Michele Cubbon and Rose Waterworth and after a well-contested game it was the Douglas-based pairing who triumphed 16-7.

At the end the prizes were awarded by the organiser Kath Kinley and in front of the many spectators who stayed to the end the finalists said how well they’d enjoyed the weather and equally the format of the competition.
