Kerruish Springs ‘Surprise’

Photo: Arnie WithersMarown Bowling Club hosted the Henry Kissack Memorial Trophy on Saturday attracting an entry of 42.
The eventual winner in a keenly contested final was Onchan’s Phil Kerruish who beat home greener Colin Kelly 21-17. Kelly would have been hot favourite on his own green, however Kerruish used all his experience to keep Kelly at bay by ‘splitting’ the green to keep Kelly out of the corners early in the game. Neither player was able to build a big lead on the other, however it was Kerruish who got ahead at 18-15 before gifting Kelly a two, only to hit back with a good two to lead 20-17. On the last end Kerruish played a good second bowl to count one, which Kelly couldn’t beat allowing Kerruish to pull off a great win.
Losing out to Kerruish in the semi-final was Edward Carlyle (South Ramsey) who was just edged out 19-21, with Carlyle having performed well to dispose of club mate David Bradford in the quarter finals. Colin Kelly’s semi-final was more comfortable winning 21-10 against Peel’s David Proctor, who put out home greener Neil Withers in the previous round 21-20. Withers fought back from 14-20 to level the scores at 20-20 and put up a good lead. Proctor held onto his nerve to play a good first bowl, which Withers was unable to beat for Proctor to book his place in the semi-finals.
The presentation was made by Neil Withers who thanked all the Marown members for assisting throughout the day & the ladies for providing the refreshments. When accepting the trophy Phil Kerruish expressed there was nobody more surprised than himself at winning the trophy!
Marown A Extend Lead
Newly Promoted Noble’s A who Faced Onchan A
Photo: Phil CainIn Ellan Vannin Fuels division one newly promoted Noble’s A made the short trip to take on Onchan A at the Park on Monday evening coming away with an 2-8 loss, with the visitors missing out on an extra point with Steve Cook just losing 20-21 to Frank Watson. The two winners for Noble’s were David Pease who beat Kevin Quirk 21-16, whilst Tommy Collister won 21-18. The home team had three single figures winners from Peter Slinger, Matthew Quirk & Jordan Cain.
Marown A faced their B Team in a game which cost them vital points in both fixtures last season. The A Team made no mistake this time winning 9-1, which allowed them to extend their lead over second placed Onchan A. The lone winner for the B Team was Captain Harry Barton who recorded a comfortable 21-14 win over Paul Kelly. Darren Kerruish came closest to grabbing another point before losing out 19-21 to A Team Captain Paul Dunn, with Arnie Withers losing 17-21 to Phil Kelly. For the A Team Colin Kelly showed no mercy winning 21-3 against Brian Kelly.
Peel A would have been pleased to come away from ‘The Villa’ with a 3-7 away win against Douglas A. The notable absentee for Peel was Andy Kennish, who missed out on a return to his former club. Winning for Peel were Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly, Tom Kelly, Gary Smith & Jerome Surridge, whilst Tommy McMeiken made it five wins from five games. For Douglas Stuart Garrett, Mervin Sayle & Keith Rise were the three winners.
North Ramsey A hosted Castletown A at Mooragh Park, with the home team taking the win 8-2. Home Captain Allan Callow recorded a 21-6 win over Sam Clague. For Castletown Ian Watson & Peter Oates were the two winners.
Castletown B recorded a good 7-3 over visitors South Ramsey B, to lift themselves into seventh place, four points clear of their opposition on the night and five points clear of their higher ranked A Team. Bob Clark’s return to Castletown is helping their cause with a 100% winning record, with team mate Aaron Richardson having won four of his first five games. Nathan Cooil just managed to get home 21-20 against Christian Caley, whilst Mark Saunders & Ron Williams also won. The three winners for the visitors were Tony Dugdale, Sid Bolton & 16 year old Austin Hart, with Hart looking more comfortable in his second season of first division bowls.
South Ramsey A hosted Port St Mary A with the current champions performing much better than the Rayner Shield fixture played three weeks ago to record a 9-1 win. Dan McCabe performed well winning 21-9 win over James Teare, who suffered his first league loss of the season. For the home team Stefan Kelly performed well in the corners to beat Dave McCabe 21-2, whilst Peter Collister won 21-8 against Tim Williams who may well have had other things on his mind with the imminent arrival of his daughter. Chas Grills recovered from 17-20 down to inflict a third straight league loss on 2018 merit winner Trevor Quayle, who has now lost as many games this season as he did over the previous two seasons.
In division two Ballaugh A continue to set the pace following their 10-0 away win over newly promoted Marown C, with Finch Hill A just one point behind having won 9-1 at home to North Ramsey B who had Barry Teare to thank for saving the whitewash with his 21-11 win over Bill Cairns.
Port St Mary B got back to winning ways following their heavy defeat in the last round of fixtures with a 7-3 home win over Douglas B. Things aren’t looking too good for an immediate return to division one for Port Erin A who suffered a 0-10 whitewash at the hands of Peel B in the sunset city, whilst the following evening Peel C hosted Port St Mary C to record a good 9-1 home win over Port St Mary C with Ken Karran the only winner for the visitors. Onchan B sit in third place following their 2-8 away win over Ballaugh B, who are currently bottom of the table.
In division three, South Ramsey C still have an eight point lead at the top despite dropping four games away from home in the tightest match of the week across all three leagues winning 4-6 on games and taking the aggregate by just four chalks (145-149). The visitors just missing out on an extra two points on the night with two 20-21 losses for Lee Dawson & David Corkill against Ed Benson & Ken Horsley respectively.
Ballaugh C sit in second place following their 8-2 home win over Noble’s C, with Nobles B slipping up having lost 4-6 at home to Onchan C. Castletown C won 8-2 at home to Peel D, with four of the home team winning to single figures, with Brian Lindsay returning the compliment for the visitors. South Ramsey D returned to winning ways with a 7-3 home win over Douglas C.
Title Race Takes Shape
Ladies night league bowls took another twist following South Ramsey’s first defeat of the season losing by 11 chalks away to Marown.
The home side won five of the nine games as Ceila Joughin beat Kim Hargraves 21-18, Margaret Scarffe beat Gill Morgan 21-12, Joyce Ogden and Lil Smith both won 21-7 against Sue Collier and Ann Gale respectively. Marown’s final win came from Philippa Taylor who ended Jenny Moores 100 percent start to the season with a 21-19 victory. South Ramsey’s score was boosted with Fiona Kennish beating Mary Alderson 21-4 with wins also coming from Lyn Bolton 21-11 against Helen Withers, Moira Anderson 21-18 against Shirley Whelan. Elaine Moore maintained her 100 percent record pipping Rosie Winckle 21-20. Final score 158-147 (5-4).
Champions Port St Mary performed well to beat Peel Sunset by 60 chalks 168-108 (6-3). Single figure wins from Mavis Franks, Kellie Maddrell-Reeve, Trish Bull and Chris Price put Port St Mary in control. Ann Maddrell and Jayne Kneen added Port’s other two wins, with Jayne maintaining her 100 percent league record.
Mooragh Park picked up their first win of the season with a 31 chalk victory against Port Erin. Janet Monk and Caroline Parker won for the home side who also won three games to single figures coming from the experienced Helen Martin 21-2 and two great wins from young bowlers Shannon McMullan and Aalish Haworth who both won 21-4. Carol Kaye, Lynda Cadamy, Jacqui Elliott and Jean Thackrah won for Port Erin with Jean winning 21-5. Final score 159-128 (5-4).
In the remaining games on Friday night Nobles defeated Castletown B 184-103 (8-1), Castletown A dropped just 11 chalks in their 178-84 (8-1) victory over Port St Mary B and Onchan beat Douglas 180-94 (8-1).
After five games the league is now starting to take shape with Nobles, Castletown A and South Ramsey holding the top three positions. Defending champions, Port St Mary A, sit sixth but have played a game less than their rivals.
Nobles Duo Retain Title
Nobles held their ladies doubles competition on Sunday with a field of 13 pairs competing. The games were played on Nobles Number 2 which was in good condition.
The final was contested between the home duo of Clare Cooper/Rebecca Teare and Alison Keggen/Paula Garrett. The winners were Clare and Rebecca who won 21-14 taking the title for the second year running.
In the semi-final stage Clare and Rebecca came through a close battle with Elaine Moore and Kim Hargraves winning 21-20 whilst Alison and Paula defeated Paula Firth and Lin Ruscoe 21-16.
Treasurer for Nobles Bowling Club, Wendy Leece presented the prize money and trophy to the winners and thanked everyone for their help during the competition.
Six Wins North And South
Perfect weather, with warm sunshine and a gentle breeze, contributed to some lovely friendly games at the start of the week.
In the south Port St Mary A were the hosts for a visit from Mooragh Park B The home team were in top form and with the sun on their backs and a fast running green they won all six games meanwhile in the north, South Ramsey romped home with 6 wins against Port St Mary B.
Marown also had a good win when they visited the Villa playing Douglas B and winning 5 games 75-123 (1-5)
Ballaugh were at home to Nobles but unfortunately were a player short, however on a tricky green Brenda Bowyer and Carol Holt won 2 games for the home side and finished with 86 chalks for Ballaugh against 115 for Nobles (2-4)
Mooragh Park A had a close match against visiting side Douglas A. 2 close games and 3 good wins gave the home side the edge with a final score of 101-84 (3-3).
In the other matches Port Erin A played Castletown but lost 88-108 (2-4) and Onchan A played Port Erin B and won 104-66 (4-2).
On Thursday a very close match took place between Marown at home to Onchan A. Philippa Taylor, Shirley Wheelan, and Margaret Scarffe all had good wins but the visitors also had 3 wins by Maureen Payne, Lynda Clarke and Marilyn Ellison, however the scales were tipped in favour of the home side who won by 6 chalks 99-93(3-3)
Following the shock defeat of Castletown at Ballaugh in the Night league last week it was a convincing win for Castletown’s over 60’s this week when Ballaugh paid them a visit. Unfortunately Ballaugh were a player short and Castletown, who are currently second in the league, gave a very strong performance and won 126-51 (6-0).
Nobles and Douglas A had a local derby with Sue Caley, Brenda Williams, Wendy Cowin and Moire Turner all winning their games for Douglas A but Viv Cook and Paula Firth won their games for Nobles with Lin Ruscoe and Sylvia Kennaugh playing to 19 and just losing out. Finally Douglas A came away with the win 97-116 (2-4).
In the remaining matches home teams battled against tough opposition with the “home team advantage “ being of little use against strong and very often more experienced opponents.
Mooragh Park B lost against South Ramsey 46-119(1-5). Port St Mary B lost against Port Erin A 87-111 (2-4). Douglas B lost against Mooragh Park A 63-125 (1-5) and Port Erin B lost to Peel Sunset 88-102 (2-4).
