Two maximums for leaders

The Pronto Plumbing sponsored Outdoor Winter League, had another full week of fixtures, starting on Wednesday with the Round Robin. 28 members took to the green and were split into two groups playing doubles.  In the first group Gillian Jopson and Bryan Corner took the win by ten points beating Lil Smith and Mark Kelly to thirty four. The second group saw a tighter scoreline with Joy Stephens and Tricia Bull taking victory from Billy Blair and Reg Temporaza by three points.

Saturday, 15 January saw three teams take to the green on what was a sunny day. Bits n Bobs, WALOB and Seven Up battled it out.

The first game was Bobs taking on WALOB, with WALOB having the jack. The games were closer than expected by Bobs captain, and some great games were played. Bobs won two games and were really close in another three games, but WALOB were the aggregate victors by three points. Bobs winners were Pauline Cowley and Andy Morgan, whilst the WALOB winners were the doubles Sid Bolton and Toby Hart, Kim Hargraves, Lyn Bolton and Steve Waters. 

The second game on the green was WALOB against Seven Up, with Seven up having the jack. WALOB won four of the games. The closest scoring games being two won by Seven Up, Kevin Quirk held Tony Hart to 19 points and Andy Kennish kept Kim Hargraves also to 19.

The last game of the day was Seven Up against Bobs, and unfortunately Bobs were only successful in one game. That was the doubles Geoff Collier and Gill Morgan held Paula Firth and Mark Kelly to 11 points.

Sunday, 16th January had four teams take to the green, Castletown Cannons, Nobles Nutters, Louie’s Angels and Castletown Corkers.

Cannons took on the Nutters who had the jack first. The Cannons won four of the games with the closest win being by Sue Peach who kept Juan Qualtrough to 19. 

The Angels took on the Corkers and had victory in all games scoring the maximum 126.

Nutters next took on the Angels and also suffered at the hands of the league leaders who again took victory in all six games.

In a southern affair, Corkers took on Cannons, with the doubles for the Corkers taking their only game won in the match. Melody Marsh and Dave Faragher held Sue Peach and Pauline Moore to 18. The other close scoring game was won by Barbara Young who kept Sarah Morgan to 18. The Cannons only dropped three points in the whole match.

Could I please advise members that there are no league fixtures this coming Saturday, 22 January, so  a Round Robin will be held, starting at 1 pm as usual.

Third time lucky

The final session of 2021 was a Round Robin on the Wednesday December 29, where 11 hardy, determined players took to the green. The decision was to play two groups of singles. The winner of the yellow jack singles being Sue Gawne who scored 27 points and Margie Tasker second with 24. The winner of the black jack group was Tricia Bull scoring 21 and a close second place was Pat Rigby scoring 19.

It was third time lucky for the first games of the New Year, as they were abandoned in October and rained off in December, but they managed to play on Sunday, January 2 2022!

Four teams took the green – Mooragh Lakers, Nobles Nutters, Parkers and Castletown Corkers.

The Lakers took four of the wins leaving the Nutters to win two. The closest scoring game for the Lakers was won by the doubles Tracey Moore and Sue Gawne who held Tina Hampson and Juan Qualtrough to 18, whereas Dave Naughton for the Nutters held Shannon McMullan likewise to 18.

Parkers had victory in five games, whilst Dave Faragher took the only win for Corkers holding Mike Thomas to 17. There were a few close scoring games with Parkers taking the win. The doubles Mike Alexander and Jo Smith holding Judith Moore and Ivor Moore to 19 and Paul Clinton keeping Grace Gawne to 18.

The Nutters then took on Parkers, and again won two of the six games. The wins for the Nutters being the doubles Juan Qualtrough and Tina Hampson, who kept Paul Clinton and Paul Callister to 19, and Sylvia Kennaugh who held Mike Thomas to 17. The closest scoring game for the Parkers was for Neil Dunwell who kept Terry Bates to 17.

The final games saw the Lakers take the match by winning all six games against the Corkers. Three of the Corkers games managed to score double figures, the closest being that by Dave Faragher who scored 16 against Walter McCarthy.

Full programme to start new year

Well the outdoor winter league crown green bowls had a full week of games, whether that be round robin or league fixtures, long may it continue.

There were 23 members who played in the round robin on Wednesday, January 5. A group of doubles and a group of triples took to the green. The doubles were won by a significant ten points by Doug Allan and Brian Colquitt who scored 36 points, trailing in second was Sue Kerruish and Lil Smith. The triples had a closer set of games and the winners by one point were Derek Allen, David Clucas and Kevin Firth, leaving in a very close second on 30 points were Paul Callister, Bryan Corner and Brian Aspen.

There were four teams that took to the green on Saturday, January 8. Castletown Corkers, Bits n Bobs, WALOB and Nobles Nutters.

The Corkers took on Bits n Bobs in the first game and although it was three games to each team the winning team on points was Bits n Bobs. Bobs only lost six points during the whole match. As this shows Bobs had some high scoring losing games, but all played in great spirits.

The Nutters took to the green playing WALOB, and they took two games from WALOB. Two of the closest scoring games were a win for each team, for the Nutters Sylvia Kennaugh took the game from Tony Hart by one point, whilst for WALOB Kim Hargraves kept Steve Hampson to 19.

Bobs took on the Nutters for the second match, and this time Bobs were not so lucky, only winning two of the six games. There were two particularly close games again a win for Sylvia Kennaugh of the Nutters keeping Pauline Cowley to 19, and likewise Gill Morgan for Bobs keeping Dave Naughton to 19. Another game that needs to be mentioned is the doubles which was won by two great woods by young Alex Hampson who was in partnership with his dad Steve. They left Bobs players Andy Morgan and Billy Blair on 18.

WALOB then took on the Corkers and success in every game was to WALOB although it was touch and go with two games, when both Lilly and Grace Gawne of the Corkers scored 20 points in their games against Tony Hart and Lyn Bolton respectively.

Four teams also took to the green on Sunday, January 9, Mooragh Lakers, All But, Parkers and Outsiders.

The Lakers took on All But and won four of the games, the two winning games for All But were close scoring; the doubles Brian Colquitt and Celia Joughin took victory by two points from Victoria Johnson and Janet Monk, the second win was Bryan Corner who held Alison Kearsley to 20. 

Parkers took on Outsiders and it was three games to each team, but Outsiders took the win by three points. Elaine Moore and Kevin Firth had the closest win for Outsiders keeping Peter Karran and Mike Thomas to 19, while the closest win for the Parkers was by Neil Dunwell who held Jenny Moore to 19.

Outsiders then took on Lakers and it was an even number of games won by each team, the doubles again for Outsiders took victory this time by one point, with Elaine Moore and Steve Cook keeping Brian Kelly and Victoria Johnson to 20. 

All But then took on Parkers and managed to win two games, although none were particularly close scoring.

Pre-Christmas catch-up

Hello all, I hope you have had a great Christmas.

I am playing catch up with the reports, and I apologise for any delay.

On Sunday, December 12 a Round Robin was held as the green had no scheduled league fixtures. Six members attended and played singles, Steve Parker took first place with 25, Andy Kennish second with 23 and Jo Smith third with 22 points.

On Wednesday, December 15 again a Round Robin was held, and twenty members took to the green, each were drawn into doubles, playing in two groups, one with yellow jacks and the other with black jacks.

The winners of the black jacks Philippa Taylor and Sid McKnight took victory by 13 points, scoring 44 in total, leaving Alan Phair and Alec Taylor in second place on 31 points.

The winners of the yellow jacks did not have as big a point difference as they only won by one point, but it was a win all the same. Steve Parker and Gillian Jopson scored 33 points, leaving Paul Callister and Margie Tasker on 32.

The J&M Lee competition was held on Saturday, December 18 with a total of 22 members attending. All members were drawn into pairs and played a Round Robin format.

The black jacks group saw James Teare and Paul Callister take the win by four points, scoring 29 from Derek Allen and Jenny Moore who scored 25. The yellow jacks group saw the victory going to Tricia Bull and Andy Kennish who scored 36 leaving second place on 31 to Alec Taylor and Sue Gawne.

The final were the winners of each group playing five ends. The first two ends saw Tricia and Andy in the lead 3-0, but James and Paul came fighting back and went on to score eight points in the final three ends meaning they became the outright winners with the final score of 8-3.

The total amount raised on the day was £135.50 which will go to Peel RNLI.

Action falls foul of weather

Well this week’s winter bowls league games fell foul of the winter weather; also the usual Wednesday afternoon Round Robin was cancelled due to the seasonal wind and rain. 

Saturday’s league game fixtures, which were originally scheduled for October, were postponed again, however they have already been rearranged by the captains to be played on Sunday 2nd of January 2022. That will be the first games of the new year. 

Sunday’s Round Robin unfortunately didn’t have enough entries to take place. 

Don’t forget this weekend December 18th is the J&M Lee memorial drawn doubles competition. If you have missed the closing date for entries, please offer your support to the participants.

Angels march on

Well this was another week of Winter League Bowls disrupted due to the lovely weather.

The usual Round Robin on Wednesday was cancelled, and likewise the games scheduled for Saturday the 4th of December, these games will be rearranged for a date in the new year. Luckily a break in the weather meant the games could and did go ahead on Sunday.

Four teams took to the green on Sunday, Castletown Cannons, Outsiders, All But and Louie’s Angels.

All But took on Cannons and came away winning the game, All But took five out of the six games. The highest scoring game was won by Eddie Carlyle who held Joy Stephens to eighteen. George Peach the only winner for Cannons kept Celia Joughin to 16 points.

Outsiders took on Angels and took two out of the four games. The winners being the doubles Elaine Moore and Tony Dugdale who held Margie Tasker and Tricia Bull to 12 points. Whilst Fiona Kennish took the win from Matthew Keggan by a single point. There were a few close scoring games Trevor Quayle keeping Kevin Firth to 19 points and Rebecca Teare holding Jenny Moore to eighteen.

The Angels played All But winning five out of the six games played. Eddie Carlyle again being a winner for All But who held Margie Tasker to 20 points. The closest scoring game for the Angels was won by Trevor Quayle who kept Willie Corkill to 18.

The final match was Cannons against Outsiders. George Peach was again the only winner for the Cannons this time playing Tony Dugdale who scored 12 points.

Also another reminder that the J&M Lee charity doubles will be held on the weekend of the 18th and 19th of December. Entries for this doubles competition will close on Wednesday 15th of December.

Seven Up find some form

Well we are at week eight of the Outdoor Winter League fixtures which is sponsored by Pronto Plumbing; it all started on Wednesday the 24th of November with the afternoon Round Robin. This week saw 16 participants, who all played in doubles as one group.

The victors were Trish Bull and Sue McCourt who beat four other couples by four points. The four pairs that were held to 30 points were Derek Allen/Sylvia Kennaugh, Steve Parker/Pat Rigby, Sue Kerruish/Margie Tasker and Billy Blair/Alan Phair.

Unfortunately Saturday’s Round Robin did not go ahead due to the weather conditions.

Sunday the 28th of November saw three teams take to the green, Seven Up, Castletown Corkers and Nobles Nutters. Seven Up took five wins in their first match against Castletown Corkers, and the game that the Corkers won was by Grace Gawne who held Dougie Allan to 18.

Nobles Nutters also took five wins from the Corkers, but none of the games were really close scoring although the Corkers did get double points in all but one game. Another Gawne this time Lily took victory for the Corkers who held Mark Bradshaw to twelve.

The Nutters then took on Seven Up and unfortunately did not manage a win, Seven Up scoring the maximum 126 chalks available and securing maximum points. The closest scoring game was that won by Kevin Quirk, who didn’t let Juan Qualtrough score more than 18.

Outsiders hold onto second

Wednesday saw 31 members take to the green for the Round Robin, meaning a split into two groups. The doubles playing with black jacks and triples playing with yellow jacks. 10 members made up the doubles and the winning pair were Derek Allen and Terry Bates who scored 38 points, whilst the runners up Lil Smith and Margie Tasker scored 32. 21 members played in the triples and Willie Corkhill, Julian Rothera and Sue Kerruish scored 41 points leaving the runners up Steve Parker, Bryan Corner and Tricia Bull in second on 32.

I have been asked why I am not reporting the scores using the new system voted in at the AGM, so from now on I will report the results with the added 2 games to the winner.

Three teams were playing on Saturday the 20th, Outsiders, All But and Seven Up.

Outsiders who are currently second in the league took on All But who are third in the league for the first game and Outsiders took four wins, with All But securing two. Brian Colquitt was one of All Buts winners who kept Frank Watson to 19.

All But then took on Seven Up who are currently fourth in the league and unfortunately did not manage a win, but the closest game again involving Brian Colquitt, but this time he was kept to 18 by Andy Kennish. 

Seven Up next took on Outsiders and won two out of the six games, the closest being that of the doubles which was Paula Firth and Dougie Allan of Seven Up keeping Kevin Firth and Tony Dugdale to 18.

Sunday the 21st saw fifth place WALOB take on current leaders Louie’s Angels, and win two games out of the six. The doubles Joyce Ogden and Sid Bolton took victory from Tricia Bull and Caroline Whitehead by one point, whilst Lyn Bolton held Rebecca Teare to 18.

Seventh place Bits n Bobs took on ninth place Castletown Cannons and a good battle commenced, each side winning three games, but Bits n Bobs took the match by one point. Franz ten Donkelaar held Sue Kerruish to 18, Sue Collier kept Peter Curtis to 19, but likewise the Cannons took two wins by close margins. Joy Stephens holding Sue McCourt to 18 and George Peach keeping Gill Morgan to 19.

Louie’s Angels then took on Bits n Bobs, and did not get a clean sweep; Bits n Bobs took two games from them the closest score being Sue McCourt keeping Tricia Bull to 18.

Cannons then took on WALOB and won two games, it was a real family affair. The best scoring games were when Sue Peach kept Toby Hart to 18, but Tony Hart held George Peach to 17.

Angels continue good form

This week’s Pronto Plumbing sponsored winter league bowls got underway on Wednesday with the Round Robin attracting 32 members. The groups were split into triples and doubles, the black jacks group were doubles and the yellow triples.  The winners by nine points in the doubles were Derek Allen and David Clucas with 42, leaving Steve Parker and Brian Colquitt in second place on 33.  

The second group playing with yellow jacks was won with a 12 points margin by Alan Phair, Jane Lothian and Dougie Allan scoring 42, with Sid McKnight, Lil Smith and Terry Bates coming second with 30 points.

On Sunday the 14th of November, Mooragh Lakers took on Castletown Cannons and secured wins in all six games played. The games that were most closely fought were by Alan Phair who scored 18 against Brian Kelly and Barbara Young who also scored 18 against Janet Monk. Cannons second match was against Parkers and again the Cannons had all six games taken from them.

Louie’s Angels took on Parkers for their first match and won four out of the six games. The closest win for Angels was by Rebecca Teare who held Mike Alexander to 20, and the highest scoring game with a win for the Parkers was Neil Dunwell who kept Tricia Bull to 18.

The final match of the day was Lakers against Angels. The Angel’s managed to win five games but only dropped a point from the maximum 126 available. The closest scoring games were won by the Lakers doubles Alison Kearsley and Sue Gawne who took the win by one point from Tricia Bull and Caroline Whitehead. Margie Tasker for Angels beat Walter McCarthy to nineteen.

Angels whitewash title contenders Seven Up

After the games having to be abandoned last Sunday, this week the winter league bowls got underway on Wednesday with the round robin attracting twenty-seven members. The groups were split into triples and the winners by one point in the black jacks group were Sid McKnight, Pauline Cowley and Paul Callister. The second group playing with yellow jacks was won by eight points by Margie Tasker, Bran Aspden and Derek Allen.

Saturday’s matches saw three teams battle it out. Seven Up took on Castletown Cannons and won five out of the six games played. The win by Cannons was by Alan Phair who beat Dougie Allan to eighteen. Cannons then took on Louie’s Angels and again won one game, this time it was Joy Stephens who held Caroline Whitehead to nineteen points, whilst the other close win was Margie Tasker for Angels keeping Barbara Young to eighteen. Then the final match of the day was Louie’s Angels taking on Seven Up. The Angel’s won all six games to achieve the maximum score of 126. The closest scoring games were won by Margie Tasker and Rebecca Teare, beating Mark Kelly to nineteen and Andy Kennish to eighteen respectively.

Sunday saw Nobles Nutters taking on All But, and the Nutters taking two games with the closest being won by young Alex Hampson as he beat Lil Smith to eighteen. Castletown Corkers were playing Outsiders and had one win, David Faragher managed to hold Elaine Moore to twenty points. All But then took on Corkers and won five out of the six games, again a battle was fought between Willie Corkill and Sarah Morgan, with victory by three points going to Willie. Outsiders took five wins when playing the Nutters, with the doubles having the closest scoring game Elaine Moore and Frank Watson held Juan Qualtrough and Tina Hampson to nineteen.

There are no fixtures on Saturday, 13th November, so there will be a round robin being held. Also, I need to mention that from now on all entries for the round robin sessions will close at 12.50.

Entries are now being taken at Nobles 3 green for the J&M Lee charity doubles, which will now take place one weekend later than originally planned, with the new dates being December 18 and 19.
